I'm having a bit of an issue with this sites policies regarding Anonymous. While writers, editors and those generally trying to offer help (granted sometimes it doesn't feel like it) are required to log in to leave a message on the forums, on the main site there is no requirement to log in to vote or to leave a scathing or even abusive message. It seems odd to me that the people most likely to denegrate someone's writings, comments or what have you, don't seem to have the courage to say who they are. Many comments from the Anon camp are fine, but perhaps an author should have three options in regards to comments and voting.

At this point in time the writer may Select to turn off each function:
Voting Status: Yes / No - allowing or disallowing voting;
Public Comment Board: Yes /No - allowing or disallowing comments.

I don't know if this is a generic setup or if those are the only options offered to Literotica from it's web host / board software, whatever...

Here's what literotica advises when you go in to 'moderate' your feedback.

"As the author of this submission, you are responsible for moderating the public comment board. That means you can delete any comment for any reason. ... It is possible that if you delete too many comments, you may discourage people from leaving more comments, but it is your right to moderate the comments on your work however you want."

While as a writer you are encouraged to accept all feedback and votes, why not give the writer the option of shutting off Anonymous responses. I like the venue, but I think that particular feature may be amended. A third option perhaps?

Voting for logged in users only: Yes/No
Public Comment Board for logged in users only: Yes/No

I know the nature of the site means many people will log in but not register. But lets not forget that most people are likely using pseudonyms (is that really you BarondeSade)? No one has ever thought of setting up an alt email address? If they're willing to comment they should be willing to say which user they are shouldn't they? Isn't BarondeSade essentially the same as saying Anonymous? (I didn't pick you because I thought it was you Baron).

My guess is that many of these Anonymous posts are from registered users who simply want to bash people. Maybe try and influence people to vote the story down, I don't know. But you know what Anonymous? I'd sure appreciate the opportunity to have a look at one of your stories.

Any thoughts people?

It wouldn't matter.

I have three pen names, all of which I can log into at any given moment. Anyone who wants to be a jackass and protect their "real" pseudonym could just create an alt and go forward with business as usual.

All it would really accomplish is turning off legitimate commenters who don't want to be bothered with the hassle.

Just like this.

This could just as easily be a throw-away name for no other purpose than to leave nasty comments and be a jackass.

By the way, you can disable anonymous comments and email feedback.

Go to your member page, select MAIN, and then OPTIONS. You'll find the setting there.

Post a link to your stuff and I'll be happy to leave a comment, and use my real name.

Why not just make peace with it and move on. There are some threads on the subject for venting and laughing.

Thanks Darkniciad I'll check that out. Just was feeling kind of frustrated about it is all.

Roden, trust me, you're too good a writer to be bothered by the trolls. The trolls ye have always with ye, as someone or other once remarked. If they could write a good hot story, they would, and not go bashing other writers. So they're just a battalion of frustrated little dipshits, each of them with an internet connection and barely enough brains to figure out how to use it.

Or, in the immortal words of Brendan Behan, "Fuck 'em all but one--and he can fuck himself!"

Thanks estragon

Yeah, I'm done worrying about it. After all the first comment 'crap' was hardly what I would call constructive criticism. Why take it seriously. Moving on....

Nonsense.

Everyone's a critic, even you. You whine like PILOT.

Truth is, you dont gotta be a cow to know a steak from hooves.

RODENT?

Grow up, crybaby.

It's sticks and stones. Who cares what a bunch of people you'll never meet say about your stuff?

You're writing for free here, which means you're writing for your own enjoyment. For as many bombs and dumb comments you get, yhou'll get as many or more good ones.

Funny how the trolls are always wrong, but no one complains about the "best writer ever" comments which are just as stupid.

Somewhere in between are some decent constructive comments and those are the ones to pay attention to.

Also understand that most of the time the damn troll didn;t read your story. They just go up and down the story lists being petty and mean. They're the kids that got wedgies and swirlies in school.

Fuck 'em

...

I like the nonsensical positive comments, mostly because they are positive, and everybody here is an attention whoere (DON'T TRY TO DENY IT!)

But also because it's usually followers who do it. If it's some random anonymous who says "gret story, lovit" Yeah, it doesn't mean much. But if it's somebody who has studiously commented or sent feedback on a lot of my stories, it means a lot more. If they are bothering to follow my stories, then I have to be better then most of the other authors on the site in their eyes. :)

Just because people don't complain about over-the-top praise doesn't mean they take it seriously :p

True, but I'm making the point that I've never seen a thread based on "Oh, they're praising me to much!"

You just take the good with the bad and somewhere in between there are some things you can learn from one way or the other.

I've said before and will say it again, the overly abuse comments to me are the best, because they're fucking hilarious.

See, point proven. The trolls ye have always with ye. Q. E. fuckin' D.

Have to admit

I was impressed by the monicker 'Rodent'. Haven't heard that since about grade two.
