Have you ever written a story where one of the main characters becomes such a despicable ass that you hate writing about him/her?

I have a character like that in my main series.
But killing that character off would flat ruin the series.

Dratted chatacters and stories seem to take on a life of their own after a while.

I'm a freak of nature, I sort of like characters with whom I personally and vehemently despise. I rarely make them main characters, but they're fun to write anyway.

In one story as part of the plotline the main character becomes a total and unforgivable ass, but he's still fun to write in a way.

Perhaps it's because I know that the overall theme unlike life is that these people don't win. In all my stories the assholes and other winners lose no matter how long it takes for it to occur. Without that, I might feel akin to you.

What I'd reccomend is to have the end about a change of heart for the main character, some failure that forces him to abandon his assholic ways. But that's just one man's opinion.

I've never written anyone like that but I've read books with them. Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy, for example, I despised Prince Regal with a PASSION... But the book wouldn't have been the same without him.

I don't know if I could do that. Maybe I'm just an optimist at heart... I can find something good in the most repulsive characters I create, or I can't bother with them. I think it was Tennessee Williams who said that he couldn't write a character he wasn't sexually attracted to.

Tennessee Williams was a little twisted. That said (I live in New Orleans), he did have good taste in resturants.

Characters we hate are the heart and soul of comedy. Where would Red Dwarf be without Arnold Rimmer?

Yeah ... Chet, in "The Neglected Son." I started off feeling sorry for the little shit, and then he up and went psychotic on me! ;) It was still kind of fun, but in a dark and sick sort of way.

Well to be honest i can't think of a single one that i hate nor any that i don't particularly like....

I think i could have problems trying to write someone i don't like. there are not many of those kind of people in the world :)

No. The more despickable the more fun to write.

Yeah, I'm horrible.
