1: Cathy (narrative).
Cathy read through the short list of local jobs displayed on the electronic information board, and as was the usual case, they meant nothing to her. It was just routine. One day in every week she would visit the job centre to see what was on offer, but the only thing that made those visits important to her was the fact that she could meet up with ‘Kandy’.
That day Kandy was late and Cathy was not the only client worried about his whereabouts. She gazed around the reception area looking at familiar faces. Men and women of all ages, young single parent women with children in push chairs, groups of youths and middle-aged men reading newspapers or staring blankly and expectantly into space...waiting. Like Cathy, most of them were not there seeking work, but waiting for Kandy to arrive with what he had to offer. A tap on her shoulder made her turn quickly to see the stubble-faced man she had noticed quite often waiting with the others.
“Seen him love?” he asked. Cathy shuck her head in reply. “Bastard! I can’t wait here all fuckin’ morning. I have places to go and people to see. The twat owes me one.” She stared back at him and curled her lip in reply. He was not the only one disappointed by Kandy’s non-arrival.
Then everyone seemed to look towards the entrance at the same time. Kandy walked in and looked around smiling. Those who needed him wanted to rush towards him at once, but they knew that if they did it would only give the game away, and he knew the power of his presence as he grinned back at them.
Kandy looked as if he did not belong there with his expensive leather jacket and high fashion slacks. The two men that followed him stood by the entrance looking as mean and as tough as everyone knew they were and they waited. He noticed Cathy by the information board. Her blonde hair falling in loose curls and her petite youthful physique had always attracted him ever since he knew her during the past two or three years.
But she was important to him for business. Infact, she was the most important person there out of all the others waiting. He sucked his teeth and walked towards her, staring endlessly at her legs disappearing up into the short skirt that shaped her rear appealingly and his thoughts of what he would like to do to her began to race through his mind.
She looked back down at the notice board as Kandy stood behind her. “Bet you thought I wasn’t coming didn’t you?” he whispered, leaning into her intimately. “Well I’m here now.” Cathy opened her purse and handed back a wad of notes. “Good girl,” he told her as he snatched the money quickly from her fingers. “Looks like you’ve been busy on your patch. Things must be getting really desperate these days. All of your punters getting spaced out more than usual then?”
“The usual if you don’t mind.” Cathy replied. Kandy pushed into her even more and laughed. “And don’t get fresh. Just give us the stuff and leave me alone.”
“A bit short this week babe. Hard times upon us it seems.” He took out a package from his jacket and quickly dropped it into her open purse. “So I need a little more extra from you next week. Understand?”
Cathy continued to search the notice board as Kandy moved away to deal with his other individual clients in turn. “Fuck you,” she said, under her breath, watching him do his business. Small plastic bags exchanged hands for money carefully so as not to attract unwanted attention from prying eyes. She hated him really, but it was her only means of making some cash. A percentage cut of the takings and Kandy in a way trusted her with doing that.
“Miss Forest!” The voice made her look around towards the reception desk and her careers advisor looking as cute but efficient as always. “I want a word with you if you don’t mind. That is, of course, if you’re not too busy?” She walked over to him slowly, returning his smile and then stood looking back at him, irreverently.
“What?”
“I thought you might be in today for some reason. I get to know these habits you see. Part of my job to know these things.”
“Get on with it.”
“Well. I have something for you. Maybe a lot better than what you actually came here for in the first place. It’s a future even. Respectable. It’s something we tend to call work around here. But I don’t expect that you understand exactly what that is?”
“So cut the crap and tell me?”
“A job Miss Forest. I have a job for you. And this time I really want you to give this one your devoted attention. That is, if you have the time? It fits every single detail you want in a job. Or should I say, what you wrote down in your career profile a few months ago…remember that?”
Cathy stood and stared at him as he spoke to her with that usual sarcasm. She heard what he said, but at the same time she imagined him naked and sitting by the PC at home, masturbating to some erotic imagery extracted from an internet porn site. The thoughts in her head amused her as he handed over the slip giving all the details of the job assignment.
“You know Mister Burton. You remind me of my old maths teacher.”
“Oh do I? How so?”
“Yes…he was a real wanker, just like you.” She smiled and bid him a kind farewell.
The job was more appealing than she had imagined. The wage was generous. More generous than any other she had ever heard of for someone her age. There was training and even a day release education course, an office of her own and lots of flexible working hours, all paid for, that is if she could do it. It did seem more interesting than peddling drugs on her run down council estate and it offered a respectable future and an escape from her drab boring life with her ‘criminally’ known notorious family.
