Bush to relax protected species rules

Saying "what else can he break?" with George Bush is the equivalent of asking for disaster.

Don't say famous last words.

Oh baloney. The enforcement of this law is purely political and all politicized, completely in the direction of misusing and abusing the goal of species protection to stop any and all development. Everyone's known it for a long time, so why do you pretend that there's any validity to this biased, sensationalized, pandering, demagogic report? This proposed rule change is about restoring at least a scintilla of balance and reasonableness to the law.

Rox, you have always been incisive in your political commentary, but sometimes you really sadden me.

Environmental and endangered species decisons in the hands of vote-obsessed politicians, most of whom wouldn't know an endangered species if it stepped in front of them, but are very aware of the financial benefits of passing development applications???

Do me a favour.

It's a death warrant to many species and areas of special scientific interest, and you know it.

As a race we are hell bent of taking everything we can from this planet, for instant financial gain, and giving nothing back.

The material greed of the human race apalls me.

How is the report invalid?

And doing so at the last minute.....while nobody is looking.....

This wilderness development thing..... Now my Brit friends here may wish to comment further on this, but one of the things that impressed me the most about living and working in Britain was just how difficult it was to develop farm and wilderness area for commerical or industrial usage. This had the effect of forcing developers to re-use exisitng and abandoned industrial areas...

That struck me pretty much as a win-win thing.... maintained the vast green areas which had survived the 19th century... re-cycled abanndoned factories and the like..... kept urban centers alive....

Cool huh? But not particularly relevant to THIS sneaky little "rule change'.. I supose... this is really about HOW policy is made.

Funny priorities on things in this adminsitration.... Unlike the Russians, the little forrest beasties don't shoot back, I suppose.

Pretty amazing actually. Dubya has four months to go and he's managed to threaten endangered species, women's rights to birth control pills, the right of a person whose been tortured and imprisoned for years to a fair trial, any faith our allies may have that we'll come to their aid...

And still managed to get in a nice long vacation in China and see the Olympics.

He's certainly gotten himself a place in the history books. At this rate I can only hope someone shoots him. I really don't want to know what else he's going to pull in September, October and November (I'm going to assume he'll take December off for Xmas, but who the hell knows?).

Careful what you ask for... Not only are you subject to arrest.... but you are forgetting the succession rules in our nation...

The way to do this is to arrange for an all expense paid (try Exxon-Mobil) hunting trip for George AND Cheney and then just let shit happen.

Well, it's not like animals ONLY live in the United States. I guess, like our citizenry, if they don't like it or feel safe here, they can leave. Of course, Homeland Security will make sure they don't get back in -- or, if they do, that their cell phones are monitored. Can't have them breeding dissidents, after all.

My first reaction to this thread "Bush to relax protected species rules" was that his advisors had found a loophole for him in the species intelligence requirement rules for eligibility as Homo Sapian Sapian....

But then we would have to open up that whole Great Apes rights thing again... don't want to go there.

No... we are simply back to wiping all those pesky species which are hard to keep up anyway..... There are obviously entirely too many endangered species and we simply must find a way to deal with them.

I can see historians in George W. Bush Presdiential Library "In his eight years in office, George W. Bush was able to lower the number of species on the Endangered list through a clever policy of species eradication....."

He's a disgrace. Globally and at home I'm ashamed of the man we've proclaimed our leader. I guess that's what happens when you elect someone who has the IQ of a gerbil (I know, I'm being kind. Gerbils are smart things really. Much better instincts, common sense...)

Sigh. Okay. Sorry. I'm getting a little bitchy.

I know the feeling... actually today I am back to simple ridicule.. it's a comforting and more pychologically sustainable place to be.. But for the last couple days of bikini watching by our President while a war was breaking out with an "ally".... I kinda lost it.....

In the words of the great Randy Newman classic "Rednecks"

"He may be a fool but he's our fool.
They think they're better than him, they're wrong"

Now I just have to believe it.

Aren't you in Moscow right now? The closer to home it is, the more emotionally charged it can get.

I heard on NPR this morning that things are... getting better? Sorry. I was half asleep when the radio was blaring and trying to get conscious. I'll hear it again on the commute in to work.

When the Democrats start running candidates Red America likes, there wont be any more Dubya's.

The Republicans know that Demicrats are hopeless fools for World Savers and Do-gooders who fret about the Euros liking us. So the Republicans run docile bozos like Bush.

When you get your shit together things will change.

Yes I am... .still here... but bolting for Germany in a couple of days..

Well the Russians have gone from denying that they were in Georgia proper to announcing that they are not going any further into Georgia... make of that what you will.

I think they are convinced that they have substantially eliminated the Georgian Military Machine, such as it is.

Feeding their paranoia is their sense that nobody in the West seems to believe their side of this story.... Gee... I wonder where THAT credibility gap comes from.... Hmmmm.

Hell... I stilll have no idea why the Georgians did what THEY did.... We really do need to grow a better class of an ally..... I am sure the Georgians are thinking exactly the same thing.

It is instructional, I think, to look at the map of the region.... Georgia is not as remote as you might think... Certainly within easy reach of our airbases in Turkey...

Reading between the lines.... I suppose you can draw the conclusion that our total lack of support is because WE believe the Georgians percipitated this whole thing even tho they KNEW the Russians were massed on their border.

But why did we not just SAY that?? Instead of "sternly warning" the Russians who were clearly not impressed.... One would have to say they were encouraged, actually by our reaction, or lack therof.

Sorry for the threadjack.... only tangentially related to the shallowness of the braintrust we have entrusted our nation to.

But you asked....

:D

I guess that's what happens when you elect someone who has the IQ of a gerbil

so what would be the IQ equivalent rodent of John Kerry who you surely voted for and who had a lower GPA in college than W? a hamster?

At least Kerry had been on the sharp end, which is more than you can say for The Shrub.

Let me tell you what's going on here. It started with the polar bears.

By having them classified as "endangered", they managed to implicate CO2 as the endangering factor, due to global warming. Under the Endangered Species Act, this requires the government now act to control emissions of CO2 throughout the USA.

Thus, they come in through the back door, using the Endangered Species Act to get the government to clamp down on the huge, huge problem of CO2 emissions from all sources, something which neither Bush nor congress nor anyone else is ready to deal with.

To counteract this, Bush signed this law, transferring control of endangered species from the Feds to local managers, who don't have the authority to interfere with CO2 emissions.

That's what it's about. I heard all about it on the radio. Environmentalists have been pursuing this legal strategy for like 3-4 years and finally got it to work. It was legal ploy intended to force the US Gov't to face up to the CO2 problem. Now this is the government's response.

The actual impact on endangered species (most of which are plants, by the way -- like 75%)...?

This won't help or hurt the polar bears one way or another. The arctic ice is still melting.

GPA

George Paid (for his) Achievement....

Oh. Bad. Sorry. It just worked so well.

Ask me when I have more time about the relationship between grades earned and overall personal and professional success someday. I have a few studies I've found...

I'm off to work.

Not a bad analogy, Gerbils to hamsters, actually, have no idea of the relatively similar rodents. The Bush/Kerry Yale GPA's were virutally identical... it would seem. Maybe even for the same reason.... Freshman parties.... But then GPA is hardly a measure of IQ and IQ is hardly a measure of intelligence, or rather is not a measure of effective intelligence.

So apologize, Eliana, for characterizing our President as an "idiot" simply because he acts like one on occasion... after occsaion.

Now... back to your regularly scheduled broadcast.

It's more devious than you think.

My first new car was a VW Bug. It was simple and functional and cheap to operate and maintain. Bugs were very popular. GM & FORD tried to compete with Pintos and Vegas but couldnt. So we got emission standards that VW couldnt meet. Adios Bug. Adios competition until the Japs fucked Detroit at their own game.

When I left the military in 1971 I could repair almost any car, and did all of my own car work. By 1981 I couldnt fix anything, because of the electronics. Pollution was the excuse for the gadgets, but the agenda was to get more work for the car dealers.

I guess that we actually reduced pollution was beside the point, huh? Or don't you remember that?

As for your knowing how to fix buggy whips.... well shit happens... It's called technology....

You are welcome to go back to points and distributors and carburators if you like..... I bet they sell like hot cakes!!! Never mind the loss of power, fuel economy and increased emisions...

Silly stuff, JB, really silly stuff.

KEEBLER

Thats how guvmint works. Dubya pulled the exact same stunt with Terrorism and Iraq. But youre not arguing that Saddam really needed to go, are you?

Corporations create 'needs' that appeal to the gomers, then the corporations go to the guvmint with the plans typed up and sacks of money. Congress and Dubya get their money, the bills become law, and you shell out money for the miracle cures.

Lets use abortions as an example. No one figured that abortions would reduce crime in America, and we spent gozillions on new cops and cars and jails, etc. But it turns out that most of the women who get abortions are the same women who spawn little sociopaths, and from 1973 to the early 1990s 37 million kids were aborted. A large chunk of the sociopath community vaporized.

Oh! Did you know that every execution prevents 7 murders?
