I have a story currently posted in the first time category, but I'm thinking it might be received better in a different one. Can I switch it somehow or can I resubmit it in a different catetegory?

You can resubmit an edited version into the new category.

simply resubmit the story and after the title type the word edit. Then in the notes box type in that this is an edited version.

This will be treated like a new submission and will take 3-5 days to replace the current one. all votes and comments from the current one will stay with the new one.

Thing is though I don't think it will show up in the New story listings so don;t know how much exposure it will get.

With respect to categories, if you chose the category the first time, there's a fair-good chance that a request for a category change will be honored.

If Lit changed the category to something else at posting time, you're going to have to give a damn good reason for why you want it changed in the "notes" section.

If edited, only what you request to be changed ( category in this case ) will be changed. All votes, views, comments, etc. will remain, but the story won't appear in the New List.

That probably won't change the exposure of the story much, though.

If you choose, you can delete the submission ( same basic process as editing, except you put *DELETE* in the title line instead of *EDIT* and explain that you're deleting in the "notes" section ) and resubmit to the new category after the original vanishes from your list.

A word of warning on this: Some people may bomb you with low votes and leave nasty commentary if they recognize the story and you don't put a note in there saying that it's a repost, and why.

If you delete and then submit a second time, all previous stats are gone, but the story appears in the New List again.

Neither solution is really all that good, unless you're just getting horribly blasted in the current category. They both have drawbacks.

The exception might be if you're about to release new stories in the category you're changing the old story to. Readers tend to gravitate toward your older stories in the same category if they enjoy something new.

I don't think that simply submitting an edit is going to get your category changed. The editor reserves the right to assign category. I'd had them changed before, but I had to PM Laurel direct to get it done--and, as Dark said, give a good reason for the change.

If you chose the category the first time, and can say why you want to change it, it usually happens.

It's only when Lit changed it from your first choice that you have an uphill battle.

At least, that's what I've always heard reported. I've never had a need to change a category myself.

I have changed a category several times after Lit. has posted it as what I thought was wrong. If you have a good reason, there shouldn't be much problem.

First Time is a pretty good category, by the way. It's probably about third or fourth in reads and tends to attract positive comments. :)
