If I wanted to post a pic in a thread instead of a link can you tell me what format is used here?

Pictures are attached by using the "attach file" section at the bottom of the "newreply" form.
It says, "Valid file extensions: gif jpg png txt zip bmp jpeg"
GIF and JPG formats show as images. BMPs sometimes show as a link and sometimes as an image. PNG is also a graphics format, but I haven't seen any used show I'm not sure how they are displayed.
