Senegal won vs France today 1:0. France is the reigning World Champion and Senegal, a former colony of France, is a first time participant at the World Cup.
After their victory the whole capital of Senegal, Dhakar, was celebrating. Draped in Senegalese flags they went to the President's residence. The President then stood on a car draped in a flag holding a footbool high. He was driven through the capital standing on the car. No security, just overwhelming joy. Tomorrow is a national holiday, because Senegal won.
For some it might just be a surprise victory, but for them it is liberating. When they interviewed some of the cheering crowd they said they felt like the besieged part of the colonial heritage. It was an honest joy over a small victory. For them it doesn't matter if they go through to the next round now. All for them that mattered is that they put Senegal on our maps and showed that they had potential and that they are willing to win.
Call me emotional and sensitive but that really touched me. They were as happy as the French were when they won the World Cup title four years ago. If France would have won nobody would have really cared all that much - because it was expected. Now a poor country wins. Wonderful.
