As usual I can't enter the the latest contest; Earth Day, because I started too late and my process takes months to get to the point that I can sit and type for long enough to finish. When I do finish in time (hours before the deadline) I've written too fast for my fly-editing to kick in, so (as in the last contest) my submission is not as it should be.

So the question is: If and/or when I do finish the story, do I save it 'til next year and the chance for winning the lolly? or do I submit before and hope for inclusion in the monthly/yearly contest?

Actually the money and contest winning are not important so forget that.

Given that I still get excited and anxious when I post a new story, just to see it there in the new list I can't see myself sitting on a finished product for a year.

Do I save the themed story for next year or just submit it when done?

What do you do?

Go ahead and submit it - then get started on writing something even better for next year's contest?

Gauch,

If any of your characters spend any time running around buck-ass nekkid, save it for the Nude Day contest. If that's a non-starter, go ahead and make it a regular submission. That way the rest of us will have a much better chance in the contests.

Hey, that's a great idea. The same thing happened to me, but my story happens to be really environmentally themed with not so much nude frolicking. So, I'll opt for the save it for next year and make it shine option on mine.

Either way, Gauche, you should absolutely finish the story and submit it at some point.

ETA: Oops, I meant to post as Scarlett.

I have saved entries for next year and adapted stories for a subsequent competition.

For example I started 'Earthy Fifties' for the 2005 Earth Day contest but became stuck after the first two fifty-word stories, now discarded.

'Recycled Mummy' was intended for the last Halloween Contest before I recycled the story for the 2006 Earth Day.

'Candice' was an episode in my 'Silverbridge Chronicles' but I used it for Valentine's Day.

I started a story for this year's Earth Day contest but it is stalled. I will work on it over the next year and I hope to finish it for the 2007 contest, or not...

You're not alone GC. My Xmas story was half done when I lost my internet connection 3rd December, didn't get it back until after Xmas. Seeing as it was about Santa and his little helpers, I'd rather struggle to fit it into any other theme, unless he went down with Alzheimers and trid to do his deliveries in the middle of Summer.

Never did finish it, but at least I've got a starter for next Xmas. :)
