I used to be able to go into a section and see an icon to go to the new posts since my last visit. Is that option completely gone now?

It's still there, in the top right corner of the thread. The little button labeled "New."
In addition, you should now get alerts on any threads you subscribe or post to. Next to your name on the upper right corner of the screen, there is a little bell icon
. You should have notifications there when new posts are added to your subscription threads, and you can click there to immediately jump to those posts within the thread itself.
