I was hanging out in the yard all day painting my canoe and was just watching all the insects. I have a huge butterfly bush and was amazaed how many butterflies came in a couple of hours...they are such beautiful creatures. But the most amazing things are the dragon flies...besides looking really cool and some are some real funky colors...their flight paths are amazing...puts any man made machine to shame....its was a good day being outside...

When I work in the yard dragonflies land on my shirt. I love the way they jerk their heads around while they look at stuff.

You must be new...your the only one who replies to my thread....they are amazing creatures and eat a hell of a lot of mosquitos..they even market a device now that mimics their sound to keep pests away...

Funny you brought this up

I was watching my garden out my kitchen window this morning and sat transfixed watching a big dragonfly buzzing around. I was sad to see it leave. It's colors were breathtaking.

I love dragon flies. They're so neat to watch. I just love the colors on thier wings, very cool.

When I lived out in AZ my grandparents had a big pool, and this same dragon fly would come every day, I thought it was because he loved me. :D I was a goofy kid, but I loved that little thing.

I knew there was a reason I liked them. Is there a way to attract more? Natural mosquito repellents are always a plus.

I love sitting in my back yard and watching the animals and insects. I have buttflies galore. And, I saw a lunar moth yesterday! My cat chases the poor little dragonflies. :)

I put a pond in my front yard just to watch all the creatures that come...I have koi but frogs have come, turtles, water bugs and i get alot of birds. We have a drought here so i am getting alot of creatures coming...I feel good like I am actually helping the planet in my own little way..

You just reminded me of the time

We had a fountain in the backyard and the kids wanted gold fish in it. We bought a bag full of gold fish and it was so cute to watch. The next morning we woke up to gold fish heads all over the patio. The racoons had made themselves at home during the night and had a nice little feast out of our fountain..... doing our bit for the local wildlife .....

I have had few pond disasters...bought a 70 dollar koi and he jumped out.....had a hereon come and take one...snapping turtle was in there as well...go him out...those damn things are fast. It bit right threw a stick. But now they have had babies and I got about a hundred or so little koi as well. the dogs keep the racoons and deer way...

Our dog tried to eat the baby's bunny rabbit one time. Dog. Bunny. Crying child. Screaming kids. I'm SOOOOO relieved to not have any animals left. We only have one tank full of guppies that refuse to die (in the baby's bedroom -- she starts high school next week).

Do not ask me about the time(s) I've had copperheads in my kitchen.

Dragonflies and Butterflys are so much calmer to observe... and they require so little care & attention. I did not know dragonflies eat mosquitoes. I live very near a creek and mosquitoes are a huge problem. I love my Purple Martins who come home every spring like clockwork to eat their weight in the horrible insects!

Martins and swifts are so cool as well...I love watching birds fly as well. I have a yellow finch that comes to my house regularly, I saw a baltimore oriole this year, first one in five years, and have a pair of blue jays. In the spring I have turkey buzzards which are ugly but huge...like the birds at Capistano...they come just about exactly on the first day of spring every year. They nest in the woods behind my house.
