So how funny would it be if this guy were a closet-liberal...

It's like impossible and this is probably just to throw us off the scent... but come on, I'd just about pee my pants if he went, "4-L, mothafuckas! 4-L!"

Sincerely,
ElSol

This case is pretty terrible. In Missouri, a 15-year-old girl was waiting outside her home for the school bus. She was abducted by two men who dragged her into the car. They raped her and then stabbed her repeatedly with steak knives before tossing her body in the trunk of the car they'd stolen for the occasion.

Police found the abandoned stolen car the next day and the owner of the car found her body in the trunk. I still remember seeing the pictures on the news of her books, flute and purse in a little pile on the sidewalk in front of her house. Still makes me sad.

They have the men cold - DNA samples from semen, pubic hair, fingerprints - witnesses who saw the Monte Carlo drive away - and also solid confessions from both men in which they each insist the other person was the instigator.

And THIS execution is halted?

:(

I'd rather feel a slithering anaconda than a quivering neocon. Eww!

What Do Neocons have to do with the Supreme Court?

I fail to see what neocons have to do with the Supreme Court. As I understand it a neocon is someone who used to be liberal but has become a "new" conservative but only in the area of the role of the US in world affairs. Neocon is not a synonym for...oh forget it! The term just doesn't apply here.

If you took the time to review his record or listen to his statements in the confirmation hearings, Alito's position on dealth penaty stays has been remarkably consistent. He has always tended to err on the side of caution and grant the initial stay so his vote here is in character. He takes the death penalty very seriously and wants to be certain that all of the legal bases have been covered.

MSNBC didn't bother to mention his stated position on death penalty stays during the hearings and is trying to make news where it probably doesn't exist.

I would predict that the murderer here will ultimately get sizzled but it will just take a few more days.

Possibly I am losing my mind, but I can't seem to quite work out from the stories why the case Alito ruled on was blocked. Can anyone see this more clearly than I?

Oops. Posted to the wrong thread. Why are these drug flashbacks so much more disturbing than the highs used to be?

Senate Votes 52-48 To Redeem Coupons

A bitterly partisan battle ended yesterday when the U.S. Senate passed the controversial McCain-Chafee Coupon Redemption Act. The first coupon will be redeemed at Hooters for one free appetizer-sized portion of Spicy Buffalo-Style Chicken Wings with the purchase of a pitcher of domestic beer. The value of the coupon could not be confirmed by press time. Funding for the pitcher of beer was provided for in an addendum to the Healthy Forest Restoration Act which was signed into law in 2003.

An earlier coupon, the hotly debated 2 Cans of Beanie Weinies for the Price of 1, expires at midnight Saturday, and will be invalid before President Bush can sign the McCain-Chafee Act into law. The coupon had an estimated retail value of 33 cents, based on the average price of a 6 oz. can of Beanie Weinies at twelve randomly audited supermarkets.

Ah, thank you, Shereads. That clarifies the matter nicely.

WTF are you talking about?! I didn't do anything. I wasn't even here.

I still worry a great deal about what kind of Supreme Court Justice Alito will be in the future. I fear that his impact will still be mostly to uphold the government at the expense of the individual.

Bizarrely, I saw your coupon post before I wrote the note that is now posted above it.

Methinks the elves are playing about with the code this evening.

Bizarrely, I deleted that post and wrote over it with the post that is now under it. Or over it. I don't know.
