Canada strategically realigning

I did, and I quoted the part where you stated that Canada was not a major economic player. You can all play the what-if game all you want, but your statement was inaccurate
I noted that GDP is the standard measure used to track and compare economic output among countries and states, and I noted that if Canada were a US state, its per capita GDP would be dead last. The context and point being that Mr. Carney’s vague notion of “strategic realignment” is quantitatively and qualitatively relatively insignificant, despite Chloe’s enthusiastic thread.

To your point that Canada is member of the G7: It’s true. And Canada’s GDP ranks dead last in that group. Their GDP is about 1/13th of the #1 member and dominate power.

The global super power club is very small, and the power comes from economic and military strength. Canada is not one of those countries.

It depends on the US, economically and militarily. Without the US market and supply chain, the country dies. Full stop. (Apologies to Chloe.)

If Carney wants to align more closely with Europe, the smartest thing he can do is step Canada’s share of NATO defense spending as a percentage of GDP. To his credit, he’s pledged to do that. That benefits the Canadians, the US and the NATO allies in Europe.

A G7 country isnt a major economic player?

Merely being a member of the G7 doesn't automatically confer "major player" status. That you think is does is why you're illiterate when it comes to economics.

Economics is all about, and nothing but, money. Canada's per capita GDP lags behind EVERY State in the US. Basically, you can say Canada's economic power flat out sucks because the entirety of Canada can't even compete with the tiniest US State, Rhode Island.

Economy Size (Total GDP)
    • Canada: ~$2.4 trillion to $2.6 trillion USD (national economy).
    • Rhode Island: ~$77 billion to $82.5 billion USD (state economy).

And yet Canada comes in dead last when it's GDP is compared to every US state.

Which leads me to believe your numbers are fudged.

As I thought, your numbers are bullshit.

Per Luna 5.6:

Using the latest fully comparable annual figures (2024 nominal GDP per capita in current U.S. dollars), Canada would rank 50th among the 50 U.S. states—higher than only Mississippi. If Canada is added to the state ranking, it places 50th out of 51 economies. Wikipedia

Those ranks include other countries in the source’s combined international comparison. Looking only at the 50 states plus Canada:

  • 50th: Canada — $54,283
  • 51st: Mississippi — $53,061
Canada’s per-capita GDP was about 2.3% higher than Mississippi’s, but substantially below every other U.S. state in the 2024 comparison. These figures measure economic output per resident, not average income or household living standards.

On a per capita basis, which levels the playing field among entities of different sizes, Canada only beats Mississippi, the POOREST state in the US.

Suggesting Canada is a small economic player based on some misleading "Per Capita GDP" comparison with individual states in the U.S. is the ULTIMATE attempt at GASLIGHTING.

Canada is THE NINTH LARGEST ECONOMY IN THE WORLD.

Canada’s total GDP of 2.7 TRILLION would rank it behind only CA, NY, and TX.

For comparison, poor states, like Alabama, Mississippi, etc, have total GDPs of around 77 billion.

2.7 TRILLION is a fuckton > 77 billion.

The GASLIGHTING POS PB MAGAts have FAILED in ANOTHER GASLIGHTING attempt; full stop.

Hope that ^ helps.

You can leave out the 'in economics'.

I think she's looking at it as her hail mary based on the referendum in a few weeks

If ( by some miraculous miracle) the separatists win, she can say " Look, see what I'm doing for an independent Alberta"

If it fails ( very much more than likely) she can say " Look, see what I'm doing for Canada"

Per capita? Dude, that's some serious weak sauce cherry picking moving the goalpost bullshit. Just acknowledge you dont know anything about your northern neighbor and lets all move on

I have reservationas about that as he has thus far not entailed exactly what being an "associate member" entails.
Similar to an unpaid internship. Show how you can add value. Hope for the real job offer. If Carney can sell Canadians on handing over some degree of sovereignty to Brussels, Canada could become as relevant as Italy.

I'm not opposed to a trade agreement, but any surrender of our sovereignty is a no go for me. I'd prefer Canada first goes for the CANZUK alliance. Not that CANZUK will fix all our trade woes, but it will give us greater negotiating power with the EU if we are negotiating as a alliance than as separate nations.

I’m not Canadian but suspect most of your fellow citizens agree with you on the sovereignty issue.

if that happened then would happen to the royal family and the british style upper class rankings like dukes dutchs sirs madams
Obviously the US would have to amend the Constitution to bring back a member of the Royal Family as official head of state, brimging a much more dignified appearance to US politics. Makes sense really - the President is actually more of a monarch but with far more powers than any British monarch in the last few hundred years.

And we could get some attractive ceremonial uniforms and do military parades much better...

The first pinky toe dip into the new partnership

https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-and-canada-to-announce-sweeping-new-partnership-pact/

BRUSSELS — The EU and Canada will use a landmark summit next month to announce an expansive new partnership, ranging from breaking down digital trade barriers to joint support for Ukraine and investing in fighting wildfires.

"The world is rapidly changing with unprecedented geopolitical challenges as well as challenges across trade, energy, technology, climate, and resources," reads a draft joint statement to be issued by the two sides, circulated to EU ambassadors in preparation for the planned summit that begins on Oct. 29, and obtained by POLITICO.

The EU and Canada have been seeking to shore up their strategic ties as they grapple with the fallout from U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this month proposed inviting Canada to become an associate member of the EU, triggering an immediate threat by Trump to impose tariffs.

"Canada and the EU, with our unparalleled trade access, shared values, and complementary economic strengths, can build a deeper and more integrated relationship," the draft paper says.

The two sides plan to say at their summit in Montreal that they want to speed up investment in critical mineral projects, strengthen supply chains, and improve supply security, including by stockpiling critical resources to mitigate “market fluctuations and geopolitical impacts.”

"We will align strategies and standards, connect industries, and focus our ambitions on sectors with greatest returns for our peoples. This includes the development of low-carbon, reliable energy that much of the world is hungry for, from liquified natural gas to hydro, solar, wind, and nuclear."

Ottawa and Brussels will also announce the joint purchase of 50 De Havilland water bombers, to be ready for use in Canada and Europe in 2030 to fight wildfires.

“We are joining forces voluntarily … We will create a tech alliance. We will integrate defense industrial bases. We will make the Arctic a flagship joint project. We will work on energy, critical minerals and batteries. On AI, quantum, cyber and economic security,” von der Leyen said in her State of the Union speech on Sept. 15.

Holy shit. Not even the Nazis looked that ridiculous. The Brits really go all out on looking like chocolate teapots.

You'll positively hate the Edinburgh Tattoo then.

And yes. One of the Drum Majors is a Sikh. And the small Asian man is a Ghurka.

The songs played are Black Bear and Scotland The Brave.

And as I pointed out, GDP per capita in isolation is pretty meaningless. Canada's GDP per capita is four times that of China. Are you going to argue that Canada is four times the economic powerhouse of China?

There are times when measuring on a per capita basis makes sense. Using it to compare to the relative global economic impact of a country isn't one of those.

Canada's GDP per capita is four times that of China. Do you believe Canada's global economic influence is four times that of China?
