Celebrities: Audience Insert

I never really spent time in the Fan Fiction & Celebrities category, because on the celebs side I'm not sure I could write real people into a fictional story. That said, I just had this opening for a FF&C story pop into my head and I'd like to share it here for anyone who'd like to use it or a variation of it. If you or someone you know already has used an opening like this, well...excellent! Nice to know I have the occasional good idea.

"You are the audience insert."

I just looked at Bob, waiting for him to elaborate, but he just stared back. As one of the executive producers on this project, I was hoping for a bit more from him.

"So, that's why I haven't got a single line in the entire movie?"

"You don't have a SAG card either, but this project will fix that. Look, this is Scarlett's project. She's the star, the focus, and the camera will be on her ninety percent of the time. But you'll be there, the inert. The surrogate. Your silence and limited screen time means people will be able to put themselves in your shoes, live out the fantasy of falling in love with Scarlett Johansson for 90 minutes. And you...you get the honor of being there! Taking her hand, dancing under the stars...did you even get to third act? There's kissing. There's an intimacy coordinator and everything."

"OK, OK!" I waved my arms in surrender. "I'm in, I'm not an idiot. It's just...nevermind, I'm good."

And then, for the entire story you never give the main character a name. You can name everyone else, even Bob the Janitor who shows up in one paragraph and grunts, but never name the Audience Insert.

It's an interesting idea. Give it a try. But since hardly anyone spends time in FF&C, I'd create a fictional character in a Sunset Boulevard sort of way, for the audience to fall in love with. Then you can put it in any category it fits in. Use SJ as a template if you want, she's certainly worthy, but change the name if you want people to find the story.
