Can music define you?

If so, then what music? Do you have a signature song for your personality and or for your life? What would be the soundtrack to your life if you had to choose say 10 songs or less or more. What does each song mean to you and why. Do you relate certain songs to certain events and people in your life?

Talk about it.

I don't know if "define" is the right word, but music definitely affects me/reflects who I am. The songs vary depending on where I am in my life, etc. At the moment, my ten songs....(that's hard)-

In my Life- the Beatles (this is always one of my songs)
The Blower's Daughter- Damien Rice (it profoundly touches me, but more than that, it's a song about a love I want to experience)
Leaving on a Jet Plane- Ani Difranco
I've got to see you Again- Norah Jones
Breathe (2 am) Anna Nalick
I love Myself- Bif Naked (on my good days)
Michelle- the Beatles (another ongoing song)
Obvious Child- Paul Simon

I can't think of anymore. I'm still half asleep!

Ten "defining" songs, eh? Okay, I'll give it a shot ... but it's fluid:
  1. Absence of Fear (Jewel)
  2. Forever Love (Anna Nalick)
  3. Blood & Fire (Indigo Girls)
  4. Angels Would Fall (Melissa Etheridge)
  5. Music of the Night (Streisand/Crawford from Phantom)
  6. Free In You (Indigo Girls)
  7. You Gotta Be (Des'ree)
  8. You're My Home (Billy Joel)
  9. Sleep (Melissa Etheridge)
  10. Somewhere (from West Side Story)

There are no defining songs or pieces of music. Music just is part of my life. There is no time when its not there.

There are far too many pieces - classical, oratorio, opera, heavy rock, pop, folk, jazz, romantic ballads. The piece chosen depends entirely upon my mood at the time.

Some pieces evoke memories - pleasant and painful.
Some echo my mood.

They just are.

I can never see that title, or hear that song, without thinking of P.J. Proby, who was on the pop scene back in the late 60s. I was besotted with him, but have no idea why. He couldn't sing worth a listen. And was most famous for the fact that the crotch seam of his leather pants split during a performance.

He wore different clothes, very regency and romantic - and very tight pants, and his hair in a pony tail. Nothing outrageous now, but then.........*sigh*

Sorry F-V, hijack over. Just reminiscing.

Alrighty, here goes:

1. "Basketcase" -- Green Day (This is my theme song.)
2. "Mr. Jones" -- Counting Crows (This song confesses more about me than I want to admit. I hope that makes sense.)
3. "Time in a Bottle" -- Jim Croce (This is "our song" -- mine and the SO's.)
4. "Wake Me Up When September Ends" -- Green Day (This song reminds me of one of the most important days in my life.)
5. "Nothing Else Matters" -- Metallica (This song reminds me of one of the saddest days of my life and of someone who is no longer here.)
6. "Runaway Train" -- Soul Asylum (This was the theme song of my teenage years.)
7. "Country Sunset" -- My Dad (This was a song my dad wrote and he used to sing it to me when I was a little girl. Now, I have it on CD and I listen to it when I miss home.)
8. "In the End" -- Linkin Park (I relate to this song on soo many levels.)
9. "Coconut" -- Larry Nilsson (This song reminds me of my best friend.)
10. "Working Class Hero" -- John Lennon (I relate to this song a great deal and I first heard it at a time in my life where this song really took what I was feeling inside and ripped it out of me.)

There ya' go. :)

I don't know that music defines me, but there are some songs that stick out in my mind as having more of an impact than others.

  • Hands - Jewel
  • All I Really Want - Alanis Morrissette
  • Loser - 3 Doors Down
  • Long View - Green Day
  • Cornflake Girl - Tori Amos
  • Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve

:D Ummm, ten. That is tough.

Today's ten ... because (agreeing with everyone else) I'd come up with a slightly different list tomorrow :D

1. Angel of the Morning (The Pretenders).
I adore this song. It sums up my take on love affairs. This one would always be on the list LOL

2. Fuck Forever (Babyshambles)
Angry, chaotic and rebellious lyrics from an angry, chaotic and rebellious group. It appeals to that part of me that has never matured and still likes to stick two fingers up to the establishment.

3. In the dark - Norah Jones / Jools Holland
It reminds me of a dark night, slow dancing by candlelight with the sexiest man I've ever met.

4. Picture This - Blondie
One of my fav's - punky confidence.

5. Gotta Get Thru This - Daniel Bedingfield
Played this constantly when splitting up from a long term partner. I can now listen to it without crying ... big achievement I can assure you. I remember this being played in a shopping mall and I burst into tears much to my shopping buddy's horror

6. That's What I think - Cyndi Lauper
I adore this song. Makes me think about summer, freedom, love and how love can change your whole outlook on life. It's a song I keep in the back of my mind on rainy, UK days - it always cheers me up, makes me stand up straighter and walk taller.

7. Ladder in my tights - Amy Studt
The moment I heard this song I recognised myself ;) Play loud and jump on the sofa, guaranteed to dissolve even the bluest mood (I promise ).

8. You're Beautiful - James Blunt
It's a beautiful song and talks to me personally about those missed opportunities.

9. Right to be wrong - Betty Wright
This song reminds me that I'm the only person that should be making choices for me!

10. She's a Rebel - Green Day
(My JD & Coke song) Which is normally played late at night extremely loud, just because I can!

:D

Music had been a part of my life since I was four years old
I am not sure about defining me, but these songs have always carried strong emotion or meaning. Sorry, could not stay confined to strictly 10 songs.

“New York State Of Mind” – Billy Joel
“Wander This World” – Jonny Lang
“Whippin’ Post” – Allman Brothers Band
“Drift Away” – Dobie Gray
“Ballet For A Girl From Buchanan” – Chicago
“Handbags and Gladrags” – Rod Stewart
“Them Changes” – Buddy Miles
“Layla” – Derek And the Dominos

Not a song; but the entire “Yellow Brick Road” Album – Elton John
And the entire “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” album – Neil Young & Crazy Horse

You know, Mat, I think you've perfectly described why music is such a part of us.

It's our history, our memories, our loves and our losses.

It's everything.

Can anything bring back thoughts of past personal events better than hearing the same music that you heard at that time?

I have memories of the music involved from all my major life-changing events.

I cannot choose only ten.

Exactly. I remember listening to the first Beatles' hit, 'Love Me Do', and wondering what all the fuss was about, why all the girls in my high school class were swooning over these guys. I never really got into them until I had a copy of their Please Please Me Album....and was completely bowled over by 'Anna', and 'Twist and Shout' (both sung by John Lennon, I think I always preferred him to the others - more character.). That album is still one of my all time favourites, and Twist and Shout is always played at the highest volume I possibly can.....along with me air guitaring. :D :D :D

Ah, memories.

Hmmm...ten song or less. I will try to keep it to ten but I have so many as my life as been so long...in no particular order in my life.

1. Shut Down - The Beach Boys
2. In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins
3. Eye In The Sky - The Alan Parsons Project
4. Kokomo - The Beach Boys
5. Kentucky Woman - Deep Purple
6. Layla - Eric Clapton (the unpluged version)
7. The Brazilian - Genesis
8. Look Through Any Window - The Hollies
9. Walk Away - The James Gang
10. Lightening Strikes - Lou Christie
10a. Devil With the Blue Dress - Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels
10b. Just a Little - The Beau Brummels

I could go on for at least 24 more 10's...

Each song is associated with an event in my life, a moment in time that was either sad or happy or a time which I was deep in thought and the music helped me through a rough time. After 57 years, 50 of which I truely remember, it's hard to distill down to 10 songs.

There is one new song which defines a recent event in my life, one which I am listening to right now. The singer has a fabulous voice.

Swing Life Away - Cat (Just Cat for now)

Those who know the song will know the artist. It defines new friends and family. Enough said. :cathappy:

heres my ten er 13

Aerosmith : Blind Man (reminds me of where ive been)

Clutch : space grass (long gallactic highways here)

Rolling Stones : 2000 man (I kinda grew up)

Hank Williams Jr : Family Traditions (blood is thicker than water)

Mathew Sweet : Girlfriend (my feel good song)

Meatloaf : Two out of three aint bad (ever love someone you dont connect with?)

Radiohead : Creep (this song strikes a chord)

Tommy Roe : Dizzy (you know its real when love makes you dizzy)

Velvet Revolver: Fall to peaces (great song, reminds me of my 20s)

Tesla : Heavens Trail (Bad ass rythem makes you feel like kicking ass)

Sound Garden : Rusty Cage (all about gettin off the chain)

Skid Row : youth gone wild (again " off the chains")

Santana : Evil Ways (my Dad used to play keyboard, and I loved it when they did this song)

I think music can define a moment but maybe not a life...

1. Swimming In Your Ocean (Crash Test Dummies)
2. I Would Be Your Man (Odds)
3. Firefly (Tori Amos)
4. Sleep (Dandy Warhols)
5. Nothing To Believe In (Cracker)
6. Ever The Same (Rob Thomas)
7. Feel You Closer (Skydiggers)
8. Lost Together (Blue Rodeo)
These all remind me of her

9. When The Night Feels My Song (Bedouin SoundClash)
10. Today I Hate Everyone (Killjoys)
And these two just remind me of me

Billy Joel: She's Got A Way (My father used to sing it to me when i was a little girl)

Sinead O'Connor: Nothing Compares to you (Arguably the most beautiful song ever written about still loving someone after a break-up)

Depeche Mode: Somebody (It defines what I have always yearned for in a life partner)

Tori Amos: Silent All These Years ( How i always feel when I choose to be silent and not fight back)

Rufus Wainwright & Dido: I eat dinner (I adore the way it resembles how we just continue with the mundane tasks in life when a tragedy happens. We go on, but everything looses meaning.)

Leeanne Womack:I hope you dance ( It is what I wish my daughter - was a hit just about when I fell pregnant with her. )

Evanescense – my immortal: (I dedicated this to my First love who died of Leukemia 3 years ago. She will always be my immortal)

Jools Holland & Sam Brown: Valentine Moon: (Is what I wish for my Goddess and I)

Jeff Buckley: Hallelujah (beautiful beautiful song)

Jewel: Standing still (this was me at a stage in my life)

Sarah Mclachlan: Mary walks: (Speaks to me on such a basic level. Always has)

Damian ryce – blowers daughter ( touches me deeply)

There are at least another few thousand. And i am sure that tomorrow this list will be different from what it is right now.

Do beeps and boops count as rhythm?
Are clangs and snips hard to fathom?
For this is the music of my alien life,
Helping me keep time to daily strife.

I count in numbers of thirty-two,
Not six, four, three or the simple two.
When a count of a fifth exponent comes,
A new morphing sound is add'd to the sums.

Sums and subtractions, additive and subtractive;
Balloons and contractions, subtle and manipulative;
Symphony of cacophony, reduction of euphony;
Euphony of the aphony, Cacophony of the monotony.

Whittle, whittle, whittle, the mind tends t'be brittle;
Fort'fied by th' rhythms of the body that are subtle.
Quipped plonks and fibbles, quavering solos treble;
Wobbl'ng wide woofs tremble th' floors breaking to rubble.

For peace be had in the riot, storms in the quiet;
Perils sated by the seeming eternity 'n piet-
y
Of the repeated chorus of drums.

Five songs for five different me:

:( me:
Eels - Not Ready Yet
There's a world outside
and I know cause I've heard talk
In my sweetest dream
I would go out for a walk

 me:
Morcheeba - The Sea
Left my soul there,
down by the sea.
Lost control there,
living free.

:nana: me:
Chemical Brothers - The Private Psychedelic Reel

 me:
K's Choice - Live For Real
And I don't want to live forever
but as long as I do I'd love to live for real
With you I might get there, with you I might start to feel
With you I will get there, with you I will live for real

:catroar: me:
Sneaker Pimps - Think Harder
You ask me how to cure your headache: Use a gun
If you think you're doing something special, it's been done
