Hello from a new writer.

I am attempting to write for the first time, and am starting by telling my life story (the parts that readers here might enjoy) before venturing into fiction. I have written a few chapters and am waiting for my first story to go up any day now. All chapters will have the same title with the number following, of course.

Here's the question(s): Each chapter will detail a new experience for the most part, although they will sometimes have more than one topic. In order for readers to be able to find the stories better if they want to, should they all be put under the same topic? If anyone has written something similarly structured, how did you handle it? Does it matter?

It seems like the Erotic Couplings section is the catch all category, and I suppose that it's the only one that all the chapters would accurately fit into.

Sorry for my convoluted question that probably has a much shorter answer.

Erotic couplings is a kind of catch all. As such the site operators will often move a story to a more fitting category. Working a multi chapter story, with each chapter detailing a new experince would be difficult from the stand point of cats here at lit. One option is to submit it to novels and novellas.

I've seenit handled in several ways, but I don't know which, if any, is the best.

Welcome to the Ah :)

In general, you can put a story into any category that you want to. Certain plot items will result in a story being put into a specific category by management. An example, which probably does not apply, is that incest action will result in the story being placed in the Incest category.

I would suggest that you first read a sampling of the stories in the category(ies) into which you intend to submit your story. If your story tends to fit in with the existing samples, then you may have found a good fit.

I would suggest that you not only read the stories in the categories you are researching, but also the Public Comments. In some of the cartegories there is not so much an audience of readers as there is a lynch mob [Loving Wives comes to mind here].

Welcome to the AH. :rose:
I think you will find that most authors here are friendly and helpful and could probably answer your question with great ease...the notable exception would be myself. :D
I've seen authors post chapters in the same catagory and also post across different catagories. I think it really depends on the content. Usually readers will find the different chapters by finding the authors name. If they really like the story, they will find the chapters that way. I wouldnt worry about it too much. But then again I wouldnt rely on any advice you get from someone like me:D

Like maggot said ( ) I don't believe it's necessary to put them all in the same category. Your stories will be listed chronologically by chapter on your Bio page anyway, so maybe you should put each chapter in the category that suits it the best.

As you touch the different categories you just may attract more readers as a result.

Welcome to the AH!

Thank you so much. I thought that since it was not fiction it would be kind of deceptive of me to misrepresent it as such. I also felt guilty posting on the author's hangout before officially having something up here too, so that gives you an idea of what I'm like.

I have done that in my lurkings over the last few weeks. Some of those reactions to stories were part of the reason I asked the question, because I don't want to inflame the readers, some of whom seem rather... "excitable"?

Perhaps dissatisfied readers should be offered a refund of their membership fees.

Hello and welcome Rebecca! I don't have any more adivce to give really,I have a story going up in parts right now and the parts end up in different categories, I honestly don't know if this harms them or not, well one went in loving wives and was completely lynched -so, be careful of submitting in loving wives is my advice to you!

hope to see you posting here even more, let us have a link to your story when it's accepted!

Thanks! Maybe after it goes up I'll be in hiding. The suspense is killing me. I wish you would get an message or something to tell you when it's going up. This constant looking at my 'no approved submissions, yet' is making me crazy. Then again, I might have pulled it back out of consideration a dozen times already if it were possible. Looking at the thread where people listed the worst comments ever made on their stories made me cringe.

This line alone indicates those stories may be worth reading when posted.

Welcome...

Fuck'em, is my opinion.
And, don't forget, there are "BEST" opinions as well as worst. And when it comes from someone who's obviously thought about their reaction, and taken the time to explicate it,- it's all worth it.
If you get stupid feedback, bring it here, post it in the thread, we will all laugh with you and commiserate.
Other than that,- fuck'em.

Hi, Rebecca, and welcome to Lit. and the AH. You could post all the chapters to "Novels and Novellas" but the problem is that the category gets hardly any views. If each chapter is a stand-alone story, I would suggest posting them in the most appropriate cat. If one chapter is really a continuation of the previous one, such as waking up in the other person's bed, it should stay in the same category, even though the activities are different.

One problem with posting as separate stories rather than as a novel is that, if you have introduced a character in an earlier story, and he reappears in another story, you will have to re-establish that person's character. This would not be necessary in a novel.

Hello. Yes, each story will stand alone, at least to the extent I've able to make it possible without writing the entire back story at the start of each chapter. Still and all, it will probably help if they are all read, and in succession.

The novel idea was something I looked at with the thought of putting in a disclaimer, but that category did seem to be a neglected area, and the way I see this story ending up it would likely be over 15 literotica pages. I can't read anything nearly that long on a computer screen, and I'm not sure if anybody would.

I think I'm going with putting the chapters in the individual categories I think fit each one best and see what happens.

Thanks to everyone who was so sweet in offering their words of welcome and support.

ditto from me. :)
(watch out for Loving Wives) i always mention LW

I shifted category-to-category as i went chapter-to-chapter. It seemed fair to me to f=handle it like that.

But I think now that I was wrong. Views and votes drop off dramatically exactly at the spot I swap to another category. So now, I think I would recommend deciding where the work belongs as a whole, and posting it there.

This might not always work. The author does not always have the say as to where a story is to be classified. If you have a long story, mostly about lesbian sex, and classify the first chapter as such, subsequent chapters may not be posted there. For instance, if the protag. is getting it on with another woman and the other woman's husband joins in, it might be posted as Group sex. Or, if she is with two other women who are sisters, it might be considered to be incest. You might be able to include a request in the Notes section of the submission form to classify it as you ask.

I use Lesbian Sex as an example but the same thing might apply to almost any category, especially E/C.

Thanks to everyone who helped. My stories are up and running, and going into the category the particular story best fits. So far the results have been... interesting. I've gotten way more e-mails and messages than I have votes, but most everyone has been nice. Two gentlemen have informed me that I am a slut, although only one of them seemed to have a problem with that :D .

Thanks for the invite, English Lady. Hopefully there is a link below that will show the way to my tales posted thus far. The chapters up so far are light in comparison to what will follow. Hopefully readers will find a little wit, or half-wit, in the writing. If not, feel free to call me a slut  .

You are a naughty girl! Seriously, I enjoyed your work very much, Here's a banana for each chapter, plus an extra one for the chapter about the porn theatre, which was hilarious! :nana: :nana: :nana: :nana: :catroar:
