By now I suspect everyone’s heard of U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano’s gaffe Monday when she perpetuated the oft-repeated yet completely incorrect notion that 9/11 terrorists entered the U.S. from Canada. This story has been repeated so often that apparently our embassy there has a chart of incidents and issues a stock refutation to the media every time it happens.
What made the incident especially newsworthy this time may just be that it happened in the post-Bush era – and the fact that it came from someone who really, really should have known better.
Among those who have had their hands slapped for repeated this story are Sen. Conrad Burns, Newt Gingrich, then Sen. Hillary Clinton, and Rep. Ruben Hinojosa, who claimed that “as we all know, terrorists entered the U.S. from Canada on Sept. 11, 2001, using passports that the Canadians accepted as valid despite the fact that the documents were doctored.”
Let’s hope this is the last time the Canadian Embassy has to send out that press release.

I remember the rumors being that there were members of Al-Qaida, who knew about the attack, on roof tops in New Jersey watching the whole thing go down. They cheered. Or so it was said... It was also said that the face of the devil showed up in the smoke... I'm sure Ben Carson believes that one.

Trump is depending on Right Wing Extremists (some of these Right Wing crazies are Neo Nazi enthusiasts!) for information that he needs. It is possible that one of his fans experienced a hallucination, and reported it as a real, meat world experience.
The Extremist Right Wing has been caught using film footage appropriated from unrelated events, to attempt to prove their racist and bigoted points. It is possible for Trump to have watched a video clip, online, and "mis- remembered" where he saw the video clip of "thousands and thousands" of Islamic people cheering.

In fact, when he was questioned by ABC News today about his assertion that "thousands and thousands of people" cheered the collapse of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 just across the river in New Jersey, Trump doubled down.
"It did happen. I saw it. It was on television. I saw it," Trump said.

We asked our library to look through contemporaneous news reports. They tell us that that they could not turn up any news accounts of American Muslims cheering or celebrating in the wake of Sept. 11.
A 2007 piece from Reuters about Paterson, New Jersey, does address the celebrations but it concludes that they never happened. Reuters reports:
"Paterson was shaken by the September 11 attacks. On that day, a report circulated on some radio stations and Internet sites that Muslims in Paterson had demonstrated in celebration.
"Paterson officials promptly issued a statement denying the report, and Muslim leaders insist it was pure fabrication."
