"He's a hot mess," Susan Newman, 53, a teacher from nearby Laurel Park who voted for Cawthorn two years ago, said in the parking lot of an Ingles grocery store. "I really don’t see him doing anything in the district — and he just keeps getting in trouble."
But the 26-year-old first-term lawmaker has a lot going for him: the advantages of incumbency, the support of former President Donald Trump and a field of rivals so crowded that it may be hard for any one of them to beat him.
Political insiders here say it's Cawthorn's race to lose — but if he does, it will be his own fault.

That's in part because of a striking pattern of unusual behavior: speeding without a valid driver’s license; taking a firearm through security at an airport; wearing lingerie in photos; appearing in a video in which a staffer pantomimes a grab for his groin; gyrating naked on top of another man in bed; accusing un-named lawmakers of inhaling cocaine and inviting him to an orgy; promoting a cryptocurrency in ways that prompted critics to claim he engaged in insider trading; and calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “a thug.”

a crowded field, and him needing only 30% of the votes (the rest being so split between rivals he might well achieve that), means he may end up as the one running against a democrat. The more extreme these rep primary winners are, the more likely it will be a positive for democrats. Of course, i also have to hope common sense prevails and more 'normal' reps win for the sake of their constituents, i guess, rep or dem. 😶

In the areas where the nutjobs win and go on to win against dems? These areas are more likely to attract new, similarly minded residents while regular people make an exodus.

Eh, that's a very God, guns and gays district. If Cawthorn survives the primary, I could see him getting a lower share of the vote than a Republican would normally get, but he'll probably still win. Which does at least mean he, along with MTG and Boebert and so forth will be an albatross around the neck of GOP nominees in purple districts everywhere - a vote for any Republican is a vote to put those nutjobs in the majority.

Win the primary and lose the election. That will be the GOP’s fortune going forward.

If justice is done, this will be the case...but sadly, this is not true everywhere.
In Idaho, you could put Putin, Hitler or some serial child rapist on the ballot as a Republican- and they'd probably win a general election.

Not just Idaho, scary actually.

Outgoing members of Congress are required to pass along ongoing constituent service information to their successors.

Former Rep. Madison Cawthorn reportedly didn't hand over any of his office's constituent casework to his successor, Rep. Chuck Edwards, creating a mess for the freshman representative.
His office said in a press release on Monday that he and his staff have "have no way of knowing which constituents had ongoing casework or other outstanding federal issues" and that there have been multiple attempts to reach Cawthorn — who's now living in Florida — and his staff, to no avail.

cawthorn had right up til dec 23rd '22, but didn't bother to help those he was supposed to and has since refused to take calls or reply to edward's inquiries about the case files. too busy funning it up in floriduh.

now edwards is reduced to asking the public—particularly those with ongoing case files his office was in the process of helping—to let him know about their cases. edwards has also asked the media for help.

what. a. shitshow.
