Loreena McKennitt.... although some would say she isn't....

A long while back, I was listening to teh "thistle and SHamrock" on PBS Radio and they featured what was called "afro-celtic". African drum rhythms with celtic pipes, flutes or strings.

Powerfully combined stuff.

The local public radio station airs a celtic music program that I catch every once in a while. They also have a way to order any music played on the station. You might check your local public radio station to see if they carry the program and/or have the buy what you hear program in place.

Mary Black, Loreena McKennitt, Clannad, Maire Brennan, The Chieftains

I think those are among the best known, otherwise, I too am interested in finding more first-rate/genuine Celtic music, vocal and instrumental. I do searches on Amazon but mostly it takes recommendations or a listen to cause me to put out for a CD by an unknown artist.

Thanks, Perdita

I think I'd like that!

The Chieftans. especially, their celtic harp donw with the Dublin harps.
Three pigs & a ham
Whiskey in the Jar

If you have a renisanse faire that comes your way stop in one day. A lot fo celtic groups play the faires and sell their Cd's after the show.

Men of Worth
Wicked Tinkers

for celtic flavored almost punk,

Flogging Molly

Come to Edinburgh during August, loads of Celtic music played in the streets as part of The Fringe. Sat down in the Royal Mile, just down from Edinburgh Castle, this year in the shadow of St Giles cathedral and listened to a bunch of nutters in full medieval highland costume play the pipes and drums. Tribal Vortex. Full of energy. Awesome. Makes you proud to be Scots.

Enter the tribal Vortex ef you dare
Spin with the clann withoot a care
Whirrlin birrlin up an doon
Faster faster roon an roon
Hoochin cheuchin whit a fare
Pound yer feet an scream for mair
When finally exhaustion heaps ye on the flair
Gang up an find the urge fare primal
Tak tha loup an keep it Tribal.

I love Celtic rock. There's a cd we play at my shop all the time but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the group now. They're actually a Canadian group. Some of the members used to be with a group called "The Tartan Terrors", also Canadian based. They absolutly rock!

I'll look up the name of the group tomarrow when I go to the shop.

Maggie Sansone

Sounds absolutly dreamy. *sigh*

Pardon if any of these are repeats:

Gaelic Storm
Altan
The Young Dubliners
Enya
MacKeel
Spirit of the West (some stuff, anyway)
The Boys of the Lough
The Tannahill Weavers
Irish Descendants
Ashley Macissac
Great Big Sea

Maire Brennan has a great voice, so does Loreena McKennitt. The Wicked Tinkers are FUN! (Thanks Bel, for the introduction!) Flogging Molly, a must ... their music will wake you up in the morning better than coffee! :D Clannad is good, though some of their stuff is starting to sound dated. Lifescapes has a Celtic flute cd out that's very nice. The Rough Guide guidebook series has a Rough Guide to Scottish Music that has a great variety of stuff from traditional to more modern.

*ahem* I'd better stop... Celtic music is just a wee favorite of mine. :)

Sweets, I'd melt in Texas. You'd have to keep a pool of ice cubes just to keep me solid. :D
Done.
Pool will arrive just after Christmas.
I'll begin making ice now.
You'll be here?
