Can different parts of a story be in different genres?

So, I wrote a story and put it in "erotic horror." I continued it in two more parts, but I decided that they weren't really that scary, so I submitted them as "sci-fi and fantasy." I could swear I've seen this done before (for a story in which one and only one chapter fit in the "incest" category), but for my story, all three parts were put under "erotic horror." Can this be changed?

Sure

The last story I posted (Emily & Ellen's Bet) had 17 chapters that were submitted/posted one a day for 17 days. I submitted 5 of the chapters in the non-consent/reluctance category, 8 chapters in exhibitionist/voyeur, 1 in lesbian sex, and 3 in bdsm.

To my mind it's one of the advantages of submitting a long story in chapters: that you can better define what the story is dealing with in any given chapter.

My stories tend to be very long, and it would be hard to decide (if they were submitted all as one gigantic submission/post) how to characterize the story as a whole, since various parts of my stories explore different areas of eroticism/sexuality.

I'm pretty sure different sections of a story series can be posted in different categories. In fact, now I come to think of it, I've done just that, with no problems. However, the final decision on category seems to lie with the literotica editors. I once submitted a story to Loving Wives, but the editor shifted it to Letters and Transcripts - a graveyard category where the story got much less attention than it would have in LW. I suppose I could have challenged the decision with a pm, or - perhaps - resubmitted the story as an 'edit' in the category of my choice to see what happened - but I didn't. To be honest, I suspect you're bound by the editor's judgement here, but a pm to Laurel might be worth a try if you still feel aggrieved about their decision.

It can be done, but whether it is a reasonable thing to do is questionable.

Incest trumps almost any other category. Putting a story/chapter into Incest when that part doesn't have any incest could annoy the readers. Putting a story that does have incest into a different category could also annoy readers. For some, incest is a must-read. For others it is a Yeuck!

I think that readers tend to have favourite categories, so a story that crosses categories is likely to lose readers with each change. One way round it is to put the extended story into Novels and Novellas, but that category doesn't have many readers compared with other categories.

I keep things in one category, but then mine don't usually wander. The farthest mine might go is into non-erotic, as in a chapter with no sex. I'd advise going with the one theme overall, or into something non-specific like novellas. Although if the chapters are quasi-autonomous, i.e., if they can almost stand alone, it might be better to put them in different categories.

Ok, for what it's worth. I would put each chapter in the appropriate catagory. You might even be starting out with non-erotic or loving wives. If it becomes incest, group or interracial the site managers will probably put them in that category. I've had it done. Also if you have celebrities it has to go in that catagory.

Just put them in the most appropriate catagory and if the readers like the story they will more than likely follow it.
Best of luck

Unless you're writing to the cat specifically, I see no problem with different chapters in different cats. If the story captures the readers interest, they're going to be more inclined to follow the plot line than wonder what cat it's in.

I once submitted a Lesbian Sex story and management put it in the Erotic Couplings cat. It did quite well there. Go figure.

I think what he is asking or telling us is he submitted them to the sci-fi category but in their infinite wisdom, the powers that be, switched the category on him.

So his question is how to fix that or can it be fixed?

Short answer: Yes. But you can't do it.

Long answer: Yes. But you will have to PM Laurel and ask her to switch them. You might have to explain why you feel they don't belong in the horror category though. Someone, upstairs, obviously read them and thought they fit better in horror than sci-fi. Laurel and her minions do take a profound interest in most stories posted here.

If I read a random story (like one the story spinner popped out) and I get really into the plot, I will "favorite" the author and then read all the submissions in order, regardless of the catagory they are in.
