Car Talk

Dear Car Goddess,

What should you do when someone tries to bribe you with a red sports car?

I am totally missing the car-lust gene.

All I want is a reliable car that's comfortable to sit in and drive, that doesn't fall apart at speed, that's small enough to park in busy, narrow UK streets, and that has room in the back for my dog and my shopping or luggage. I don't care what it looks like, I don't care what colour it is.....

I think there must be something wrong with me...

So, Netz, when do you take your MN driver's test? Will you be bribing the examiner with lutefisk, or maybe some hot dish?;)

Depends. Is this little red job a Porshe 911T? 928? Ferrari? '57TBird?

Or are we talking Miata, or maybe Toyota MR2, turbo, GT?, which are all nice, but not really true sports cars.

It doesn't matter. I'm not up for being "bought". My mom keeps trying though.

the adrenaline rush i get from speeding on a nice open highway... or on a not so open highway (lol) is one of the few things in life i truly do enjoy. scanning the road ahead, anticipating other drivers movements is like playing an intense game of chess.

Just what does your mom want? Maybe I'm up for sale!!

She wants me to figure out her and grands money situation, and put them living together with a caregiver in her home with an extension built or put them in assisted living together.

The problem being, they can't get along together and also can't get along with staff or fellow residents for long. I'm sure extracting yourself from such a place would be costly and difficult.

My solution, get a caretaker if they can afford it to see to their needs but keep separate residencies. That way when they get pissed off with the caretaker, they can get another one until they are pissed off with that one and so on.

BTW, they live in the same complex so it's not like providing food for both would be that much different for a caregiver. Unlike my mom, grand keeps her place spotless too. She just needs some help remembering her meds and eating.

My mom, OTOH, wants to be treated like a fucking princess, has no problem with paying people to do shit for her, oh except the money she pays them with is usually grands.

The car is one grand paid for too. Last year they both two new cars they just "had" to have with grands money. Foolishly they closed out an annuity, paying a penalty to pay for one, then mom had to pay gift tax. She called me to fix that one too but it was fucking late as usual.

The other one meant they had to close out a money mkt account, again paying a penalty. Today, the car mom "had" to have, she doesn't care for anymore. The car grand "had" to have, grand has stopped driving after a scare.

Are too. Admit it! We knew allllll along! :D

Okay, so Mister just bought me a 2003 Ford Focus POS. It's air compressor clutch was going out so we replaced that, no big. That was pretty much the only thing wrong with it (except that the back passenger window won't roll down, but that doesn't bother me.)

Well, during the replacing, Mister dropped a washer in the grass of our backyard and although we hunted with a flashlight for it, it vanished like a plate of cupcakes backstage at a fashion show.

Okay, we thought, not a big deal, carry on. Replaced the clutch and belt and everything sans washer.

Now, two days later we're driving back from Eufala and all of a sudden we hear a CLANK! under our car. Mister pulls over (I'm too pregnant to drive >_<; ) and the damn cover that goes over the belt is GONE. Poof, disappeared!

Well, without the cover we're afraid to drive the stupid car, because he thinks the belt might just...randomly fly off sometime while driving.

They don't sell the cover by itself at auto parts places. So, are we gonna have to spend another hundred bucks to get another air compressor clutch just to get the cover and washer?!

Okay well now that my cover is blown....

Rosco, petal - please stop talking about sexual intercourse on this computer thing. The ladies at my whist drive read it and talk about it and well, darling, I just find it very embarrassing.

Love you. Are you wearing clean underwear?

Very likely it is safe to drive. The cover is most likely not a retainer. It is probably a cover to keep the belt safe. Yes, getting a new one would be a good idea, but short trips should probably not be a problem.

The big thing to do is hit a junkyard. If you have something akin to a Pic-n-Pull that would be a great choice. Their parts are dead cheap, you just go out on the lot and pull the part yourself.

Me too!! :D

As an aside, you can probably contact the Ford dealership local to you and ask the parts dept for the specs on that washer. You may be able to get a workable substitute for literally pennies at a Lowes or something similar.
