Boredom comes often right before sunset and even college students can’t avoid the torment. They search for miniscule things to save their brains from the nagging of the sheer lack of chaos. They live and breathe chaos. The drinking, the partying, and the endless and meaningless sex plague their lives with the disorder they pine for. This night was the exception as the chaos ceased and all was still.

The sun crept slowly into his hiding place as the silence fell over the small campus. Everyone was tucked away so safely in their small, meagerly decorated dorm rooms. So naïve as to what this night had in store.

Katie Nesbitt trekked her way across campus, making her way from seemingly endless Calculus class. The campus seemed deserted as she made her way down the sidewalk, which was usually scattered with the occasional student. Tonight was different and made Katie abnormally shaken. A shiver crept down her spine as she finally rounded the corner to the entrance of her dorm. She moved quickly up the stone steps and reached the code door. Katie hated this door. She could never remember the code. She fumbled through her bag as she searched for the code. After reaching the bottom of her stuffed book bag, she discovered the code and began to enter it. She stopped suddenly as she felt a cold wind brush the back of her neck. She heard swift footsteps behind her. She turned quickly to face the sound, but there was nothing to confront. She knew she heard those steps. They were almost ghostly. She shook her head and finished the code, walking inside the dorm and pulling the door closed behind her.

She leaned against the back of the elevator as it rose to her floor. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she wasn’t alone outside the dorm. She rubbed her arms as she noticed the clearly visible goose bumps that were forming. She finally arrived at her floor and stepped out. She was surprised that no one was bustling through the hallways, but surprisingly, no one was loud. Someone is always loud! There is never silence on her floor. Something must be wrong. She pulled her keys out to unlock her door, but was startled when the door swung open and her roommate pulled her inside. Katie stumbled across the room and onto her bed. She looked at her roommate who was staring at her with a look of fear. Katie put her bag on the ground and said, “Are you going to tell me what the hell is going on and why this campus looks like a ghost town?”

Megan, her roommate, looked at her with a confused look on her face and said, “You don’t know? Katie! There’s been a murder! They found a girl behind Kerry Hall and they said that it looked like an animal had ripped her throat out. Oh, it sounded so horrible! Some people say it must have been a rabid dog or something. But there’s something else, Katie!” Katie tried to digest the information that was being fed to her. Katie snapped back to reality and asked, “What, Megan?” Megan took a deep breath and sat down beside Katie on the bed. “They say her blood was drained. All, but a little bit.” Katie asked, “She bled to death?” Megan shook her and swallowed hard then reported, “No, there was no blood. She didn’t bleed. Whatever did this must have drunk it all.”

Katie jumped up and faced Megan, asking, “Are you trying to convince me that there is a vampire on this campus? A vampire? Vampires are not real.”

Megan nodded her head and said, “It’s possible. They do have those vampire community websites on the Internet. They say that they are real.”

Katie laughed and said, “Those websites were made by a bunch of whacks who want attention and want to make themselves feel special. It’s a bunch of bullshit.”

Megan laughed and retorted, “Maybe, but you won’t say that when you’re the next victim.”

Katie just shook her head and took her bag over to her desk, sitting down in front of her computer. Megan walked over to Katie’s desk and leaned against it. “We’re not allowed out at night until they catch whatever got that girl.” Katie rolled her eyes as she typed on her computer and said sarcastically, “Right…the vampire….uh-huh.” Megan shook her head and said, “Well, I’m going to the lounge to watch the news with the other girls. Remember, vampires can only come in if you invite them.” She playfully poked the side of Katie’s neck with her two fingers, causing Katie to jump. Megan left the room, closing the door behind her.

Katie calmed her nerves and continued chatting with her friends on the Internet. Everyone wanted to talk about the “vampires.” Katie had to admit that it made her curious so she Googled “vampires” to see what she came up with. She read aloud as she looked over a website, “Vampire- a soul of a dead person superstitiously believed to come from the grave and wander about by night sucking the blood of persons, thus causing their death. Superstitiously. They’re not real. They’re just story to keep people from going out at night.” She exited the website she was reading and grabbed her bag. She emptied the books out of her bag and became frustrated when she couldn’t find the book she was searching for. She sat back in her chair and sighed, “Ugh….I must have left it at the library earlier today. Dammit!” She grabbed her bag and her jacket before leaving the room. She decided that she would run quickly so campus police who were no doubt patrolling the campus wouldn’t catch her out. She snuck past the lounge where all the girls were congregated around the large television and out the side door.

The streets through campus where darker than normal, almost eerie. She shook off the uneasy feeling that had came upon her and made her way quickly down the sidewalk to the library. Once again, the feeling that someone was watching fell upon her. She began to walk faster, repeatedly telling herself, “Snap out of it, Katie! They’re not real. Just get to the library.” Suddenly, the air seemed to cool around her as she noticed a figure ahead, walking towards her. She quickly veered off the sidewalk and cut through the grass, increasing her speed to a run. She could see the door to the library as she rounded the corner. She could hear steps behind her as she began the sprint towards the safety of the library doors. As she reached the library steps, it seemed as if she was swept up into a mighty gust of wind. Her long, brown hair was wildly blowing in all directions and as she began to focus her eyes on the almost blurred figure in front of her, everything went black.

Her head pounded as she tried to pull out of the darkness that was invading her mind and eyes. She saw the figure of a man in the distance of the darkness, coming closer. She couldn’t move, but in a sense, she didn’t want to move. Her body seemed to freeze, but not in terror. She couldn’t even begin to describe the feeling that was spreading through her body. The figure had moved the full distance between them and was now standing eye to eye with her.
The blackness kept getting darker and darker around them. She tried to focus the figure that just taken hold of her and seemed to be lifting her. The characteristics began to form on his face. A man! She managed to murmur, “You’re not a beast at all. You’re beautiful.” Just as the words escaped her lips, the figure diverted from his beautiful face as he opened his mouth to reveal monstrous fangs. Katie couldn’t scream as he sank his teeth into her neck. Colors swirled around her as she relaxed and let Death take her away. Suddenly as she was moving towards the light, she was pulled from the darkness.

((I need my vamp....his background is pretty open and he needs a reason for letting her live. PM me with a character profile if you're interested.))
