Out of curiosity, how many of you have ceiling hooks, which are there specifically for BDSM purposes?

Do you use them to hold a lover's arms up, or do you use them for more heavy-duty work, like suspension?

For those of you who are into suspension, tell me about it.. I'm curious.

What do you use your ceiling hooks for? (Potted plants and hanging baskets are NOT the answer I'm looking for! *grin* )

I haven't tried suspension, but I am also curious, E wants to try it with me and I'm concerned because I'm not the smallest person in the world (5'7" and a bit heavier than average) and I don't know if would be possible for me to be suspended. I will be interested in the replies to this thread!! :)

Suspension as in suspending yourself by piercings or in any form of being suspended (cocoons, chain nets)? I have a one or two acquaintances who are into the former but other than that, I can't help much.

Either. I'm just really interested in the whole deal.

For me, no piercings, just ropes or chain nets and the like.

We've had a ceiling hook above the bed. Master uses it to secure my wrists to ... but has also attached a speader bar to it, which i've dangled from by my ankles as well. He uses canvas cuffs which secure with velcro and provide for a bit more comfortable grip. To say that i enjoy this type of positioning for play would be an absolute understatement at best.

We now have a free standing full canopy over the bed ... mosquito netting which hangs by cuphooks. Easy enough to explain the hook to anyone who might ask ... it appears to others as being in place to serve as support and drooping of the canopy's center.

Ooooo, I've always wanted mosquito netting abuve my bed. Hmmmm, so that's how to explain it huh? Sounds like a lot of fun, I'll have to try that some time, not too sure about the hanging from the ankles. Didn't you get a huge head rush? I'm prone to migraines and I think it would be bad for me to be upside down for very long. But deffinatly have to try the wrists on the hook thing! :D

We do alot of suspension and actually have a sort of suspension unit in our bedroom. When asked what it is for I tell people that it was there before I arrived here and I think it was used to hang leather from (we are in the leather business) they always believe me and have asked no more. People within the scene look at it and just know. We also have a cage in our room *laughs* we tell people it is for the dog.

As for suspension a few rules to remain safe. Spreader bars are just that "spreader" bars there is a difference between suspension bars and spreader bars. One means being safe the other means being at risk.

Suspension cuffs - yup once again these are designed to be used specifically for suspension, you can use regular cuffs but you will find that the experience is not as enjoyable.

Nets, slings, swings, and harness make sure all gear is weight compatiable, if they won't gurantee that it will support 400 or 500 pounds then don't buy it. (most bdsm stuff they do not gurantee this) when/if you do buy suspension gear always check it before use.

Make sure if using a harness that the weight is evenly distributed.

hope this was helpful!!

Spreader bars, suspension bars .. pffft .. many of our toys are homemade, AND safe ... best of both worlds found it that.

Speaking of safety, ... one of the wonderful things about BDSM is being free to define it for ourselves (using the word in a general context) .. and comfort zones regarding safety will differ among us all. Regardless, is it ever really 100% safe? Nope. ;)

HI sinn0cent1

yup your correct we define safety - hence why we prefer R.A.C.K. instead of SSC. As for the equipment since we manufacture BDSM gear safety is our utmost priority, we do not take chances with our customers, therefore spreader bars are made from wood and suspension bars from steel, the suspension bars could stand 300 pounds, but I would not gurantee that on the wooden bars.

The point is to be safe, in whatever *your* level of comfort it.

Master has suspended me once and I hated it. We have heavy eyebolts going through the ceiling to the load-bearing struts in the attic, and I STILL have a problem believing it will hold up all 175 pounds of me! I have broken our spreader bar... :(

DO NOT use "ceiling hooks" for suspensions, PLEAAAASE people!

Unless you are putting your bolt THROUGH a structural beam and putting your screw nut on the TOP of the structural beam.

I also am not a fan of full suspension off the wrists or ankles, sometimes off the ankles if you are going over boots....I really prefer to use the chest and hips as the main weight bearing points and I know people who have permanent nerve damage due to diong otherwise.

Suspension done wrong will kill people. I generally believe we are able to define "safe" for ourselves, but this is not a relative statement. Suspension done wrong will kill people because if you fall without use of your hands or feet to break your fall you may well take the brunt of the fall on your face/neck/back. We need those parts.

I do my suspension work off a structural metal beam in my basement that is, happily, exposed and low. I tie a steel ring made specifically for shibari off this beam with hemp rope, quadrupled (rated for 1200 pounds per strand.)

If you don't have a structural beam, I don't think suspension can be done safely without a very very sturdy tree outside or a rack made for suspension.

You can be suspended. 300 plus pound people can be suspended. People can be suspended in wheelchairs. Anything can be done with enough ingenuity and attention to safety and mechanics.

When I was suspended I weighed in around 171 or so, it was no problem.
