(CNN)Charlie Watts, the unassuming son of a truck driver who gained global fame as the drummer for the Rolling Stones, has died. He was 80.

''It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts. He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family," his spokesperson said Tuesday in an emailed statement to CNN.

"Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones one of the greatest drummers of his generation. We kindly request that the privacy of his family, band members and close friends is respected at this difficult time.''

The band had announced earlier this month that Watts would miss the band's upcoming North American leg of its "No Filter" tour after undergoing a medical procedure for an unknown condition.

sad. i have no problem with charlie watts. Fucking shame it wasnt jagger though. TWAT.

.
As a drummer myself I always appreciated his work. He was like the polar opposite of Keith Moon, but served his purpose in a similar way. He fit The Stones perfectly, just like Moon fit The Who.

He deserves the respect he earned.

RIP Charlie Watts

I'm really bummed out about Charlie.

Bad transcription. Charlie generally didn't play the hats when he played the snare.

I was reading something about that yesterday, how he’d come off the high hat a hair early to make room for his other hand to get to the snare.

Apparently his snare was also slightly behind his bass drum, and that slightly off kilter sound is what knowledgable people say made his playing unique, hard to copy and well-suited to playing behind Keith, who apparently tends to play a bit ahead of drummers anyway.

I used to front a rock band with an accomplished jazz drummer, but was never able to articulate what it was about his playing that seemed to lead by moving the time signature ever so slightly ahead or behind the beat for emphasis/character, but it’s interesting stuff.

connie preferred drummers.

i always thought that charlie did not play on the upbeat of the two and four on his high hats so that he could raise the left stick and crack the fuck out of his snare drum.

I made my tribute to the great Charlie Watts at another venue. May he rest in paradise.

Chuck was a steady hand on the tiller and that snap let them all know where they were at. In a band with those other miscreants that is exactly what you need. Order within the chaos.

He was still alive?

Go figure.

PS - Are you a Rory Alt? I could see that.

You're still alive?

Go figure.

PS - Got any thoughts on that earthquake that hit Haiti last week 4_est/AJ/Speare/Chumpikan? Pretty sure we know what they are, though.

the snare and the SM57 would not be ignored.

Exactly this^^^^

And it worked, while also giving the band a distinctive sound.

Very classy.
Very "upbeat."
A tribute thread is a great place to grind old axes...

I never quite heard the appeal of Stones music.

Growing up it was basically the Beatles and the Stones.
I preferred the latter because the former were just too...

Well, I'm not sure of the word, but the phrase "Boy Band" had yet to be coined.

The stones just seemed to better reflect the energy of the youth of the time;
not exactly a passive lot...

Dead musician tribute threads are amongst my faves, because it brings out the aresholes like kowboi and luk, who desperately want us to think they know something about music.

What made Charlie Watts interesting in my view was he always saw his stones job as a job, secondary to his family and interests. You dont see that very often, especially amongst celebrities.

Pookie’s been hating on Champ’s first nation status for about 15 years now, and to a handful if you, it’s still “funny”. Good people.

It's really flattering to find out that I am more important to
a lot of people here than poor dead Charlie of The Stones...
