WASHINGTON, DC--Mere days from assuming the presidency and closing the door on eight years of Bill Clinton, president-elect George W. Bush assured the nation in a televised address Tuesday that "our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is finally over."

"My fellow Americans," Bush said, "at long last, we have reached the end of the dark period in American history that will come to be known as the Clinton Era, eight long years characterized by unprecedented economic expansion, a sharp decrease in crime, and sustained peace overseas. The time has come to put all of that behind us."

Bush swore to do "everything in [his] power" to undo the damage wrought by Clinton's two terms in office, including selling off the national parks to developers, going into massive debt to develop expensive and impractical weapons technologies, and passing sweeping budget cuts that drive the mentally ill out of hospitals and onto the street.

During the 40-minute speech, Bush also promised to bring an end to the severe war drought that plagued the nation under Clinton, assuring citizens that the U.S. will engage in at least one Gulf War-level armed conflict in the next four years.

"You better believe we're going to mix it up with somebody at some point during my administration," said Bush, who plans a 250 percent boost in military spending. "Unlike my predecessor, I am fully committed to putting soldiers in battle situations. Otherwise, what is the point of even having a military?"

On the economic side, Bush vowed to bring back economic stagnation by implementing substantial tax cuts, which would lead to a recession, which would necessitate a tax hike, which would lead to a drop in consumer spending, which would lead to layoffs, which would deepen the recession even further.

Wall Street responded strongly to the Bush speech, with the Dow Jones industrial fluctuating wildly before closing at an 18-month low. The NASDAQ composite index, rattled by a gloomy outlook for tech stocks in 2001, also fell sharply, losing 4.4 percent of its total value between 3 p.m. and the closing bell.

Asked for comment about the cooling technology sector, Bush said: "That's hardly my area of expertise."

Turning to the subject of the environment, Bush said he will do whatever it takes to undo the tremendous damage not done by the Clinton Administration to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He assured citizens that he will follow through on his campaign promise to open the 1.5 million acre refuge's coastal plain to oil drilling. As a sign of his commitment to bringing about a change in the environment, he pointed to his choice of Gale Norton for Secretary of the Interior. Norton, Bush noted, has "extensive experience" fighting environmental causes, working as a lobbyist for lead-paint manufacturers and as an attorney for loggers and miners, in addition to suing the EPA to overturn clean-air standards.

Bush had equally high praise for Attorney General nominee John Ashcroft, whom he praised as "a tireless champion in the battle to protect a woman's right to give birth."

"Soon, with John Ashcroft's help, we will move out of the Dark Ages and into a more enlightened time when a woman will be free to think long and hard before trying to fight her way past throngs of protesters blocking her entrance to an abortion clinic," Bush said. "We as a nation can look forward to lots and lots of babies."

Continued Bush: "John Ashcroft will be invaluable in healing the terrible wedge President Clinton drove between church and state."

The speech was met with overwhelming approval from Republican leaders.

"Finally, the horrific misrule of the Democrats has been brought to a close," House Majority Leader Dennis Hastert (R-IL) told reporters. "Under Bush, we can all look forward to military aggression, deregulation of dangerous, greedy industries, and the defunding of vital domestic social-service programs upon which millions depend. Mercifully, we can now say goodbye to the awful nightmare that was Clinton's America."

"For years, I tirelessly preached the message that Clinton must be stopped," conservative talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh said. "And yet, in 1996, the American public failed to heed my urgent warnings, re-electing Clinton despite the fact that the nation was prosperous and at peace under his regime. But now, thank God, that's all done with. Once again, we will enjoy mounting debt, jingoism, nuclear paranoia, mass deficit, and a massive military build-up."

An overwhelming 49.9 percent of Americans responded enthusiastically to the Bush speech.

"After eight years of relatively sane fiscal policy under the Democrats, we have reached a point where, just a few weeks ago, President Clinton said that the national debt could be paid off by as early as 2012," Rahway, NJ, machinist and father of three Bud Crandall said. "That's not the kind of world I want my children to grow up in."

"You have no idea what it's like to be black and enfranchised," said Marlon Hastings, one of thousands of Miami-Dade County residents whose votes were not counted in the 2000 presidential election. "George W. Bush understands the pain of enfranchisement, and ever since Election Day, he has fought tirelessly to make sure it never happens to my people again."

Bush concluded his speech on a note of healing and redemption.

"We as a people must stand united, banding together to tear this nation in two," Bush said. "Much work lies ahead of us: The gap between the rich and the poor may be wide, be there's much more widening left to do. We must squander our nation's hard-won budget surplus on tax breaks for the wealthiest 15 percent. And, on the foreign front, we must find an enemy and defeat it."

"The insanity is over," Bush said. "After a long, dark night of peace and stability, the sun is finally rising again over America. We look forward to a bright new dawn not seen since the glory days of my dad."

Bill, does Hillary know what you're up to? Shouldn't your time be spent with your lawyers? Time to bone up on important redefinitions like, "is," "sex," "lie," and imprtant new phrases like "no legal controlling authority," and "I never had sex with THAT woman."

Although I just knew that you were out there patrolling the net for sex. Carefull! You can still be caught!

A listener reminded me of this … and I thought we would just pass on the favor. It’s an on-line poll conducted in 1999 by The New York Post. They wanted their internet visitors to vote on the most evil person of the second millennium. Here are the results after about 20,000 votes cast. The first number is the number of votes cast, the second number is the percentage of votes cast. There’s something rather unusual about the results. Take a look, and I’ll share the little twist with you.

Yeah, sure enough. Bill Clinton is second. Hillary is sixth. I don’t actually believe that Bill is evil. Just a sociopath. Hillary? Well, the label fits. Oh, and the odd twist? Both Hillary and Bill were write-ins. The Post didn’t include them in the original poll.

I just hope the 48% decline in the Nasdaq since March is over.

That's okay, don't address the issues. Have no fear, Republicans, the Clinton prosperity is over! Now that your boy is in office, we'll see real change, guaranteed.

Doesnt anyone ever notice that under a Democratic President....

:p

March was when Bush became a serious cadidate for President, after slandering McCain and using his connections to destroy a true American, John McCain. The economy hates George W. Bush. When he beat McCain in the primaries was when the markets began to crash. Every time he gained in the polls, the markets took a dive. The day he was appointed by the Supreme Court the markets crashed hard and they fell for three days straight after that. Bush is going to fuck America hard and fast for the next 4 years or until he is impeached, whichever comes first. Anyone who voted for Bush (and let us not forget that there were far more people who voted for Gore) will be making excuses for him and blaming everyone but themselves for a long time to come. You blew it, Republicans: BIG TIME.

Okay, one mis-step in many good steps...

:p

So what does it mean...

That mindless dottoheads can enter a lame poll. And you actually take it seriously.

I'll give Bush a chance....more than the dittoheads can say.

Andra...all those issues brought up and still all you can focus on is the blowjob? Getting a blowjob isn't against the law..and so what if he lied about it...he should have ignored the question. That is all that Starr could come up with after spending millions to investigate Whitewater...another example of Republican efficiency...

Ahh the Reagan Era...or should we just call it the "Second Coming"? I remember those years well. Trickle down? Yep it trickled right into the rich pockets and no farther..while I was working two menial jobs(and during one month it was three) just to make ends meet. Good jobs provided by the rich with their tax cuts? Guess I missed out.Don't tell me it was a grand time...I lived through it and I know better...

Meanwhile Ollie North is running around the White House breaking Federal law selling weapons to a national "enemy" Iran.

Did Reagan know about this?
If he did...he was an accesory and guilty of a crime...worse than lying about a blowjob I'm sure.

Or worse, was he unaware this was going on?
That's all we needed, a President so out of it he didn't know what was going on in the White House.

Had an argument with my best friend the other night. He's a Rush man. He keeps saying that the 64% of people that approve of the job Clinton has done are "misinformed". When I asked him to enlighten me as to what I was "misinformed" on. He, as usual, and as all those like him do evaded the question. FYI I get my information from many different sources. Print(several newspapers and magazines), TV, radio(NPR), books etc. He gets his from talk radio...nuff said.

Rather arrogant and condescending on his part I think.

Let's see what Bush does..if anything...

There is a positive correlation between the number of Mosquitos and baseball games but it doesn't mean the two are related. To relate John McCain to the falling stock market is the height of sheer folly, but thanks for a good laugh.

Ah my sweet Thumpie...as ususal you are right on the ;money'

:p

Actually...

Maybe the Republicans need to try getting a blowjob once in a while! Might loosen up their reactionary tendencies a bit.

As a matter of fact my freind's girlfriend doesn't do that particular thing...maybe that is his problem!

I wonder if Bush II will finish the job daddy Bush I started......

:p

What a bumch of bullshit. Especially from Ambrosius. give me some hard facts. Not this crap you usually put out. Where are your quotes from? Come on asshole back up your big mouth

hey cant people have differenting political opinions

:p

what does WTG mean?

:p

I don't have a lot of nice things to say about Gore (anyone else remember The PMRC?) but.... Bush? If there is one quality that I want in ANY President it's that he/she is at least semi-literate.

Way to go? Thought Id keep it short and sweet. I wasnt in a debaty mood :)

we are fucked.

Before I begin my tirade I'd just like to say that I don't believe in the bipartisan political system (ie. I'm registered as an independent - I am neither democrat nor republican).

I really have to wonder WHO ACTUALLY BELIEVES that Bush's anti-abortion, christian fundamentalist cabinet members (the ones who are suddenly oozing out of the woodwork they have hidden in since the days they served in Ronnie and Big George's White House) really have the interest of the middle and lower classes at heart?? (Just kidding...what hearts?).

Of course there is a silver lining to every cloud. How exciting to be able to watch evolution in reverse...and while the neandrethals who are going to be running our country fuck up a good thing, we all get to have a front row seat at the dissembly of any progress we have made in the arena of civil rights.

Women can be officially accorded the title of "second class citizen" when he makes abortion illegal and we ONCE AGAIN have to resort to back-alley butchers. Let's just hope that his four years are up before someone gives him the 'idea' to make women give back the vote on top of all the other insults to our intellect.

Gee, wonder whatever happened to that "compassionate conservative" stance GW used throughout the election...seems to me like he is more conservative than his mommy and daddy ever were....

There are soooooooo many more examples I could give concerning the downfall of any prosperity and peace we have acquired, but since my stomach is churning and my blood pressure is rising I'll leave it at that. We've got 4 years to watch this sitcom unfold...hopefully we can all live through it.

I'm sooooooo tired of this.

I really dislike joining in these kinds of threads, and generally avoid them whenever possible, but....

I've given "your" guy a chance, lived through 8 years of him, which was a major chunk of my adult life. I've watched as "good" has become labeled "bad", and what was once "unacceptable" is now the standard to which we all must rise.

I would have given Gore a chance, too, however much it would have chaffed.

If "my" guy screws up, I'll vote him out along with the rest of you, but for now, c'mon y'all, give him a chance.

okay, now back to your regularly scheduled fussin' and fightin'.

Cheyenne, I've been waiting for your response to this thread.. that's all?!

As one of the few Republicans on this board, you have a responsibility. I think I'm a bit disappointed.
