What distinguishes stories in these categories?
- Loving Wives
- Romance
- Erotic Couplings

(besides the obvious 'wife' term...)

Thanks! I need to read more but a quick overview would help.

Loving Wives could be called "slut" wives. These are married couples and the wife has sex with another man, to the husband's anger or delight. This category generally pisses off most Lit readers.

Erotic Couplings - generic sex tale that doesn't fit anywhere else

Romance - just that - sex, but more gentle, more of a love story

Does this help?

Loving wives I really don't know what distinguishes it from the others. Except that some of the people that read that category are strange.

Romance has a lot of story. There will be more plot, more character build up, more conflict.

Erotic couplings is about two people getting it on.

You're welcome.

All I know is that Loving Wives ain't and i ain't going in there without a chair and a whip....

Loving Wives should really be called cheating wives, because that's what the overwhelming bulk of the stories are. You have several camps there that all want different things, and are very vocal in their dissapointment when you don't meet their desires. Comments in LW can sometimes be longer than the story they're commenting about.

If you write a cheating story and put it in any other category, you're likely to be told it should be in Loving Wives. Likewise, if you write a story that's not about cheating and put it in LW, you'll get crucified over it by the bulk of the readers.

I group the bulk of the LW readers into three camps: Those who want wimpy cuckold husbands that simply accept their slutty wife, those who want the husband to take horrific revenge on his cheating wife, and those who want to see reconcilliation between the couple after the cheating is over.

And they'll all down-vote or leave harsh/nasty comments if you write a story that doesn't meet their needs quite often. Wear a chain-mail suit if you dive into those shark-infested waters.

In romance, the readers are more forgiving of both longer stories, and of stories with little to no sex. Romance readers are looking for plot, build-up, and emotion. Hot well-written sex certainly doesn't hurt, but if the rest of the story is good enough, you'll come out fine.

When in doubt, Erotic Couplings. If your story doesn't fit obviously into another cat ( lesbian, gay male, etc ) you can drop it in EC and few will find it odd to see the story there.

All the comments are right-on. I'd just add that some writers put stories in given categories just because of the readers. You'll get the most views in LW, but the criticism is the harshest. EC is generally easier, but with less views (although still healthy). Romance usually has the least of the three (my Romance stories are less than 1/3 of the views of my others, despite both stories being rated higher than any of my others). The categories are interchangeable, it's more about what the author is looking for.

That depends upon your usual category. Most of my work is in Sci-Fi/Fantasy, and my Romance story easily has three times the reads of everything else in a similar time frame ( save the LW story which runs just under half-again as many views as the Romance )

If you're used to the reads from Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Non-Human, Humor, Novels, etc., then the jump is rather staggering when you step out into the more mainstream categories.

If you really just want to see your views go through the ceiling, write Incest *laugh*

ha! that is so true! I tossed off (so to speak) an Incest story and the views are insane!

I had thought my story was either EC or LW, and it ended up in Romance. Guess it was softercore than I though!

Thanks everyone for your help!

I think Dark covered LW very well. But just to compare:

In LW, readers want to see the wife cheat--which is not to say that every story in LW is about a cheating wife, but that's what most readers want and expect from the category. As the title suggests, a husband and wife have to be involved--this is not true of the other categories where the man and woman can be unmarried. As said, the husband may accept the cheating, or get revenge, or there might be reconsilation, but it's all about the sultry, sexuality of cheating and the sultry, sexual way a married couple deals with this cheating.

Romance readers do not want to read a story about a cheating wife or husband. They want, well, romance. That means that if there is a cheating wife or husband, said wife/husband appears at the beginning to destroy the ex-husband/ex-wife's heart and then leaves. The rest of the story is how this broken hearted person finds someone new to repair that broken heart and give them the love and happiness they deserve.

Most (but not all) romance stories, however, involve a story of an unmarried/divorced/widowed boy and a girl, meeting, getting to know each other, having some romantic moments, maybe a misunderstanding, transforming each other, and coming together at the end. Romance readers will happily read a story that goes on for chapters and chapters, so, as said, Romance readers usually (but not always) expect a story where the sex is secondary, not primary.

The Erotic Couples reader just want to read about a fun or interesting sexual encounter between one guy and one girl (or perhaps a threesome). From what I've seen there, the guy and gal are usually unmarried and the story is really all about the encounter and how it leads to sex. Sex can easily be the *primary* focus of the story, with very little plot outside of an excuse for the couple to get naked.

"Erotic Couples" would strictly be a couple, and not married to each other. If there is a third party involved in the sex, it will be placed in "Group". Because EC is such a big category, the Management will put a story elsewhere if they can, even if you list it as an EC story.

My story with the most views is in Non-Consent. It is not highly ranked but has about 120,000 views. Actually it is role-playing a gang rape, and everybody has fun. It has received few, if any PC.

I had one story about a loving couple that I posted to LW because I was dumb enough to think that a category named "Loving Wives" would be about loving wives. It got decent feedback but didn't rank very high. Maybe the trolls were disappointed but didn't feel right about criticizing the story. Later, I switched it to "First Time" because it was about two virgins on their wedding night.
