IS THERE SOMEONE OUT THERE WHO WILL TAKE UP THIS FIGHT?

The Republicans darned sure won’t. OK, we’re talking about Social Security here, the second greatest fraud ever to be pushed over onto the American public.

The White House commission on Social Security reform is releasing its proposals. That’s about as far as it will go. Democratic officials quickly denounced the reform ideas and the Republicans fell silent. They just don’t have the guts to tackle the issue.

There are three key reasons why Republicans feel they can’t take on the issue of Social Security reform.

1. The hideous economic illiteracy of the American public.

2. The glaze that forms over younger American’s eyes when they hear the words “Social Security.” After all, that’s about old people, isn’t it?

3. The eagerness with which wizened citizens accept every lie the Democrats throw at them about attempts to reform the system.

This is supposed to be a free country, right? Well – if we are indeed supposed to be free could one of you please tell me just why in the world the government should be allowed to use deadly force to take about 15% of every penny we earn and put that money into a hideously flawed so-called “retirement plan” that will produce a negative rate of return over the average American’s 45-year work life?

You do know, don’t you, that you have absolutely no legal right to that money the government takes away from you in the form of Social Security taxes. None. The congress of the United States can wait until the day before you are supposed to get your first Social Security check and then pass a law saying that you get NOTHING. They can end the program, keep your money, and there isn’t a damned thing you can do about it. Or … the government can wait until you reach the eligibility age --- and then change the rules to make you wait a few more years!

Social Security takes money away from the people who are earning it right now, and gives that money to people who are not longer working. With every passing day there are fewer people working and paying Social Security taxes, and more people not working and collecting Social Security benefits? Hell, you can be a graduate of a government school and still understand where that’s going!

Social Security is nothing but a glorified vote-buying scheme. The Democrats know that old folks vote --- and they voter their pocketbooks. In every single federal election , without exception, the Democrats will charge that the Republicans want to “take your Social Security benefits away.” And in every single election, without exception, the blue hairs will troop off to the polls to defeat those evil Republicans who want to take food off their tables and the roofs from over their heads.

So --- the Republicans won’t touch it. The reform commission findings will be put in a box on a shelf. The Republicans won’t touch it because they know that the American people --- the products of our wonderful government schools --- simply aren’t educated enough – bright enough – to understand the issue.

Because there are rumblings of the same happening in canada, if i can fully see how it works for the states I can brace myself for the inevitibility of it happening here.

Everything big Brother America Does, little brother \canada soon goes to do afterward. Prime Minister Johhny Crapping Himself has done everything his hero Billy Boy Clintonista did in his tenure in office.

Frankly, knowing that it is so close to happening there, it means its going to happen within 3-5 years here.

That is if Canada doesn't get absorbed before then and speeds the process up.

Todd thanks for the reply, it helps me understand where you are coming from on your viewpoint.....:)

Your more than welcome.

American politics to me are like a prophetic glimpse into the near future of Canadian politics.

Canadain politicians simply copy from the americans whatever they see that works or that american politicians can get away with.

There is no fight to take up, Todd......

You are hideously right about the whole thing. However, it is not surprising to me that the government is allowed to do this in the USA. No one seems to remember or understand that Senators, Congressmen, and the President are public servants......they work for ME. Even THEY don't seem to remember that. The American way of life is fantastic compared to that of other nations; but it is seriously flawed in the form of an overwhelmingly huge government that cares absolutely nothing for the voters which elected it. We have the best elected officials that money can buy.

Yes, the Social Security system in the USA is in severe trouble. I do not count on it being there when I reach retirement age. Therefore, I have made other financial arraingements for when that time comes. Yes, it is sad that the government is taking 15% of my salary, of which I will most likely never receive a cent when I reach retirement age. But no more sad than the 25% that they take in federal income tax which is wasted and squandered.

I share you opinion, Todd. Any creative suggestions on how to remedy the situation?

First, Neil Boortz has been spouting whatever sells radio airtime for longer than many know. He has been on the radio for years throwing out drivel. In his AM WRNG radio days, he would tell of UFO sightings or Communist plots to take over the CIA just to get listeners calling. His opinions are whatever is controversial enough to get listeners whipped into a frenzy and calling.

Social Security is in deep trouble, this is true. But you can not blame that on a particular political party. It is the fault of all Americans who have blithely turned over to our leaders all control, so long as we do not have to be bothered with knowing the facts ourselves. We have sat silent while our statesmen became politicians. We swallowed whole the theory of supply-side economics without a grimace. We allow corporations, through huge donations to the political machines, to determine who is our president and what his agendas will be. One giant step in the right direction would be for every man and woman of legal voting age to actually find out what is going on and to decide in their heart what is right and what is wrong. Get out and vote and stop letting some politician tell you what to believe or what to think.

Social Security has been allowed to be plundered during the Reagan years to reduce the apparent size of the huge deficits. Funding that should have been under lock and key for our precious seniors, who have worked all their lives for their reward, has been used to fund the B-1 bomber and to dig out the Iowa class battleships which should have remained retired. It has taken GW a mere 8 months to open the lockbox and raid the funds once more, to cover the deficit that was created before the attacks on the WTC and Pentagon. The less than judicious decision to refund tax money created gaps that had to be filled from some source.

If Canada mimics the US in so many ways, why are our social policies so very different? I am just curious. I've a number of business acquaintances from Canada and they have a very different point of view. It would seem that Canada would be quickly about the business of dwindling the number of government employees and paring back social programs if they wish to mimic us.

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, I am a true blue American girl. I was raised to respect the flag and patriotism. I would want no other home and have never had an urge to roam outside our golden shores. But, I was also taught that this is the land of the free and we can say what we think and what we feel. And we must do so to keep it free.

Argh. I was going to post a reasoned and long response to this, but I just can't. The numbers are there for the reading., This just isn't the truth, and it never has been.

Interesting thing about numbers...

Figures can be used to fortify any position. Historical record still stands.

We've had this system for about 50 years. Here it's called National Insurance. When you turn 16 you are give a National Insurance number and told that by contributing (non-voluntarily) you are saving for your own state pension.

But that money pays for todays pensions. And the British government is currently trying to phase out state pensions, but not National Insurance.

I personally do not mind having state pensions based on taxes, but I wish that they would not pretend that the money you pay will be used to support you in your old age. It's the lie I dislike.
