I have come to understand that many people reading literotica have problems with celebrity stories. I cannot understand why. Can someone please explain?.

*This is my personal opinion and not meant as anything other than that*

I think it's a privacy and courtesy thing. Celebrities are real people too.

Can't imagine how it would feel to stumble across a story about myself performing all manner of sexual acts and generally behaving in a totally out of character way.

I've written fics about characters in TV shows, but never the actors. To me, that's stepping over a line and into their private lives. I don't feel I have a right to go there.

I agree with Starrkers completely...

I agree with the privacy of the individual.

However, I find celebrity stories about either characters in the media or the people themselves to generally be very boring. There's too often no story, no character, no plot, no conflict, no emotion. The fame alone is supposed to carry the story.

It doesn't.

I too feel that respect is an issue. On the other hand I've written one, and published it here- it had to be done. I did my damnedest to keep it loving and respectful, because these are two people that I do love and respect.

There's another category of celeb stories that i see here- a sort of revenge fantasy, where Miss Big Star gets taken down. I think that's.... interesting.

There are some celeb stories here that I would delete if I had the authority to do so. Although that would be because they are so poorly written, more than anything else

(I wanna edit this to say- my views as expressed are on the topic of real people-
On literotica, fanfic ends up classed with Celeb, and since you are a Ravenclaw, ;) maybe that's what your concern is about- and I don't much care what anyone does with a fictional character.

Just me, just me.)

Celebrity eh? tcha.

Those that court it (Vicky B., Tarraraparmatomkinson, Paris & Nicole) those that are famous for being famous are cardboard media cutouts anyway. Their 'personae' are no more RL than Holmes and Watson.

A similar case can be made for those that believe their own publicity.

What strikes me as 'bad form' (on both sides) is papparazi (include celeb. stories here) intrusion and the belief that a person can be two completely seperate people.

I agree that a person's private life is their own, but celebrite, as well as reward brings it's own price.

Having written a celeb story, I can understand your point of view. However, sometimes, celeb stuff is done in a less than considerate way, in a way that libels the person in question.

Now, the one that I wrote, "Connie Nielsen's Nude Affair," was in no way intended to slam or bad mouth the actress in question, who happens to be my all-time favorite actress, in fact. The other actress is another of my faves, and I make a point of portraying them as people (at least as far as I know) without actually claiming that this was true about them. Far from it, in fact.

I have to admit that revenge fantasy ideas have occurred, but only against celebrities that invite antagonism (Jessica Simpson, for example). It wasn't because they are popular. It was because they are annoying. There's a difference. If I ever actually wrote something of the sort, I'd be sure to handle it in a way that wasn't suggestive of stalking. I'd have to be somewhat careful about it.

Since there was nothing derogatory about my overall depiction of the celebrities in question in my particular tale, I don't see the issue. People are probably more upset by my version of the Christmas story than that. (Even though I stipulate that it is fiction, not fact.)

I'm not so sure people here have a problem with celebrity stories, just that Lit isn't a very good venue for them. People mostly come here to read and post original fiction. I think another reason they don't do as well as original fic is because it's hard to find a story about the celebrity you're looking for unless their name is in the title. If you want a good response to a celebrity story or you're looking for a certain kind of story to read, I'd look on blog communities or fanfic sites specific to your fandom.

I think another reason is lack of identification with the character. As a reader, I want to feel like I can step into the story; I might identify with the main character, or a secondary character, or I might feel like the main character is someone I know, or someone I might have been in a slightly altered reality.

But if the main character is a celebrity, that person is too clearly NOT me for me to be able to "step into" the story. Just leaves me cold. That's why the classic "everyman" character is so popular.

Maybe it's just me, but I think this can be a factor.....Carney
