The bill still faces a tough fight to become law.

By the end of next week, it must return to the Assembly, where it failed by a handful of votes earlier this year. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger seems unlikely to sign it if it does pass the Assembly. He has said it is up to the courts or the people to decide whether to overturn Proposition 22, a 2000 ballot initiative which defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

The Senate vote is a victory, but maybe I will hold off on the champagne, for the time being.

I was really excited when I first heard about this but now that I remember that Arnold is the governor, my excitement has gone quite down. Arnold is very anti-gay and has no respect for California's gay citizens IMO.

Edit: I take back what I said. I read in article that Arnold is actually FOR same-sex marriage.

Well, I still don't trust him. I certainly didn't vote for "The Terminator!" We'll just have to wait and see where this goes.

I mean, California once had the reputation of being a sort of the unofficial leader in progressive thinking and liberalism in the country. No longer. Senator Dianne Feinstein would have been a great governor, but she's a Senator.

Now I'm just waiting for the religious groups to come in with their hypocritical onslaught.

Schwarznegger is now saying he will veto the bill. He says that the courts should determine the matter.

You can't win with Republicans. If the courts make a decision they don't like, they whine that it should be left to the legislature. When the legislature passes a bill they don't like, they say it is a matter for the courts.

This was SOUNDLY defeated in a referendum by the people, That in and of itself is reason for Gov. Arnold to veto the measure.

Much Has Happened in Five Years

Five Years ago ...

Arnold was a bad actor

We were at peace

I was legally another gender.

A lot can change in five years!

Then put it up for another vote.
