Changing Threads

I know nothing can be done about this but I had to rant about the issue anyway just to preserve my own sanity. I recently added a thread to a story, and in my oppinion the story was very unrealistic even for a stroke story, I thought in a haze of self importance and a sense of personal greatness (yes I'm as modest as they come :D ) that I'd add a thread to the story to try and bring a bit of realism into it, only to find that once it was added, two whole paragraphs went missing off the end, I contacted the editor to ask that he change it back to its original state but have recieved no reply.

I know this is the right of the editor but I would not have sent in my addition if I had of thought it would have only added to the unrealistic nature of the story instead of helping it. After all I have only ever used my editorial options to correct spelling mistakes and pov mistakes. Has this ever happened to anyone else or has anyone else ever butchered anothers thread to make it fit in with your own idea of how you want the story to go?

I know I am being a bit dramatic, its only a story and all that, but I am interested as too how often something like this happens to others.

Whilst I can understand why you would be aggro about that happening to you, you have to accept that when you submit to someone elses story, you put your addition at their whim ( however good or bad that may turn out! :p )

If you REALLY want your threads left as is, write mainly for your own stories, its what I do, though I sometimes add to others but not often.

There is a difference between changing a sentence and deleting entire paragraphs though. I might tweak a sentence that someone has submitted to me, but I if I had major issues with the content of several paragraphs I would reject it and detail my reasons.

I agree, drastically changing someones elses thread I isnt something I'd do ( except when I've felt generous and approved those 4 line thread after 'beefing' them up heavily )

But what I'm saying to sadman is that when you submit to someone elses story, your leaving your thread at their mercy, and they may be someone ( as seems here ) that IS inclined to totally redo threads, everyone I think looks at the title 'editor' differently.

I understand that it is my own fault for submitting to anothers story but I have never had this problem with another editor before, the simple fact is I won't be adding anymore threads to any of his stories even though he asked me to. Infact the only comment I had about the thread from the editor was 'Great tread simply amazing please addd more' not a single mention of why he felt the need to rip it apart. Anyway it is a learning experience I suppose.

Some changes I find OK, even if they involved serious rewriting. The ones I object to are changes that completely change the outcome of the thread. I had one of these in a story that then went 'Closed' (not you, Maester). Probably a good thing, since I won't be contributing to it any more. It's really a shame since it was one of my favorite stories, one I contributed heavily to.

As far as not writing for other people's stories at all, I've contributed to 77 different stories, at least 40 or 50 were other people's, and I've only had trouble with one story. So, don't stop contributing to stories that aren't yours. Just stop contributing to those that over-edit.

Thats exactly what happened, the whole outcome was changed, if it was just spelling or cosmetic changes then fine, I am happy for that to happen as I tend to make small changes in the threads submitted to my stories, usually just spelling, grammar, pov or tense. I won't be refusing to submit to all stories just his ones.

I would be interested to see the original thread as you wrote it. I would like to see what I would have thought of it had it been submitted on one of my stories. I normally do not change threads, and I value the different directions that people take stories. I will edit, sometimes heavily, if I like the idea but it is written very poorly, but I can't say I have taken out a large portion of a story like that.

In any event I would like to see what you wrote to see what I would have thought of it.
