Pents, cups, swords and wands. Very pagan, yes, but such symbols were also absorbed by Christianity (Christian knights with swords, holy grail cups, Pents are often just coins or disks instead of pentacles, and wands can be spears--which pierced the side of Christ--or staffs for walking).

What I'm saying is that the probably pagan origins of Tarot have gotten well and truely mingled along the way with a lot of Medieval symbols that are either non-denominational or Biblical. There are, for example, angel figures in a few of the majors and, in some decks, a "Pope" as well as a very Christian devil and Judgement Day.

At a guess, you probably have a Rider-Waite deck or a Rider clone. They're the most common, and the most frequently used by people who want to learn.

yes, i had thought that some of the imagery was very Christian, or at least adopted (avoids using 'bastardised') by Christianity. I had a pope in my deck i think, there was indeed a judgement day as well. Like i said, i have no religious or spiritual inclination at this precise time, how important do you think it is to have such an interest in order to learn Tarot?

Tell you what, I'll give both of you reading tomorrow night, lol. If you want to pull up the original thread it was called "Drunken Tarot" and it went on for several weeks, every Tuesday night.

And since I'm going to have a couple of weeks off pretty soon here, I may do some readings during my winter break.

Hmm... say about 4p.m. my time, which I believe is ten yours? If nothing else you can pick it up the next day- I do them in the thread, so it's not like they vanish on you, lol.

A spiritual or religious inclination isn't at all necesssary. It's not spirituality that makes a good reader, it's knowledge of symbols, a feel for people and situations, empathy, good instincts. Things like that matter far more than any religious inclination.

Uhm- you have my phone number, and talking is faster than typing- why didn't you just call and ask for one?

*giggles, thinking that would put her right up there with Ms. Cleo*

Cool, shall make sure i check it out, you gonna revive the old thread?

Thanks 3113- its probably more important that i let myself grow and be more aware of myself before considering becoming learned in Tarot.

An update

I wanted to let you all know what happened with the Yule gift.

As much as I apprecaited all the suggestions here, I went with another book instead. One that I've been putting off creating for a few years now. A family cookbook. All the foods that we eat as a family or cook especially for one member or another. I inserted comments about the origins of the recipes and who likes this dish or that in particular. Some of the recipes come from people who are dead now, and others from peple who are from other places in our lives. I gave a copy to my daughter for Yule and my son Christmas. They both seemed to like the gift.

I had lunch with my daughter on the Friday after Yule and told her what I had planned. She told me that I didn't need to do anything special to prove that I support her choices and beliefs. She said she knows that it is so because she knows that I love her. Apparently I'm doing better than I thought.

She did say that she would enjoy new candle recipes and knitting patterns...her new passion is fiber, she is learning to spin her own yarn with which to knit. She never leaves home without her yarn and needles.

Thank you all, again for your suggestions. There will be many opportunities for me to put together a book of shadows or a journal for her, and do it without rushing the job.

Sorry for running on...just wanted you to know.

That is exactly what I sit with, this morning. We're so hard on ourselves, arn't we? When most of the time, we're just trying to do the best we can.

You gave her a wonderful gift! Thank you for sharing with us :rose:
