I submitted my first story nearly a year and a half ago. Voting had settled at 69 votes and a 3.88 score. Last week I submitted my second story. The first few votes were pretty good all of 5 votes and a score of 4.62. Math wise that means 4 folks voted 5 and one voted a 3 with a fair amount of slop for rounding I assumed.

A couple of days later I noticed my first story had received 2 additional votes and the score had jumped to 3.90. Some more math showed both new voters voted 5s. So story went for months and months without a single additional vote and suddenly it received two 5 star votes.

I almost have to assume some of those who read my second story decided to read and vote on my first one.

Has anyone else noticed carry over voting in a similar manor? I’m just curious.

Absolutely.

It only stands to reason that if someone finds and enjoys a story, they'll be prone to explore the rest of your list.

Having plenty for people to read and keeping up a reasonable amount of production are the key to building a readership on Lit.

That kind of thing happens all the time to me, and probably to others too. If a reader likes a story you have posted, that reader will probably look for other stories by you.

BTW: That second story could have received four votes of "5" and one of "3" or it could have received three votes of "5" and two of "4." The average score would be the same either way.

If you like carry over votes, try entering the theme contests. Valentines Day is the next one. There is a support thread up already here in the AH but be careful of the fake contest and the A.I.R. head that runs it.

Like TX said, themed contests are excellent ways to build readership and get more of those carry-over votes. Stories posted to the contests get top billing in the New list, and have a much longer "honeymoon" period due to the contest page staying up throughout the contest, where the New list only lasts seven days.

Eyes on your work is the name of the game, and themed contests are the best way to do that short of writing a wildly popular genre like werewolf/vampire or Mom/Son incest.

Just don't try a Mom/Son incest werewolf/vampire. :D

Damit, now I've gone and gave myself a plot bunny.

You can get away with it. There's one running right now, actually. You just lose large portions of both readerships. Those who are left will be wildly devoted followers, though.

I was joking to start with but now that i think about it....

It might be an interesting idea to write. So many possibilities and impossibilities for that matter.

But and there is always a butt. If it is already being done, maybe not.

Box, you are absolutely right about the my math error.

I attribute it to wishful thinking and not a terminal case of stoopid.

Thank you.

Mike
