The Graf Fredrick Bauer’s family had come to power when the Roman legions had been driven back from the Rhine and the Danube by the wild Huns and Magyars of the steps swept in to plunder the crumbling Empire. His ancestors had carved out a holding in the Carpathian Mountains and by right of conquest and a strong sword arm they had maintained that holding. They had driven the Tatars, and Turks from their lands. The Hapsburg’s had granted them tiles, and had given them an unusual amount of autonomy to rule and they did with an iron hand. Now Vienna’s eyes had turned west preoccupied with the Corsicana upstart.
The Graf Fredrick Bauer had an eye for beauty and a dark appetite for innocent young maidens. He sat in the throne room of his castle’s keep that dominated the valley. His powerful frame resting casually in the ornate chair, the symbol of his family’s power. His cold blue –gray eyes surveying the Burgers that had assembled. They where eyes that missed nothing. His steal gray hair was tied back with a black silk ribbon as was the custom .
“Gentlemen the taxes this year have doubled as the Emperor needs fun to fight the French, and each village shall supply a company of infantry for the army.”
Bauer knew that this would be an intolerable burden, but if a father was willing to part with his daughter and her innocence then there was an exemption. He waited to see who would sacrifice his innocent young daughter. And have her delivered to the Keep.
