Closed for ToniTaylor
Boring. The word thrummed in her brain; flashing neon behind her eyelids anytime she closed her eyes.
Boring.
Boring.
Boring.
It was a word no one wanted to be associated with, especially when the one to call you such a thing was your boyfriend.
With a world-weary sigh, Cassidy slumped in her seat. The lecture hall was empty except for her and the sign echoed around her; the weariness ringing in her ears. Class wasn’t due to start for another thirty minutes, but Cassidy always made a point of getting in early so she could claim the desk front row center.
Okay, so maybe she enjoyed having a routine. What was wrong with that? And why did it matter if she wasn’t big on changing that routine?
Cassidy pulled her hair up into a bun, her finger moving deftly as she smoothed back the thick brown strands. Pusher her glasses up her nose she sighed again.
Seth’s words had been flung in a fit of fury and had hit their target with deadly accuracy.
They’d been fighting. Again. The fights had grown so frequent that Cassidy could no longer tell when one ended and the next began. The one that morning, though, that one she would not forget.
“You never want to do anything! Seriously, Cass, all you do is study. And when you’re not studying you’re TALKING about studying. I mean c’mon, there’s more to life than school.”
Cassidy sat on the narrow twin bed in Seth’s dorm room, hair still mussed from sleep, and watched her boyfriend of five years pace the grungy floor.
They’d started dating in high school – she the shy and nerdy freshman, he the worldly sophomore. It had been a romance that no one saw coming and yet, somehow, it made sense. They’d been so in love, joined at the hip for most of high school. Seth had made Cassidy one of the “popular people”, a title which had slipped away when he’d left for college and left Cassidy to fend for herself for the first time. She had followed him to college, forgoing full rides to Stanford and Yale just to be with Seth again.
Everything had started out so great. They’d driven out to school together at the end of summer, helped each other move in and get settled into their respective dorms. Had christened Cassidy’s bed with a quick but passionate love making session. They were once again the freshman and sophomore, an odd ball pairing that somehow didn’t make as much sense in their new surroundings. Seth was always off with his buddies from the lacrosse team, getting drunk and going to parties, leaving Cassidy alone more days than she could count. When they were together things seemed…off. Seth was distant, distracted. Their sex life had become almost non-existent. They had never been one of those couples that was constantly on top of each other or into PDA, but now Seth would barely hold her hand when they went out. He no longer rested his hand on the curve of her back as they walked across campus.
“I’m on scholarship, Seth, I have to keep my grades up. You know that.” She said softly. Cassidy hated fighting with him. She’d never been one for confrontation, but it seemed that that was all they did these days.
“Fuck that.” Seth scoffed. “You get A’s without even trying. Truth is that you don’t know how to have fun. You didn’t in high school and you don’t now. You’re boring, Cassidy. Fucking boring.”
Boring.
The word burned inside her as she listened to the footsteps of her fellow classmates as they slowly trickled into the lecture hall. It wasn’t just the word that hurt, it was the images it conjured in her mind. What was Seth doing all those nights that he was off with his teammates? It was no secret that half the female student body wanted him. How many had actually had him? Cassidy didn’t want to think about Seth with another girl, but she couldn’t help it. Her imagination ran rampant with images of him kissing, touching…fucking other girls, and tears burned at the back of her eyes. She wiped them away quickly, before anyone could see, and sat up straighter in her seat.
If Seth thought she was boring well then, she was going to have to fix that. As the professor walked into the room, setting his briefcase down on the desk next to the lectern, an idea formed in Cassidy’s ever churning mind. She would prove to Seth that she wasn’t boring. She would show him that she wasn’t a boring stick in the mud.
She just wasn’t sure how.
