Category Streamlining

I don't want to necessarily fix something that "ain't broke," but I have begun to wonder if there are, possibly, too many categories. We finish a story and often it is a difficult choice to decide what basket to throw it into. If I write about a wife bringing home a woman for a threesome, does it become "loving wives" or "group sex?" I'm putting the finishing touches on a "first time" story in which the main characters are cousins. My emphasis is on the "first-time"- ness of it, with its appropriate awkwardness and guilt, but I may have to slightly alter the relationship (I have a pretty good plan B) because I would just as soon not put it in "incest/taboo." I can see how "romance" and "erotic couplings" can have the same blurred lines.
Is it possible that the categories could be streamlined, with a greater emphasis placed on the story tags? For example, I like "anal," but prefer being forewarned if it's "gay male" ( no disrespect intended; it's just not my thing.)

You can ask, but don't expect any changes to the category system any time soon. The site has advised it's working on the tags system, and hopefully that's where you'll see improvements, but it's a very slow process.

And you'll see the threads asking for more categories, or splitting existing ones to separate categories, so ....

Perhaps the better solution would be to allow selecting multiple categories where relevant - the threeway courtesy of the wife is then both group sex and l/w, resolving the issue neatly. It'd resolve the dilemma of a story not quite fitting a single category and avoid splitting categories into ever finer chunks or bloating them by merging them together.

You do get up to ten tags, which covers most of what you'll need. There is another site that has about fifty-seven categories, which is nice for flexibility but I don't expect to see it happen here any time soon. They also let you pick your own tags; I forgot if there is a limit on the number.

There is yet another site that only offers a predetermined list of both categories and tags. It's kind of restricting but you learn to live with it.
