Calm Minds Are Essential At Times Like These

To hell with writing the speeches, she should run for office.

Thank you Lavender, for your words and wisdom. And thank you Laurel and Manu, for making it a sticky thread.

Very good words, I mean it.

but...

it is hard to swallow when you hear of them celebrating on the West Bank. True, it is not the entire ethnic group but how would you be treated there if the same happened to them.

The first thing that people did after Oklahoma was to blame "Arabs" for the tragedy. In fact, it was one of our own people who hurt us so badly. Lashing out at the wrong people will only make this worse and make the real guilty party even stronger.

I'm so sorry that this happened, and my love goes out to all of you.

- Laurel

It has nothing to do with ethnicity........

it has more to do with misplaced ideals, fanatacism, misguided religious beliefs.

Good words, Lavy!

I suppose I don't have any more to add than what has already been said here today.

Of course, I agree that this is HORRIFIC. It is sickening and shocking. It is also scary and frightening to realize that our long held belief of national security has been breached in such a huge and dramatic fashion.

It gives us all pause-to finally realize or at least partially understand what people who live in war zones live with on a daily basis.

The realities of war or terrorism strike fear into all of our hearts. But it has really always been true---no matter what precautions you take or measures you follow to ensure your safety, if someone is determined to...then they can and will compromise and attack your security.

In any natural disaster or military strike or terrorist attack, information and innuendo are almost interchangeable in the beginning. Rumors and facts are intertwined. We have to recognize this and remember that it will be a long time before we understand the who where why and how of this tragedy. Statistics will certainly change on an hourly basis for some time.

I agree that while emotions run high and anger, frustration and fear lead our minds instead of reason, calm and clear thinking, it is important to remember that things will be sorted out. Intelligence, military, government and media sources will all gather information and we will know the truth.

But, as with any topic on this board, I would hope that everyone will heed this advice and remember to stop and THINK before you speak. Hold on to your rhetoric and words of anger at each other. Haven't we all enough to deal with regarding this carnage without getting into arguments on this forum?

Over reacting is such a human trait. I am not surprised to see it here. I just wish that it were a little less predictable.

While this has certainly changed the way we see, think and feel about things, it is also an opportunity to come together as well.

The fact is..the U.S. Government knows and has known which countries harbor these groups. They followed conservative actions after the Marine Barracks bombing. Look at your TV screen to see the results of Conservative action. If the death toll is under ten thousand, we will be the luckiest nation on earth. Terrorism is the worst form of disease, why wait for the next Terrosist Group to kill 10,000 more. All the rhetoric of we will be just like them is pure bullshit, We do not set out with the intentions of destroying thousands of innocent lives, that is the goal of the terrorist. Do not be stupid enough to think this is the end of terrorist action against the U.S.A it is just the beginning and on our own soil.

Registered jerk, that's not conservative action and shame shame SHAME on you for taking such a tragedy to promote your political ideologies. There is not one single political ideology in this country that is responsible for what happened to day. There is not one single politicial ideology in this country that could have prevented it, conservative, liberal, libertarian, militia. Reagan tried that with Libya, but you'll notice that there are still terrorists and Libya still harbors them. We tried it with Afghanistan.

We can't unilaterally hunt down terrorists and destroy them. They live in countries that call them patriots and citizens. You want to go to war for a handful of idiots? A war that cannot be won and our allies won't sanction? We cannot invade the borders of sovereign nations to hunt down and kill people who, while known terrorists outside of those borders, aren't inside. That is an act of war, not an act of terrorism. And quite frankly, enough of our people suffered in the desert of a terrorist.

Bush was highly intelligent and didn't do what I feared. Congrees, civilians, and news media have been calling this an "act of war" since it happened. Bush called it a "cowardly act." What that means is that we won't be going out and starting a war with people who may or may not have had anything to do with this. The Palestinians may be celebrating in the streets, but not a single one of them had anything to do with this beyond political ideology.

We've experienced an act of terrorism. It is not an act of war, the people who did it are not able to carry on a war, they have no land, no armies, no sovereignty. They claim they are at war and they have armies and God's right. They have nothing that will actually back them up in a war.

There is nothing worse on the face of this planet than a war, bar none. War today is not only a muderous event, it's got no front lines. Like lavy said, we have to be calm. We HAVE to use language that does nothing to make these people legitimate in our eyes. They are vermin, they are not people who can carry out a war. We must do everything to prevent a war.

Some extremely reasonable and wise thoughts from Lavender and Killermuffin. May everyone involved in this mess be so reasonable and wise.

What a fucking idiot you are, you think we are not at war with Terroists. Look at your TV screen Killer Idiot, then go spout your rhetoric in front of what used to be the Twin Towers. Only an idiot would spout political ideas at this time, you think the families of the dead give a fuck about Democrats or Republicans. My ideologies are to kill them all let their god sort them out.

Whoa. It's ok to be angry. It's ok to be scared. It's ok to be full of pain, right now. But, what good is flaming going to do? Nothing is going to bring back those people. Take a deep breath. I don't think anyone here is picking a fight.

Registered, you ARE acting out of line. I'm with lavender and KM on this. It sounds like you are the one promoting political ideologies. I have people in NYC that I'm worried about, as do countless of my fellow americans, and fellow human beings. That is not an excuse for hate mongering. We don't have enough information for a rational, considered response. The issue right now is how to help the people that need it most. Take a step back, a deep breath, and stop attacking the very people that share this country with you.

War is not a word to be used lightly at a time like this.

The Persian Gulf Conflict was not a War.
Whatever fighting we do with terrorists is not a War.

I am NOT talking about letting them go and not punishing them. I am talking about a full scale, actual War. War is armed conlfict between nations or states. Is that what you want? Who do you want to go to war with? Syria? Iraq? Libya? Afghanistan? Iran?

By no means let these people get away with it. Hunt them down and annihilate them. But do not start a war before we even know who did it. You're talking about war and you won't even fight it. You are not in the military, you are not locked down on a military base ready for instant deployment. My friends and neighbors are. My friends and neighbors will be the ones who spill blood when we go to War.

These people are terrorists. By giving them a war, you're giving them legitimacy and you are recognizing them as people who we need to war with. There is a huge difference between the war on terrorism and the war on a specific terrorist.

You're far too angry right now, and angry people make bad decisions.

Maintain your cool, guy's!

There are bound to be differences of opinion in regard to actions that should be taken. The fact remains that thousands of innocent people were slaughtered in a horrible, cowardly attack.

When the final decisions are made as to placing the responsibility for this disgusting acts, appropriate, swift and devestating action must be taken against the perpertrators.

This was not just a crime against the United States it is a crime against all of civilized humanity.

As lavy said, right now, the best thing to do is stay calm. Donate blood, we are seriously going to need it. The waiting is the hardest part, it always be the most difficult.

We're trying to understand why these people would do such a thing, and that's something that's beyond our comprehension. The US wasn't the only one that was rocked, so was the rest of the world. We're heavily armed and we have one of the largest forces in the world, yet terrorists still dared. What's to stop them from going after smaller nations they disagree with?

We all want to do something and we're all deeply angry. What's happened in New York is unimaginable to those who haven't been there. The rage we feel is nothing compared to that of those people sitting in LAX for flights that will never arrive.

There is nothing wrong with being angry, being scared, being shocked, or wanting the terrorists who did this to pay for it. Thank whatever diety/nondiety there is that Bush did not use the word War. I wish the media and our other government officials would quit using it.

The worst feeling right now is that we all feel helpless and useless. We want to do something, but we can't. And that compounds our anger.

We will punish these people. It looks to me that Bush will be doing it the right way. Calmly and rationally with a thought to the fact that the we do not take innocent people as collateral damage without great justification.

Tony, I know what you mean, but part of being the better person is realizing that 'but they started it' is a childish excuse to sink to anyone's level. The anger and horror are natural. God knows I'm feeling plenty of both. But we are, ourselves, not terrorists. We are not their supporters. We're members of a nation founded on the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and we need to remember that during this tough time.

If we think about 'but what if the roles were reversed' as an excuse to start rounding up anyone with a Middle Eastern look about them just because if the tables were turned etc. etc. we've become no better than those who have done this terrible thing.

Focus on justice and hope. Focus on healing and helping during a time when a lot of lives are turmoil. Chances are if you don't already know of someone (or are someone) affected by this tragedy, you will before the day is over. Have a kind word for them. Be a good neighbor. That's what America needs right now, not mindless hatred, no matter how justified it may feel.

Remember, mindless hatred is what caused this in the first place.

It's a bitter pill to swallow. For what it's worth, you're not alone.

For those using this event to push your political agendas: give it a rest. Have some respect, vultures.
