I think most men, given the choice, prefer a somewhat more formal name - such as Charles. He would still be known among intimates as Chas or Chaz, so there would be no problem with that part of the transition.

I imagine that Chaz is a nickname (a shortened version of Chastity) that he is already used to being called. Why would you expect something more conventional like Charles?
