Chandler Talked About Plot

I hate to confess this to you of all people, LC, but I've never made it to the end of an H.P. Lovecraft novel. Just not my thing. I don't think Marlowe was afraid of old age or seafood (!), and if I remember rightly Lovecraft's style has more kinship with, say, Poe than with Hemingway and Hammett, whom Chandler takes after.

I think you just have to pick up The Big Sleep to get Chandler. Can't get the essence of him from the movie. Fortunately, you can probably find a dog-eared copy for a buck or two in any used bookshop in Providence.

And once you've read the one, you've pretty much read them all. He did his one trick very well, but he was a one-trick pony.

My daughter and I have plans on Friday to go down to Cellar Stories, the best used bookstore I've ever seen.

They have an awesome occult section and being in Providence of course have some very cool HPL stuff

If you're ever in RI you have to go there if you're a book lover, the smell alone will hook you-any fan of old books knows what I mean.

Trouble Is My Business

TROUBLE IS MY BUSINESS by Raymond Chandler

Its a longish short story of 8 or 9 chapters, and fits snuggly within Chandler's private eye mystery formula. Old Man Jeter hires Philip Marlowe to get rid of a blonde gold digger hot to get a slice of his son's five million dollar inheritance from the deceased mother.

The killings start almost from the beginning. There are several, and others get gunshot wounds. It features the rich old daddy, a femme fatale, a butler, a chauffeur, a gangster, some LA detectives, and others who exist to make Marlowe's life hard. Marlowe gets into the blonde's supply of expensive scotch.

The writing isn't poetic, its lean and austere. It came along about 7 years after THE BIG SLEEP. It was part of a short story collection of similar Philip Marlowe tales.

So you find Chandler's writing erotic? This is an erotica writing site. You may not care about that, but those here to work on writing erotica might give it a thought.

well the forum slug is...

A place for writers and readers to socialize and discuss the craft of writing.

So its relevant even if its redundant.

Yah. No reason that writers shouldn't think about how relevant it is to the specific writing this Web site highlights, though.

As a rule I keep 2-3 posters on IGGY because I'm confident their stuff doesn't interest me. I cant recall ever reporting anyone for nuthin. Most posters repel me with their posts, many have me on IGGY, and I wish to Allah my threads discouraged a couple or three folks enough they'd roost at the erotic Depends board and avoid me. If they don't want my peaches, don't shake my tree.

True its predominantly erotica, but there is non erotic, some of the novels and novellas don't contain erotica and some of the non human and sci fi stuff barely touches it.

And as someone was saying in another thread there's a bunch of LW stories that are nothing but short tales of violence.

But in reference to the slug, there are threads placed here that could be moved, but the GB would be the only option and who deserves that?
