So I'm writing a story about a woman who has to come to term with her dad dying. An angel visits her, and she ends up having sex with a younger version of her dad that is actually the angel.

Which category should it go in--nonhuman or incest? I'm worried the nonhuman readers might be turned off by the incest, but will incest readers care that it's not actually incest?

Traditionally Angels have no genitalia - so maybe, non-erotic!

How the incest readers would feel about it depends upon how much you stress that part. If it's in passing, or you hint that the angel just looks like him rather than it being him, you'll lose points.

Non-Human and Sci-Fi readers tend to pay attention to warnings and heed them rather than use them as an excuse to trash a story. So, an incest warning will keep readers there from being surprised and squicked by the incest, which should keep it from hurting your score there.

It will cut down on readership, though. Ditto for the non-human elements in incest.

There's a high probability that it will suffer in readership no matter where you put it. These are two subjects that don't mesh together all that well, as far as the reader bases go.

Incest

Non-human is typical for Angels, but the rule of thumb here is that Incest always comes first. If it's in any way a heterosexual incest story than nothing else matters, to Incest it goes. Why? Because those who don't like incest really don't like it and feel it ruins their category (i.e. "that beautiful Angel story in non-human was ruined for me because the Angel was her dad!"). Meanwhile, those who like Incest really like it and don't mind the twists ("Wow. I don't usually go for Angel stories but this one was awesome because the Angel was her dad!").

You get the picture. Go for Incest. Oh, and another plus side is that it gets a lot of readers who give stories high marks.

Gay male is another one of those 'trump' threads that I go into. Technically, I've written BDSM, Mature, First Time, Nonhuman, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, and Letters & Transcripts.

But all of those go into gay male. No one in GM is bothered by some werewolves, dystopia, whips&chains, etc. But the werewolf people might have a problem with GM.

Same goes for incest.

I think you should post your piece in the Loving Wives category.

If you are going to get "1" bombed anyways you might as well go for the gusto! ;)

I think the key question is where Laurel will put it. It's a daughter and a dad no matter what the other subtle issues are, so I'm betting she'll put it in incest--if she notices it's a daughter and a dad. The way those in the erotica field approach incest is that it doesn't have to be strictly biological to be incest--it's the thought that counts.

I actually wondered about that! I did plan on the angel not having an orgasm--he has the equipment but not the plumbing, you could say.

It's definitely a major plot point, so I will put it in Incest.

If she marries the angel, could I put it in Loving Wives? :)

Only if she cheated on him. ;)

As a note of warning: LW's is a shark tank full of self serving trolls.

ETA: If you're interested, here is how I handled the Angel in a story. It's three chapters. Daisy

What would be the fun in that?
I have to agree. Not only will you disappoint Incest readers (they're going to want daddy to get off as much as daughter does), but you'll disappoint those wanting to know what happens when an angel orgasms. Do iridescent feathers explode from his wings? Does his halo go spinning off? Do heavenly choirs ring across the cosmos?

You're a writer! Man-up and take on that challenge of showing us daddy-angel's orgasm.

I had this same dilemma.

In the Halloween Contest I wrote a story about a son who had the hots for his mother, but never told her. She died in a car accident(his father was already gone and he's 21 and lives on his own)

He never got over it and he currently has this girl his age with a crush on him. She is a bit of an amateur medium who invites him over for a seance. The mother possesses her and they have sex,

The dialogue is incest, but its the young girls face and body.

Story ends with the mother leaving and the girl remembering it as if he was sleeping with and loving her. Happily ever after

So same debate, incest or not really?

I put it in incest and did not get one complaint and it ended with a decent score and some good comments.

On the other hand any incestuous overtones or "pseudo incest" may very well get you flamed in another category.

here is mine is you want to look it over and see if yours is similar.

One of the top rated stories in Sci Fi is incest, but they make it clear right in the description.

Categorization can play hell when you want a surprise ending. If it isn't a surprise ending go with incest. If it is, I would say go with non-human to preserve the integrity of the surprise, but be ready to take reader flak if they find it squicky. YMMV.

It's best to put it in incest/taboo category. Although the readership for incest is really high, there are those who fully despise it, I am one of the latter. I read nonhuman category and would be very pissed off coming across something incest without a warning. I don't care how vague a writer is about the relationship of the characters but if it mentions brother/sister/mother/father, it's incest if there is anything sexual between them.

If you "surprise" someone with incest you will be flamed until there is no tomorrow.

And if you're speaking of speaking of this story

Let me explain something. Paco Fear had a large following before that story came out and before he put this out he wrote "Words on Skin" The single best incest story on this site (number 3/4 all time, but due to ballot stuffing this is your winner)

Because of that he had a huge influx of incest fans read that story. They, not the sci fi crowd gave that tale its WHE and its pretty much cult status,

Had this been one of his first and with no warning her might have been torched as well.

So, a little something to think about.

I'm writing a piece where the female lead is a witch. When she orgasms the candles around her shoot up into flames and her familiar (a crow) always starts squawking and becomes quite excited.

Just something I made up for good bad or indifferent.

The whole idea behind the not orgasming was that he was doing it for her benefit, not his. He's not sexually attracted to her and he doesn't have human feelings. Unlike human guys, he doesn't care if he gets off! :D

Also, he's supposed to be really bad at his job, so maybe he'll forget that that's supposed to happen.

Fair point, but putting a "surprise, the angel was your dad" ending in the incest story telegraphs the surprise, which would annoy me as a reader. Mileage varies.

"surprise you just fucked your dad" has been used as an ending in at least one book and movie I know of, both of which are highly regarded. If it's good, the audience can deal.

Thank you everyone. I don't plan on it being a surprise or a plot twist, but here's the other problem: the woman isn't really sexually attracted to her father, just jealous of his relationships with other women. The angel decides to bring back her young father so she realizes that he loved her the most all along. Will incest readers hate that she's not hot for Daddy?

Now that I think about it, it's a really tortured way to write a sex scene into a short story. Maybe I really should put this in non-erotic!

If anyone has ever read Andrew Greeley, I think the angel in one of his books said he would kill the woman if he came in her.

But if it is incest there is no need to worry. If you're good enough you can still shock the reader.

Like 3113 says you're the author and its up to the author to deliver.

and surprise you fucked your dad is as old as stale bread it shows up in every damn Halloween contest or costumed themed incest story along with mom and sis.

the angel idea is more interesting and can be delivered as a surprise.

I defer to your expertise in the genre.

I call bullshit on that reasoning! He can be doing it for her benefit, etc. and *surprise* he still gets off (much to his shock and amazement--"Hallelujah, thank you Jesus!") and we get to see the bells and whistles.

I think readers want to see otherworldly beings, be they an angel or a Vulcan, feeling and experience not just human feelings, but otherworldly feelings from their encounter with a human. Because readers (especially women readers) put themselves in the place of that woman, and the one thing they want to believe is that they could make the Angel feel what no angel has felt for a human, and orgasm, which no angel has ever done--because she is that wondrous, she is that special.

And as for feeling for her...The joy of having sex with angel-daddy is so that the two of them can reconnect and show their feelings for each other. He can be surprised by his feelings, but if he has none for her, then what is he beyond a dildo carved in her father's image?

I would think an angel would be a boring fuck to begin with, look at the side they play for:rolleyes:

Bring on the Succubus!

You could always put him in the GM category. Those stories are boring as fuck anyways.
