When posting stories "starring" a celebrity, is there a generic disclaimer statement that you should/could put on it?

Since it will go in the celebrities category, no disclaimer is needed as there is already one posted for the entire category.

I haven't done celebrity stories (actually, I've only written a chapter of one story so far), but I can't picture myself needing such a disclaimer. If you're too crazy to realize that this is fantasy, you need a padded cell. Just my opinion.

FYI, I don't think that I could ever write fanfiction based on someone else's work. A fantasy about a real-life celeb, perhaps, but not someone else's copyrighted, original work. It's a form of plagiarism and theft of intellectual property. I mean no offense, but that is what I believe. Besides, if you're worth your salt as a writer, you should be able to create your world. It would be more fun, too, since you can make your own rules.

Otto, your opinion is shared by many-- and hotly contested by many as well.

Writing fiction based on extant works can be a ton of fun-- sometimes you need to "know what happened after that" and sometimes you want to fix the authors fuckups, and sometimes you just want to play in someone else's sandbox for awhile. Not something I do very often, but some people concentrate on it and are very good at it. It's a hobby. Many hobbies are incomprehensible to outsiders.

I've written one story about a living celeb, and I am very conflicted about doing so. The only celebs I'm inspired to only about are people who have struck me in admirable ways, (needless to say, a very short list) and those are exactly the people I don't want to dispresect. the rest of them, I don't care about to write.

An interesting quandary. Reminds me of that Seinfeld comment that he can't have sex with someone that he admires. Then again, his remark was by his fictitious self and probably has more to do with unresolved self-loathing caused by absorption of prudish sexual mores. But that's another issue.

I suspect that yours is more to do with a desire to respect the privacy of those few celebrities whom you truly admire.

Not sure about fanfic, but if I had a fantasy about a celeb, I might get inspired to actually write something. Hmmm....

I'm not much of a writer. Chris is much better.

Yes, because I'd gladly jump the bones of any one of them! :D

And want to brag about it afterwards. But I wouldn't. I swear.

I'm with you on shagging people I admire, Stella, and I'm a regular in the Celebrities section.

Disclaimers should include statements that the story is fiction, you don't own the characters, and you're not writing for financial profit. Beyond that, it's up to you.

Useful tips. Thank you. I still think it sad that people would actually need such a disclaimer to know the difference between fantasy and reality.

hey, this is the country that needs warnings on things like cups of coffee; "Contents are hot, and may scald!" and plastic bags; "This is not a children's toy!" and electric appliances; "Do not immerse in water while plugged in!"

Happens all the time. Read some of the comments in LW. Other categories to, though probably not as much. People think if something is in print it must be true.
