Call In Sick To Work, You Gotta Slay A Dragon

It could have been a scene from any Fairy Tale in a children's book except that the picturesque houses were burning and the quaint villiagers were running around screaming and calling for help.

Help that was not to be had for the last great hero of Pellath had gone to face the Evil That Had No Name and had lost. His broken body lay in the dungeon with the others and his spirit was trapped in a bottle to live eternity in agony.

It had taken years but the Evil One had won. He had conquered much of the land and, with no one to stop him, he would easily take the rest. He wasnt really trying now. He knew he could take it at his leasure and so his dark army was now taking their time...ransacking, raping and pillaging a village and carting off the survivors as slaves. They would take months now where it would have only taken days for them to move on. Indeed, after they left there would be nothing left to recover from the land. It would be a blackened, lifeless, barren wasteland. And then they would move on to the next.

Quaillan sighed and moved away from the crystal that was showing him the scene just described. As he moved from it, the crystal grew murky and dimmed, shutting out the aweful sights and sounds of suffering.

Going over to his high backed chair, he sat and placed his chin in his hand and pondered what he was to do. He was the last GrandMage. All of the others who could have opposed the Evil One were now dead or insane. Any mages left were simply apprentices without older and wiser men to show them the way. If this kept up his would would be plunged into an age of darkness that it would never recover from.

He had to do something and, what he was contemplating was a risky venture. If his world held no more heroes than he must magically send for them. It would take alot of energy and it would signal to the Evil One where he was. He would be pressed for time but he thought he could pull it off. He had to pull it off.

Standing, he made his way to the basement of his hideaway and approached a tarp covered object. Pulling the tarp away revealed a well filled with a murky substance. As he looked into it, his reflection warped and separated into many facets...like a kelidescope. The facets represented the many dimensions in the universe and his magic was going to have to search these dimensions in order to find those capable of fighting this great Evil. It was from one of these dimensions that those heroes were going to be pulled.

Around the well were items needed to cast his spell. He had been preparing this spell for many days now and all it needed was the last touch.

Pulling a spell book from his robes, he opened it and found the pae that he was seeking. With a deep breath, he begin the chanting...his voice building in strength and sound as he spoke. The first faint sylables now fading as the next echoed off the chamber walls.

And the water stirred and begin to swirl....a white light appearing in the middle of it and then shattering and zooming off into each facet....still the mage chanted and still his voice echoed around him...and somewhere....an evil stirred and took notice...and a chuckle issued from the darkness. For now he knew where his last enemy was hidden.

And somewhere in the present time and dimension, people were going about their daily life. Some noticed the flash of light that lit the sky and some did not. Some wondered what it could be and some did not care. But eight people were goign to find out what that flash of light was and their lives were never going to be the same again.

Somewhere in the world an actress stepped from her trailor, a smile on her lips for the public that surrounded the barricades of the movie set. And a young voice was heard from the crowd. "Miss Hyun! Can I have your autograph?! You are my hero!" And at that moment a bright light surrounded the actress and she had disappeared.

Somewhere in the world a Soccer Player is talking to a newspaper reporter who comments. "You know, Miss Schmidt, alot of the young people that have seen you play think you are an example of what women today can do. You are a hero to many of them." And before the astonished eyes of the reporter, a bright light envelopes the athlete and she is gone.

Somewhere in the world, a doctor has just saved a young man's life after hours in a touch and go situation. Emerging from the room, he talks to the parents and girlfriend of that young man and is pleased to tell them that it looked like he was going to be okay. Overcome with emotion, the mother throws herself into the doctor's arms sobbing and says,"Oh, thank you. I dont know about anyone else but you are a hero to me." And that same mother backs away with a strangled cry as the doctor is enveloped in a white light and disappears before the astonished trio.

Somewhere in the world, a firefighter is standing in front of a newscamera, his face smokey black and his body slumped from exahustion. The family that he had just saved from the burning building being taken to the ambulance. The family's saftey won by his quick thinking and willingness to risk his own life for theirs even when others had said the rescue was impossible. The TV News reporter talks into the microphone. "That was a tremendous rescue! You know that, to those people, you are a hero." And then the cameraman almost drops the camera as a white light envelopes the firefighter and he disappears.

Somewhere in the world, an activist sits in a police station talking to her lawyer. Her actions to save yet another endangered species landing her in jail. The lawyer sighs and says,"Jadiza, I understand that to many you are a hero in this matter but...." He never finishes his sentence for right then a white light envelopes her and she disappears before his very eyes.

Somewhere in the world, a computer technician retrieves a vital piece of information and is rewarded with a slap on the back and a,"Your a goddam hero, you know that?" from a friend. Seconds afterwards, a bright light envelops him and he dissappears.

Somewhere in the world, a rookie cop is being congratulated for a drug bust and a medal pinned on him as he stands before his superiors. "Well, kid, how does it feel to be a hero?" One of them says only to see him enveloped in a white light and disappear.

Somewhere in the world, a teacher is sitting in a classroom way past the time she should have gone home, patiently explaining a concept to one of her students. Suddenly the student brightens as the concept hits home and she smiles at her teacher. "Oh, yes! Now I get it! You know I just might be able to pass this course after all. Miss Winslow, I think you are my hero!" And suddenly the teacher is enveloped in a white light and disappears.

Later on the tabloids would report some of the mysterious disappearances. The newspapers and TV news would have brief stories on them but no one could explain exactly what happened. It was simply a puzzle that could not be worked out. Some would talk and blame UFOs and some would say the government did it...whatever theory they subscribed too, in the in no one knew for certain.

And somewhere in another dimension, these eight people appeared again one by one in a large room with a long table and an old man sitting at the head of it. There were eight chairs around the table and each was seated in one of them.

As the last one appeared, the old man spoke.

"I guess you are all wondering why you have been called here," He said.

Firefighter

He looks around the roomw ith a look of confusion on his face. A sweat drop falls off his forehead, and he thinks, "I ain't in Kansas anymore."

Cop

*shock*

"What the hell just happened?"

*tries to get out of chair... feels an overwhelming compulsion to stay seated*

"What the he...? What's going on here? Someone explain this!"

Wiz (Walter Ignatius Zumwault)

The lanky, unkempt man in a tshirt and jeans looked around the room, and chuckled softly to himself. "Man... this VR rocks! Hardly see ANY pixelation! Hey, Bob? How did you get the smells in? It really smells like some dank cave! Way cool."

Dr. Elijah Gottlieb

There was a bright flash that completely blinded Dr. Gottlieb as he was about to ask Mrs. Huang if she'd like to see her son. The flash was immediately followed by a twisting sensation in his gut. Just as his sight was about to return, Elijah felt a sudden jerk, as though he was on a subway that had screeched to a halt. And now he was falling backwards. His sight had just about returned enough for him to make out a swiftly tilting ceiling before the chair he was sitting in slammed into the ground.

Dr. Gottlieb tried to determine what surprised him more: the fact that he was on the floor staring at a stone ceiling or the fact that he was in a chair.

The room smelled musky and damp, and the lighting was markedly inferior to what he was used to. There were huge stone arches above him rather than flourescent lights and flimsy panelling. Even with the few voices he could hear, it was way too quiet.

All this was assimilated in an instant and did little but serve to further disorient Dr. Gottlieb.

He rolled off the chair and lifted it upright, taking notice of the long table and the stunned look on the people's faces. Everyone except the old man in a robe seemed to be as suprised as he was.

Without understanding why, he sat down in the chair.

"I guess you are all wondering why you have been called here," the old man said, closing his book.

Elijah spoke as soon as the police officer had finished his retort. "Yes, why's are nice and all, but I'm far more interested in the who's, where's, and most importantly, the how."

Soccer Star: Margarita Schmidt

Margarita had taken a lot of tumbles in the game of soccer, and ridden a hundred times as many challenges. That was why the arrival in the cave didn't fling her to the ground. She looked around her, wondering just what the hell had happened. What happened to the press, the fans... the whole damn stadium come to that. Her mind went through a tabloid list of possibilities: kidnap by aliens, the government, or little winged fairies. Only the latter sounded likely to dump her, and their other victims she thought, noticing the other people around her, in a cave. She didn't believe in fairies. That only left a nervous breakdown. She wasn't having a nervous breakdown. She knew it. She didn't do that kind of thing. That left her baffled. The others around her seemed as shocked as she was - some were even starting to panic. Then a robed figure spoke.

"I guess you are all wondering why you have been called here."

"No shit!" she replied.

OOC: Just waiting for the rest to do an initial post and then I will combine my char's arrival and thoughts with the announcement from the wizard.

Jadiza

She looked around this room now, a soft bite on her lower lip. She was greatful for the giant save from another prision stay, but for once in her entire life, our lil miss Jadiza was at a loss for words. She only stood with a confused look in here eyes.

OOC: if Jadiza is wearing her soccar unifrom go with this first part, if not ignore it ^_^

IC: Checking the ppl around him, he was glad to know they atleast spoke english form he heared so far. Looking around and seeing a young girl, and the look on her face, he thought, 'I know how you feel.'

Stepping forward, and dropping the equipment he had left, he was goign to say sumthing, then scratched his head. Then slowly looking up at the old man(remembering to always respect his eldars.. hehe), "Would you happen to know where we are sir? I;ms ure you can tell from the look on our faces, we need some answers - and the sooner the better!"

Wiz

Wiz looked around some more, walked over to the old man, and pulled his beard. Paling, he stuttered, "Uh...uh... J-Jerry? You're freaking me out here! How the fuck did you get tactile sensation?!! Ohmanohshitohmanohfuck!!! Where the hell am I?!?!"

Jadiza

She looked around ad the others around her, then to the bearded man.

"Would someone please explain to me what is going on here. If you had anything to do with this, sir" She was refering to the bearded man, "then I am grateful. you just saved me from another night in jail, but would you mind talking?"

OOC: Sorry, all. My postings have been haphazard at best due to my RL. I will try to do better.

IC: Janice swallowed once and then twice but her mouth still seemed to be dry. She looked around the room and still couldnt believe what she was seeing.

She was an avid reader and fantasy books topped the list. Everything her reminded her of what was in those pages. But that couldnt be. She could not be in her classroom helping a student one minute and then sitting in some medevil themed room with strangers the next. It wasnt possible...was it?

Then a voice caught her attention and she looked to see an old man sitting at the head of the table.

"Well, thats an understatement, she said in answer to his question.

************************

The wizard looked at the motley crew gathered before him and shook his head. Either he was reading these people wrong or the spell had a lot of bugs to work out of it. One of the men came over and tugged on his beard. A lot.

Clearing his throat, he said,"You have been brought here because we find ourselves with a shortage of heroes in this world. Seeing as how it was either get some heroes or be enslaved, I decided to perform a very special spell to search out heroes and bring them here so that the Evil That Has No Name can be conquered once and for all."

"Since that spell cannot be worked more than one time and since you cannot go back to your own homes before this quest is accomplished, you are stuck here and will either be enslaved with the rest of us, killed or succeed beyond all hope to vanquish this evil."

"Questions?"

Jeff the Cop

"So all we have to do is learn how to survive. Hunt down the greatest evil that's ever lived. Slay it with, umm, whatever we get ahold of. Then we get to go home? Hey, no prob.", Jeff said casually, "I mean hell, I knew that flashnacks were a possibility, but I only dropped one tab back at the U."

Looking around himself bemusedly he wonderd how in the hell his brain came up with all these people.

Dr. Elijah Gottlieb

OOC: Hm...I posted, but it didn't seem to go through. Let's try that again.

IC:
The old man spoke, but explained nothing. Dr. Gottlieb was worrying. He wasn't sure if it was his sanity that worried him or the state of the universe. Either case would be difficult to live with. But he still wanted an explanation.

"Questions? What about the who, where, and how I just asked a few seconds ago?" Elijah moved to stand up, but something seemed to compel him not to. "Who are you to do this to us?" He strained against himself to stand up, but failed again. This too worried him. "Where is it that you have brought us?" With a grunt and gasp, the doctor was able to wrench himself from whatever compulsion held him to his seat. He was surprised at the volume of his utterance, but a sense of pride and indignance filled him. "And most importantly, I'd like to know just how it is that you've done..." Some of that pride dropped off, but the indignance stayed put. "...whatever it is that you've done!"

Jadiza, protector of all that is small and fuzzy!

She raised her hand, looking much like she was in school all over again.

"I have a question.... What in the name of lactos free milk is the Evil That Has No Name?!?"

Needless to say, she huffed for a moment or two, before spying the man more closely....

"Did you harm any little animals in the making of that falsely long beard?"

Wiz

Wiz let the words of the man sink in a bit before answering. Sure, he'd seen tons of books in which this kind of crap occurred, but there was one tiny detail missing here...

"Uh, your Beardship? Are you nuts? Unless your Evil is one mother of a virus, or maybe Microsoft, I'm not gonna be a whole lotta use here." Wiz looked around the room, "In fact, I'm seeing a real shortage of the usual testosterone junkies in armour that go along with spells and shit... Just what the fuck do you think we are supposed to do here?"

Jeff

'Oh shit...', Jeff thought to himself, 'this isn't an acid flashback is it? Am I crazy? I don't think so... it's too organized for that. Do I have to accept this at face value? It doesn't look like I have a choice at the moment. Fuck.'

Looking around the room he surveyed the others with him. The firefighter was easy, he was still sweaty and sooty from his job, and the big yellow-orange safety coat was a giveaway, too. Who were all these other people and why had they been chosen?

"I have only one question before we start this, Mr. Wizard, and think hard before you answer.", he looked directly at the wizard, "If your house is on fire and you can only remove one thing... what do you take out of your house?"

Silently, he waited for his answwr.

OOC: Sorry guys for dropping this. RL got kinda rough for a bit.

IC: Quaillan sighed and looked around the table at the people gathered there. He was doomed. The strange languages these people used and their lack of armor and weapons was not promising.

"Okay, you want the long version," He said, rising and beginning to pace.

"We would like a version that explains something a little clearer than what you have just said, yes," Said Janice, a upset about the whole ordeal but mostly upset that she was somewhere she did not choose to be with people she did not know doing something she was not sure of.

"Very well," He said as he stopped his pacing and came back to the table," If you will all be seated again...."

Waiting for them all to sit, Quaillan begin again.

"First of all, to answer the ridiculous question that was answered before. If I was trapped in a burning house I would simply cause a rain to douse the house and get rid of the flames. But, for one of the commoners I suppose the answer would be to take youself from the house."

"As for the rest of the story, we must begin several years ago when a dark wizard came into power in the deserted lands to the west. He known only as darkness for he would not tell anyone his name. The reason that he did not became apparent as he grew in power and begin to take over that land through assassinations and other misdeeds. He did not tell anyone his name because, with that name, we, the council of wizards, could have used it against him to stop him. As it was any records having to do with him were destroyed at his own hands and it is rumored he even had his own parents put to death."

"Thus he has become known as The Evil With No Name. Over the years this evil has sought to take over the world completely and has cut down every hero that we have had go up against him. He then begin to eliminate the council one by one until I was the only one left and forced to hide from his madness."

"However, my own safety has cost the lives of countless men, women and children. All of them too terrified to take up arms against him and take back the land. Therefore, I took it upon myself to cast a powerful spell that reached through time and dimension to search out heroes and bring them here. The spell found each of you and now you are stuck in this world until either the evil destroys or enslaves you like it is doing to the people or you destroy it."

"If the evil gets to you first, you are probably going to be dead in a matter of a short period of time and your misery will be over quickly or he could make you linger and put you to work in a mine or other hell hole and drag your time out here indefinately."

"If you best him, you get to go back to your home, the people get to go on with their life and we all go home happy."
