Casting Call & OOC Thread : The Land of Nod

I'm posting this thread for two reasons:

A- to see if anyone would actually be INTERESTED in playing in such a thread,

B- to keep in thread OOC posts to a minimum, if there's any interest generated.



The Land of Nod

The Land of Nod – the place our minds go when our consciousness isn’t looking. A home to dreamers, lovers, romantics, and those who yearn and yet live unfulfilled. Time in the Land of Nod is not measured by the spin of the earth, or the placement of the stars surrounding our planet. A land fit unto its own needs, time passes there as it wishes – yet always there seems to be a sufficient amount for anything and everything we aspire to do while there. A home to the fantasy, the dream, the surreal; it thrives on bringing to our hearts and unconscious, unfettered mind the true bliss and oblivion and joy and pleasure that we, as ever striving humans, seek.

Each trip to Nod is different – yet the castle and its surrounding grounds will ever be able to supply and utterly grant the slightest whim and desire that your soul should cry for. Everyone will visit the Land of Nod at some point in time – sometimes in sleeping, sometimes in daydreaming, and sometimes during those lost, vacant periods where we seem to operate on ‘auto-pilot’.

Every visit is different – never does your soul appear in the same outer trappings. This means that from one trip to another, your appearance (skin color, hair, size, dimensions, and yes even gender) can vary so greatly as to make each visit to the Land of Nod seem new and different. What this means is that you will appear (always in a different guise than the time before), and find yourself unleashed in a world full of people like yourself: hungry, seeking, needy people. Who and what you are searching for and how you find it in the Land of Nod is entirely up to each of the characters who step foot into our little tableau.


I know the story premise might sound a little weird; but I figure if I can guide each spurt of writing through ‘sunrise’, when they enter the Land of Nod, until ‘sunset’, when they must depart, then everyone will have time to write a brief but fun adventure as a different person – and the next ‘day’ in Nod you get to do the same thing, again, only with a different person, and a different adventure!

Personally I was thinking about this last night before I fell asleep and found the idea extremely appealing – there are no character sketches or personas set into stone; no psychological or physical descriptions that will ever stay true, because your mind will clothe itself in a different guise with every visit to the Land of Nod.

And if ever a ‘trip’ isn’t turning out the way you had hoped, or planned, or foreseen, then all you need do is go home and come back the next day – your mind and heart and soul still full of the searching need or hunger that draws you to the Land of Nod like the glowing spiritual beacon that it is.

Does any of this make sense or sound remotely fun or exciting? Just because its something I’d personally enjoy playing doesn’t necessarily make it universally appealing; hence, the need for an OOC thread / Casting Call to feel other SRP’ers out on this.

It sounds very appealing. My question for now is when you post sunrise to sunset. Are you allowing 3 days of ( real life time ) or do you think you'll manage the days as you read how folks are progressing through their adventures?

Honestly, at this point in time, I don't have a set timeframe in mind; it will probably wind up being anywhere between 3-5 days in real time, since I'd like to give all participants the opportunity to post their character info and get in some good interaction before their 'fantasy of the day' dissipates ...

how about a felxible day, during the week, monday to friday when people are going to be busy that can be a day, while the weekend itself can be another day when they're more likely to be around....hmm

Some go away on weekends and post here during the evenings. . .Perhaps if you give a "warning" day post. Or just see how it feels.

Not measuring time is also an option. You said these are like dreams, daydreams, or just mindless times... so .... who is to say how long your day dream lasts except you and the person you are writing with?

I should think that running one 'Nod day' from, say Monday morning until Friday and then another one from Friday night until Sunday night would be realistic; feasible - well, I am not so sure until we see how the speed of the thread moves along. Ideally, there won't need to be a 'set' schedule, and we can all move together at a similar pace, so players aren't sitting waiting for a new day to keep interacting with each other ...

However, these are all personal opinions, and are easily influenced by reality.

well I think if you try that at first and warn people that fantasies end after that day then they may be mor epersistant
also the days ending and beginning can just be a point to start or join a dream, you could carry on a dream through multiple days if you wanted to, e.g. on the second day, going back to sleep and waking up in the same situation you had left it the day before

Unfortunately, L_B, such a premise would undermine the ultimate point of the thread - that being that no matter who/what you were and what happened in your last visit, every trip to Nod is different and has nothing to do whatsoever with the previous one.

If I WERE to run a continuous 'dreamland', it would be modelled more completely around an alternate world of human enslavement, rather than a freely open castle and grounds that visitors can use as they wish...

Does that make sense?

Yes, it does and I agree with you, you'd lose the since of the thread. You could consider a similar dream... perhaps in one you are with the love of your life enjoying sex, but the next you are with them and they are not the one you want or are but they are completely different, perhaps violent or a different gender. I've had dreams where I was in my house, but it wasn't really the house I live in, but in my dream I thought it was my house... or my husband was there, but it wasn't the face of the man I'm really married to.

Would it be possible to give participants a certain number of posts each as a way of limiting the dream, rather than real-time days, since that can be difficult for some. I may have missed the point here so forgive me if I am wide of the mark!

Thats not an unreasonable suggestion, Chris; unfortunately my concern is this: some people will only make 2-3 posts in the length of one 'day' (like myself) that are at least 1-2 pages in length - but on the opposing side, some people will make 15-20 1-2 paragraph posts through the length of the 'day' to maximize their interaction.

I think, initially at least, the pace of the days is just going to be set by how people are doing in their RPs; i.e., if I encounter half the players who seem to be advancing through their Nod-days pretty well, I might post that the sun is shining from directly overhead, thereby prompting people to realize that the day is half over, etc.

Does that help clarify, or does it just make things more confusing?

I am a new member and I would like to try your thread. The idea of changing on the next visit is very interesting. Who changes what you become?

Technically, your subconscious does.

Or rather, your character's subconscious; but since your characters have absolutely no continuity from one Nod-day to the next, its really the players who decide how they will enter the arena on each new 'day'.

I personally find this really entrancing, as it means that players can basically fulfill every fantasy they've ever wanted to, thought about, considered, or even wondered on, in a fun, fantasy setting with other people who can happily enough interact back.

Now, this ISN'T to say that your daily excursions won't have a theme - mayhap your character will appear as a harem dancing girl one day and then a little french maid the next and so on and so forth as your 'subconscious' (but technically your desires) work you through each of the days and 'fantasy scenes' you encounter or wish to partake in each Nod-day.

Whew, I just keep rambling.

Again, I hope this is information that helps and illuminates, rather than confuse. However, please feel free to criticize, critique, or rant here - thats part of the threads purpose.

Also, I am working on getting the initial info for the first 'day' started; please note that while aside from some basic information the thread IS going to be free formed, but I will step in and GM if necessary.

IC: I am standing in the backyard of the house I grew up in. It is late summer... strangely the castle that I expected to see is three doors down. I am myself. Strangely 16 with a 37 year old perspective. I am a girl with waist length long hair, a pair of blue shorts and a burgundy t-shirt. I am husky with a 34B chest. I am not wearing shoes, but don't seem to care.
A woman I know as an adult, sitting on the sewer cap in the back of the yard crying. She is dressed all in white, a short sleeved cotton dress, plain and loose, and a pair of crocheted white shoes. I call her name. She looks up, smiles shyly at me. I begin to walk over.
The day is very warm, the sun right above me, but it has just rained, the grass is wet and there are places in the yard where there is water standing, it is warm water and it feels good on my bare feet as I walk over to her. The grass is tall and very dark green, there are yellow butterflies everywhere that fly up as I move through the grass. I can hear crickets and cicadas in the distance, and the rythmic snapping of the pennants on the castle walls.
I reach the woman. "I am lonely, and sad and just want to be loved and feel loved." she says to me without moving her lips. Her blue grey eyes rimmed with tears, but hopeful somehow. I reach out a hand and stroke her beautiful silver hair. It is soft as rabbit fur. She smiles and moves her face into my hand. I bend down and kiss her forehead, then her cheeks and then ever so gently her lips. She backs away for a moment, I pull her closer, "I can help you, let me help you. You are loved, you are loved. I can be that man." She looks strangely at me. "you are female, you cannot help me,"
she begins crying again, "Call me your lovers name and I can be that man".
She looks up at me again... "Its that easy?"
I brush the hair back from face, lean close into her and whisper in her ear, "Yes."

This sounds great. No limits to the imagination and possibilities. May have to start out with my Marc persona (the Norman warlord and his Amazon lover in a Romeo and Juliet-like situation, minus the part about having to rescue his son, of course). I actually had a daydream like this. Particularly the part where she convinces her fellow Amazons that he's not that bad once you get to "know" him.
