Found this round rock like object in the back 40. It is about the size of a softball, but weighs 30 pounds. At first i thought it was a cannonball, but chiseled off a small piece and it appears to be granite and metallic like . Any ideas. Pics below.

Hmmmm...I just saw this....the weight offhand makes me consider meteorite, but it appears to be avvilan deposits of sandstone.

Is the metallic dispersed? or consistent?

It could be a geode...what area of the USA are you in?..that would help me asertain what you have.

If you are willing to send me a piece, then I can tell you for sure,if you want to chance that it may be a geode,if you send it to me,I will slice it and see what we have,if that interest you...send me a PM.

Dispersed.

I will try to get in touch with the Geology Prof. at the University here, he should be able to tell me what it is. Thanks CH and I will let you know what he says too.

You just MAY have a geode considering the area you are in...Sandstone geodes have been found in that part of the USA.

You are welcome.

My first thought was somebody painted a mudball gold.

KB,
Is the picture showing the true color? Or is the yellow color consistent throughout?

Almost every Geode I've seen is a grey shell around a crystaline center. The fact that many geodes are hollow would make 30 lbs very much on the heavy side.

A typical granite boulder the size of a softball is only about 5-10 pounds -- 30 lbs means this is almost as dense as gold, it's definitely denser than a shotput of the same size (8 lbs) made of iron.

I suppose a meteorite is a possiblility. Even then, the density would seem to be a problem.

Keep us posted. This is an interesting puzzle.

Color in pic is bad WH, it is dark grey w/crystal like shiny spots and some reddish that look kind of like iron ore. Will get it checked out at the University and keep you informed.:)

The weight threw me too, I thought it was a lead cannon ball.

Hmmm reddish...that is a real good clue as to its makeup,Iron usually manifest itself in brown and red in most deposits that are earth based, meteorites as a rule dont have the sedimentary deposits so in that fashion they usually are a dark black/grey....it is concievable that it may have been a meteorite that fell in ancient times, and sedimentary deposits formed around it....this is a very interesting puzzle indeed.

Now if it isnt a meteorite,it could be a pegamite formation that has been pushed up to the surface, the dispersed metallic you see could be Mica or Phosphate or even asbestos.

Also the precursor of Allunimum Bauxtite is know for a reddish color in nature, but then again,we have the weight issue.

I would love to see the geological report after you talk to the Prof.

I took it the the University today, it appears to be a very old meteorite. They are taking it to Chicago and I'll let you know what they come up with.
