Stern is never better when he has someone like William Shatner or David Ducovny on -- he should book them daily and leave off the dopey porn stars.
Anyway, every time he has Shatner on he brings up the old "Star Trek cast hates you" thing. Apparently they all think he's held them back over the years and upstaged them blah-blah. You know what? Sulu, Uhura and Chekov were lucky to be in the first movie. They were minor background characters placed in front of the camera for continuity. The biggest mistake the movie series made was to keep bringing them back and pretend that they were some great "team" of incredible Star Fleet Officers. They were background, and occasionally got some good lines, but the show was Kirk, Spock and McCoy, and the movies would have been better without the slavish attention to fan wishes. It's like the chic who played the fat Asian nurse on M*A*S*H complaining that Alan Alda has been "holding her back". Shatner never held them back; I think he honestly pegged them as the extras they are, and didn't give them another thought, and certainly didn't consider it his job to improve their careers.
And even though STNG elevated the background characters to players I think the movies would be just fine without Troi or Geordi sticking like crazy glue to the franchise. The best moments in the Trek films have to do with new characters and well written moments with the stars, and the worst moments are those created to keep the fans happy, and usually involve things like Sulu flying a helicopter or Uhura dancing naked on a sand dune. Put them all on a super secret dangerous mission to the Neutral Zone, have them die saving the universe in the first three minutes of the movie, and be done with them already.
Unless, of course, you're one of those people who just needs to see Beverly Crusher act, then I can't help you.
Alright, that's it. I have to go wash the geek off so I can get through the rest of my day with some dignity.
Live Long and Whatever.
