So how do these fights work? Is it essentially just people beating each other into submission with foam swords?

if you get hit with a sword on a limb, you "loose" that limb. if you loose an arm, you tuck it behind your back. if you loose a leg, you go down on one knee. loosing two limbs = death. getting hit on the torso = death. headshots are not allowed because they hurt.
