Discovery of gold on Bonanza Creek, a tributary of the Klondike River on 17 August 1896, by George and Kate Carmack and their Tagish First Nation friends Dawson Charlie and Skookum Jim, marked the beginning of what is often considered the world's greatest gold rush. The Klondike Gold Rush only lasted until 1899, but its legacy changed the Yukon forever.

"Neither law nor order prevailed, honest persons had no protection from the gang of rascals who plied their nefarious trade," wrote mounted police officer Sam Steele, describing the scene at the base of the treacherous Chilkoot Pass the following spring when over 100,000 men and women arrived in the Yukon. "Might was right; murder, robbery, and petty theft were common occurences."

Avalanches, drownings, typhoid, spinal meningitis and scurvy claimed many lives. Of the tens of thousands who actually made it to the Bonanza, only a handful found fortunes.

Fascination with the discovery of gold lives on in the imagination of every person possessing the spirit of adventure.

Join us in the fictional town of Carmack, located at the confluence of the Klondike and Yukon Rivers. With an influx of over 40,000 people a month, the "town" was more a city -- with an opera house, theaters and at its heart the building where most of our story will take place: a gambling house/saloon/hotel called the Aurora Borealis.

******

Looking for prospectors, Mounties (they moved into the Yukon Territory in 1894), gamblers, percentage girls, entrepreneurs (the mark-up was a 600% profit!). You name it and you can probably play it. ;)

We would like to see a nice combination of veteran writers and newcomers as well. No part is too large or too small. Please post your characters here for consideration.

There are, of course, some main characters in the play which have been claimed in advance. I will post a list of the players as they reveal themselves.

Thanks,

~Maid

THE PLAYERS:

Lou Service (Maid of Marvels): Owner of the Aurora Borealis, Lou also owns a sawmill and has six mining properties with sixteen men working each claim.

Tad Meriwether (Graybread): 18 year old run away farm boy from Pennsylvania. 6’ 1”, 220 lbs of lean muscle, and broad shoulders. Blue eyes, sandy blonde hair, and the beginnings of a beard. English descent.

Shy, keeping to himself most of the time. Not well educated, but only because he’s not had the chance. Intelligent and a quick learner. Will do anything to earn his way. Helped his father and two younger brothers work the farm, but longed for adventure. Managed to save up $5.00, packed all his belongings, ran away in the middle of the night, and headed for the Yukon.

Anna DeSilva (Messalina): Not suited to life as one of the 'girls', Miss Lou had been more than understanding and took Anna under her wing, offering a job as chambermaid. She had quickly proven her worth when the cook had fallen ill and now she ran the kitchen as well as overseeing the housekeeping and the staff Miss Lou employed 'behind the scenes'.

Tonsillitis Jones (Tonsillitis): A small person with an unusual tendency toward cleanliness, Tonsillitis has long, scraggly hair a hoarse voice. He comes into Carmack perty regular, and frequents the Aurora, but is never seen with any of Lou's "girls". Tonsillitis' claim is just upriver from Lars Linquist, a quiet Swede who never says or does much. He never takes credit or asks for it.

Eunice Cantrell (Jezebel_in_Hell): Age 23, a small demure widow of a Presbyterian minister. They were on their way to the Klondike to build a church and save the souls of the wicked. Her husband took sick just before reaching Carmack and was buried along the trail. Eunice still has hopes of building the church, she just needs a way to make the money. Wonder how she could do that?

She is small, less than 5 feet tall but with a well proportioned body. She wears black broadcloth and a white tatted collar that wraps tightly around her neck. No one but her husband has ever seen her ankles and that was quite by accident.

Crazy George (bullshot): 30 year old prospector, 5’ 10”, Dark Hair, Brown eyes. Crazy George has a claim up in the hills about two days out of town, nobody really knows where it is except for George. Although in actual fact his claim is a real mine he only ever brings into town fools gold in any real quantities, but he always seems to have enough fragments of real gold to purchase his supplies and spend a few days at the Aurora Borealis. The amount of fools gold he brings into town earned him the name of Crazy George as he claims its real. Every five or six weeks he appears in town with his mules saddle bags filled with fools gold, he stays for his few days then sets off for the hills again. He’s not really crazy but lets people think he is to protect his claim.

Lucian Keys (Mantra): Age: mid 30's, 5' 8" 170 lbs, Hair: jet black, Eyes: Green, wears wire rimmed glasses. Lucian came to the NW Territories in search of gold, but he is not a prospector but an entrepreneur. Understanding that only a fraction of people would actually find gold, but that everyone would need something to spend it on.

He currently owns the local grocery and hardware store in Carmack and in notably interested in buying up everything else he can find. Most notably, he also has a writ to sell with the Colt firearms manufacturing company.

Sgt. Alexander "Mac" McDonald (Blue Dolphin): of the Mounties. He is 42 years old, six foot tall, with blue eyes, and curly red hair. Originally from Scotland, Mac has been a Mountie for 8 years now, and is considered to be very experienced.

Seamus "Top" Macleary (Rufus_the_Mad): Age: 43, Bartender (Ex-Military). Bald with full and well kept black and silver mustache and brown eyes.

Eve Deschain (Mystical Avalon): Sold by her mother for a pint of whiskey and a roll in the hay, Eve is a quiet redheaded beauty with grey eyes. She has made her way from Arizona to Carmack. She wears a scar across her left arm from a brand placed by her first keeper. Knowing full well that her only means of survival among the miners and outlaws is a prostitue, she learns slowly the tricks of the trade. She longs for the romance of a true cowboy.

Frenchie Silverheels (Miss Behavin'): She was born Abigail Holbrook (shudder) but Frenchie sounds très chic, n'est pas?

Lusty, busty and très jolie, Frenchie left her past behind and created a whole new life for herself in the Yukon. Straight from Paris (Okay, Paris, Texas--but who's quibbling?), she's one of Miss Lou's best girls, stashing the cash while keeping herself in eau de cologne and designer dresses from Paree.

Claire Black (Sorren): Claire is a drifter in her late 20s, who has been making a living as a bounty hunter for over a decade, ever since her parents were brutally murdered. She's in Carmack because she has 'acquired' a land claim deed from her last mark. At this point, she hasn't decided yet whether to just sell the deed, or to maybe stay awhile.

James "Jedediah" Jackson (BigDonGStone): Born and raised on Lookout Mountain in Georgia, just outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee, he made his way cross country starting at the age of 14, trying a little bit of everything on both sides of the law; even ran with "Red Bill" Wheeler for a time in Montgomery, Texas. At 22 he hooked up with Phineas Cheney. Phineas had been a Regulator assigned to stop the banditti in Ogle County, Illinois.

He eventually worked his way north staking a goodly amount of money. Only problem was, he enjoyed the action too much. His reputation proceeded him into Canada. He worked for the NWMP for a period of time but found them to be too civil for his taste. Outlaws need to fear the law.

Constable Kenneth Stewart Fraser (OnHarry): Formerly Corporal Fraser but due to a slight disagreement, he was demoted to Constable, over some trifling matter.

He is not exceptional looking when viewed from a distance, as he is very well proportioned, and though well over six foot he doesn't look big until you stand beside him and realize he has arms and a chest like a gorilla. He has a clean shaven face that is somewhat square and a peculiar way about his mouth that makes him look like he is smirking.

Very few that have encountered him once wish for a repeat of the experience, however. Though he can be jovial on occasion, he is a by the book type, and a constant irritant to Lou as he is equally insistant on fulfilling his other duties that of customs and excise inspector, and revenue collector for the government.

And so we begin...

Tad Meriwether

Sweet, here we go again. This is the first real character I ever developed at Lit, so am looking forward to continuing with him.
Thanks for the restart Maid.
Looking forward to some newcomers as well!

I really don't know what I'm doing, my first time, etc.

Are there any set outlines for this world? May I create a character who was caught and enslaved by some evil nation and has run away to Bonanza Creek, hoping to make her fortune, or some such thing?

I'd appreciate any pointers.

Hey bg23, Maid and I are always willing to help and write with newcomers; although I see you have 35,575 posts. Does that qualify as a newcomer????

Anyway to tell you about this story; It set in real time, real world, not a fantsy world. You could make your character a dance hall girl/prostitute who has escaped a bad situation and come to Carmack to start a new life, perhaps make some money off the prospectors.

If you have any questions please feel free to post them here or pm either Maid or myself.

I'm a newcomer too, so If you don’t go to fast, I’d like to write in this also. I’m still working a lot of hours from hurricane Katrina. But if you don’t go to fast I think I could keep up.

Eunice Cantrell, age 23, a small demure widow of a Presbyterian minister. They were on their way to the Klondike to build a church and save the souls of the wicked. Welcome, Eunice - and Jezebel, too. ;)

There are lots of ways that Eunice could make money. It really was a great time for women financially.

Maybe she runs the local boarding house? Of course she would hold "meetings" there for those Godforsaken miners, etc.

And no, the thread won't be whiz bang posting, so you should be able to keep up. Looking forward to your contribution. :)

Elizabeth "Beth" Davies
Barely 18
5"5, 115lbs
Petite, but somewhat curvy (though she keeps them hidden)
Fair skin, lightly tanned and dusted with freckles. Long, chocolate brown hair and big, bright blue eyes

Recently orphaned, Beth moved to Carmack hoping to make a living. Unfortunatly, she has not had much success and has just resigned herself to becoming one of the famed "girls" of the Aurora Borealis. She is terrified and does not know what to expect, hoping only that someone there will take pity on her and show her around.

I cant wait to start, this story sounds fun!

Gray

a newcomer to your forum, yes. primarily, i post on the gb. i've never wandered over here before, my boy used to, and it's piqued my interest.

anyhow - i -still- don't know what i'm doing, so here's my proposal for a character. if it won't do, please tell me so i can correct her.

sarah lewis
21 years old. 5"2, 120 lbs. long dark brown hair, and interestingly light amber eyes.
sarah had previously been living with her brother in seattle, but when he was called away unexpectedly on business and then proceeded to disappear for many months with no trace of him yet to appear, was forced to learn to fend for herself. she found herself catching a ship and wandering down to Carmack to attempt to start a new life. she's hoping to be able to escape life as a prostitute, but so far other work doesn't seem forthcoming, and sarah wonders if she not might as well give up hope of doing anything else to survive.

Welcome, Sarah Lewis!

If I can do this, anyone can and you are well spoken/written enough to write circles around a lot of folks. I'm looking forward to the interchange of ideas.

Restarting this thread is a sort of personal "massage" for myself.

That said, I'd like to add that both Gray and I hope to see it go long term and we're looking for writers who aren't going to disappear in a couple of posts if they don't get enough sex or aren't willing to brainstorm a bit to help create what we hope will be a great story. Yes, I said the "S" word.

This doesn't mean NO sex, it just means that I'd like to see the focus on plot rather than boinking. And yes, you can have both and build a brilliant story thread.

For anyone who is unsure about writing a "period" piece such as this, I am more than willing to help out with links or whatever you might need.

Try it. You just might like it. :D

Eve Deschain

If this character is okey let me know please!!

Eve Deschain

Sold by her mother for a pint of whiskey and a roll in the hay, Eve is a quiet redheaded beauty with grey eyes. She has made her way from Arizona to Carmack. She wears a scar across her left arm from a brand placed by her first keeper. Knowing full well that her only means of survival among the miners and outlaws is a prostitue, she learns slowly the tricks of the trade. She longs for the romance of a true cowboy.

The rest of the details I can hopefully hash out as I go unless you want them now. Either way I can do what I need to do.

Sgt. Alexander "Mac" McDonald of the Mounties.
42 years old, six foot tall, with blue eys, and curly red hair.
Originally from Scotland, Mac has been a Mountie for 8 years now, and is considered to be very experienced.

That will suffice for now, until the story begins for real.

Just a head's up...

Basically we are located in the Northwest Territory of Canada. I'd venture to say that while there are fishermen and traders, trappers, entrepreneurs, indigenous people, miners, Mounties, etc. I don't think we'll be seeing any cowboys. It just wasn't "like that".

Still looking for women, and although it's easy to just create an easy peasy character such as a "percentage girl", I'd really like to see some ingenuity here. I know this is the SRP and that folks are here for different reasons, but we DO have some wonderful writers in this forum and I'd like to extend an invitation to those of you who would like to display some of your abilities, including creativity and imagination to come and play. ;)

Hey Let me in!

I'd love to join you guys, I will be developing a character soon and look forward to writing with some old friends and new ones also.

Bellyin' up!

Greetings one and all! Ran this by the rather fetching Maid of Marvels earlier, and she was kind enough to approve my recycling an old character for this wee adventure. Hope ye lot can smile fer a lad what ain't so fancy nor shiney! (And yes, he does speak like that so be prepared for a bit of deciphering! )

Name: Seamus "Top" Macleary
Age: 43
Gender: Male
Occupation: Bartender (Ex-Military)
Hair: Bald with full and well kept black and silver mustache
Eyes: Brown
Weapons: Seamus is hardly seen out from behind the bar. This is due mostly to the two 8-gage roomsweepers he keeps at either end of the bar. While working, he is never more than a step away from a solution to the problem. He is also an accomplished pugilist, and won several trophies and ribbons in his day. He also carries a large Bowie knife with him at all times. He can hurl the heavy blade with deadly accuracy, and has a target set on the far wall of the bar, just in case an example needs to be made.
Clothing: The iconic image of the wild-west barkeep, Seamus wears a white shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbows, a pair of black denim pants, and a leather vest complete with gold watch, chain and fob. He is also often seen with a damp bar towel slung over his shoulder.
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 235 lb

Physical description: Looking more like a moving stump than anything else, Seamus nevertheless moves with an easy grace, despite the rather pronounced limp on his right side. This limp is due to the wooden peg that became his closest companion after a freak explosion tore his leg off from the knee down.

His arms and torso are thick with powerful muscle, only just covered with a growing layer of fat, and his remaining leg looks as though it could kick through a barn door. He isn't tall, he isn't elegant, but he has a definitive effect on those that encounter him.

Despite his progressing age, and a penchant for the sweet cakes that one of the girls bakes occasionally, his waist and stomach are still relatively flat and slim. Where he was once "ripped", however, he is now subtly rounded and comfortable.

Background: Scottish through and through, Seamus still sports a delightful brogue despite the fact that he and his family arrived on these golden shores when he was but a wee lad. He grew up on the rough and tumble streets of New York, vowing almost daily to remove himself and his family from the hellish conditions that they were forced to endure.

His chance came one day when a recruiter walked through the area, offering $50 on the spot to anyone that signed up, with the promise of steady pay as he trained and served. That was all the desperate teenager needed to hear, and after giving the cash to his parents and signing the proper vouchers to guarantee that his pay would go directly to them, he joined the stomping rank and file of the U.S. Military.

He was given only rudimentary training at one of the poorly maintained and supervised Forts that the Army had hastily erected, and all too soon Seamus was thrust out into the thick of combat against an enemy he did not know, to fight for a cause he did not understand. The so-called “Civil War” was anything but, and in truth, the poorly trained troops might as well have been practicing to be targets for the angry, grey-clad denizens of that ever-changing landscape. He watched, year after year, as his friends were either killed or simply abandoned their posts, his own convictions and thoughts of his family keeping him locked into the meat grinder that had become his life. It wasn't entirely bad, however. He rose to the rank of First Sergeant during this time, making a great deal more money, and still answers to the convenient appellation of "Top".

By the time his parents at last settled in Kansas, he was more than ready to opt out of the service, and was only two days away from finishing his tour when an electrical storm swept across their position unexpectedly, throwing white-hot bolts of angry energy to the red earth around them, and striking the powder wagon with a furious wrath. The explosion killed ten men, and wounded close to forty others, including Seamus, who had saved the lives of three cadets by throwing himself between them and the blast.

Since that day he has dealt with the world one day at a time, and has drifted aimlessly for three years, learning the trade of Bartender out of necessity, taking his place behind the long wooden planking of one run-down booze pit after another, learning the hard way, and discovering that his former training and experience as a First Sergeant served him well, and he was able to both control the crowds, and focus his attention on what he was doing without missing much of either one.
