Hey Fellow Writers,

I’m new to the group – so, hello! My name is Iris. Live and work as a freelance writer in California. Major Burroughs fan

As a way of introducing myself, I thought I would launch into talking about a favorite book of mine, Naked Lunch.

A question -- did you all know this year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of NAKED LUNCH?

I found out that a personal favorite – the independent publishing house RE/Search Publications – is offering a Burroughs Valu-Pak, which includes a rare hardback and a 1978 magazine featuring Burroughs.

Since it’s the anniversary, I thought I would spread the word – this is something I bought for my cousin and he loved it …rare interviews, literary excerpts, amazing photos, an article by Burroughs on the cut-up method of Brion Gysin, etc. …a treat for hardcore fans and newbies alike.

I’m curious to know – how did you all first discover Naked Lunch? And have you found any other books that capture the spirit of Burroughs/Naked Lunch

I've never read Naked Lunch all the way through, sad to say. But I've always liked Burroughs, both Edgar Rice and William.

Welcome to the AH. You'll find a diverse and spirited group here. ;)

I first thought he meant Edgar Rice. I forgot all about William. Not surprising, I've never read of his work. But happy fiftieth, Lunch.

ggpd tjread!

good thread!

burroughs is a kind of grandaddy to us all. the 'beat' is a bit before me, but he's been going since then.

i remember reading naked lunch, in university; powerful. crazy.

In response:
My father was reading it so when I got home from school, I promptly fished it from it from beneath his boxers and read it until dinner time when I returned the purloined paperback to its' lair.....I revisit the book every few years as entertainment. William S. had a voice and a perspective that was provocative and insightful......I remain a fan and a devotee of his work.....
One of the great loves of my life was a junkie and his narratives helped me to appreciate and interpret her ramblings.......she OD'd a couple of years ago and I still rely on WSB to provide a measure of understanding......he went to places that I could never go with her......

A welcome  for the little newbie from the good little witch.
