Wrangler is currently running commercials with this song. Specifically the part that goes:

...Some folks are born made to wave the flag
Oh they're red, white and blue...

I always took this song as a slam against phony people. It always seems to show up in patriotic type situations though.

Hmmm.

Maybe the G 'n' T's are kicking in.

They may have been how it was intended to be interpreted at the time John Fogerty wrote it, but as we all know times change. That line now could just as easily be seen ( if standing alone outside the context of the song) as a very pro-american, patriotic statement along the lines of "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy".

I understand that, but it is taken out of context and only using a portion of it doesn't change the meaning for me. It seems like someone with a 2 second attention span decided, "Hey, this is pro-American, let's use it" without listening to the next line.

At least they had the decency to use the original artist and not have some nobody sing it.

Hell yes it's anti establishment anti war for sure. It sells trucks though I suppose

I was surprised to hear- through my teenage son pipeline- that a lot of teenagers have been liking CCR even now. They had some great songs.

My favs are:

1. Green River (had to take a picture of the sign in Idaho or wherever that is when I drove across country)
2. Tombstone Shadow (live version off The Concert)
3. All of the Pendulum album

Speaking of taking CCR out of context, which is correct?

a. Sweet hitchhiker, won't you ride on my fast machine.

or

b. Sweet hitchhiker, won't you ride on my face...

I may have to go and listen now.

I'll always agree with the fact the it was (and still is) and anti-establishment song. Ahhhh Soblue we meet again! That's great your kids like CCR. I was a fan when I was a teenager.......I'm only 26 so that tells you how far back I go :D . I was one of those people who made an effort to look at more than what was popular, CCR and Yes were just about as unpopular as could be when I first found them. Yeah I hate when a song gets used in a commerical and it's not the original, it's usually just not quite up to snuff, if you take my meaning. Shame about CCR and that they all hate each other now. Real shame about how badly John Fogerty has been royally shafted by both his former band mates and his former record label.

I'm only 30 so I know what you mean. I don't choose my music because it's popular, in fact that's a good enough reason to stear clear of it altogether.

Fogerty can still crank it out, Blue Moon Swamp is as good or better than a lot of CCR's stuff. No way I'd go see Creedence Clearwater REVISTED. CCR to me has always been Fogerty. Without him it's not the same.

Well I've been trying to raise him right dammit! :D He can usually recognize anything from Jethro Tull to Zappa to Black Sabbath. His favorite songs in the car as a toddler were on an old Janis Jopplin tape I used to play for him :)

Sounds like you've done a helluva job, Blue. Although, Tull? Deep Purple ok, but Tull? Oh well we were boud to disagree at some point, lol.

my dad was a huge CCR fan and I'll always thank him for that.

as for music in commercials, well, you just can't take it too seriously. Just as Springsteen's "Born in the USA" has been used to sell stuff too, and it's actually a rather similar song in spirit to "Fortunate Son". If it gets people listening to the music, great for them. If it just gets them to buy a truck, well, I suppose it's good for an auto worker somewhere, or something...

Good point, but it's out of context, so does that diminish it's original meaning?

Rock should not include Flute solos!

Well the odd one here and there is ok, but to make a career out of it? Jimmy Page used to have a joke about Tull: "Tonight, One night only, Jethro Dull bores `em at the Forum (L.A.)" Pagey always had a wicked sense of humor.

Oh I'm hurt! But...but...I like the crazy dancing man with the flute!

Sorry, `bout that. You mean Ian Anderson and his birdman act? I'll say this though Martin Barre is a pretty good guitarist.
