Charlie Hebdo - discuss....

I changed my mind.
Nothing to see here.

From the article:

The cartoonist, Matt Wuerker, defended his cartoon, saying it skewered secessionists and those who disparage the federal government writ large while taking its services for granted.

The cartoon could have been poignant and effective, but IMO mixes symbols incoherently and falls wide of the mark.

Just to be clear, Matt Wueker is the cartoonist that did the deleted Politico piece.

Right. I felt Wuerker's cartoon had a poignant message. Good, if controversial, satire. But I cannot say the same for the Hebdo cover. I'm assuming there's a coherent message with Hebdo, but I don't know what that is (since natural disasters kill mostly indiscriminately, and not all Texans are neo-Nazis).

Politico deleted the tweet after many conservative pundits and writers at right-leaning websites criticized the cartoon, saying it was insensitive and shamed victims of the hurricane.

Wuerker defended his cartoon, saying it skewered secessionists and those who disparage the federal government writ large while taking its services for granted.

"As a political cartoonist, I try to get people to think — to consider the ironies and subtleties of the world we live in," Wuerker said in an email to Business Insider.

"This cartoon went with an extreme example of anti-government types — Texas secessionists — benefitting from the heroism of federal government rescuers," Wuerker continued. "It of course was not aimed at Texans in general, any more than a cartoon about extremists marching in Charlottesville could be construed as a poke at all Virginians. My heart is with all the victims of Hurricane Harvey's destruction and those risking their lives to save others."

To be honest, I think it's ironic that the group that most bitches about political correctness couldn't handle this very simple truth.

People in France take notice when the US harbors Nazis. It's kind of overwhelming and keeps them from seeing the good side of the US. Can't say I blame them at all.

there are quite a few neo nazis, aryan brotherhood and other racists in the area. some of them are in the drug trade. so is jasper, texas. bodies float.

the french don't have much standing room, seen as their citizens are forced by law into dress codes. they don't do full body religious wear very well. that's the price of freedom.

Much of Japanese cultural dynamics looks REAL WEIRD to outsiders but analysts say these adaptations allow too many people to live on too little land without all killing each other because people. Europeans find that certain cultural expressions and demagogic speech tend to promote violence and are best suppressed.

It's not the price of freedom. It's the price of survival. Play nice or die.

i understand that some europeans curtail certain rights of expression in order to reduce violence. the woman wearing the full burka, is now not allowed to leave the house at all. how is that survival?

Americans can't leave the house without covering their genitals. What kind of freedom is that?

there is no true freedom left in this world.
