Bugs...Would you eat one?

nope

I have done the worm in tequila but other than that I am not into bugs either.
It is one thing to be in a position where you had to eat them to survive but I am not about to go looking for the critters to eat for the fun of it. lol

Yeah, I've eaten the worm in Tequila too *more like swallowed*

But, other than that......Just say NO to bugs!!! Yuck!:D
And bugs covered in Chocolate doesn't change my mind either.

Eat bugs?

Only if there's a bunny attached.

Bug Eating

We have a caterpillar here, called a Mopani Worm, which, when deep-fried is delicious. Takes a bit of courage to try the first one though!!!

Not unless I was very hungry and didn't know where my next meal was coming from. I have been so thirsty in the woods that I drank from a mudpuddle and ate food that was dropped on the ground, but that is about as far as I have gone. I could imagine getting hungry enough after a few days without food to eat just about anything that was edible, including bugs, but by choice - no, not if I had other food.

Blech!!! Yuck!!! Spit it out!!!

I came close to swallowing the worm from a bottle of mesqual once....couldn't do it....just couldn't.

Food is supposed to be enjoyable.......if someone has to dare me to eat something....forget it!!

*shudder*

I haven't found the link yet but apparently there is a website for wormwatching...and it has a whole recipes page on how to best cook an earthworm...

*shivers*

To survive, yes.

If it was the only source of chocolate, I imagine I'd take up ant eating.

i've had escargo and chocolate covered ants. it's not a big deal to me. i wouldn't much on a grasshopper for a snack but i'm usually willing to try most kinds of foods, even when they're wacky.

Escargot is a delicacy. I envy you Californians, because you can trap snails & eat them fresh!

Insect ingestion

it's pretty good. it just tastes like a chewy mushroom drown in butter and garlic

I had ants once... some speciality from my friend from Venezuela. Ants in choco crumble.... wasnt all too bad. I rinsed my mouth with a litre of "Fluorigard" for 30min (1tbl spoon/day to be rinsed with for 1 min -- always read the label) :D

I am pretty sure that people who make candy out of bugs are in it for the novelty, but in this case of novelty, I feel this would indicate a serious mental health deficientcy due to the excessive intake of artificial color or somthing. ;)

(you people do realize that the the FDA has no clue what effect colors have on us, and what our bodies do with them, don't you? :( )

So anyway, The answer to your question, for my personal situation is "yes", of course, if I needed to. I have a vast knowledge of the worlds spices and their sources and so I would only have to eat unseasoned bugs if the environment didn't pose access to any seasoning, and in that case, I wouldn't chew and savor them much. Since I am totally survival trained and equiped, I would also be able to cook what I have to eat. I wouldn't eat a living bug. I'd have to kill them first.

Excellent and easy to find in the ground... most anywhere...
Grubs of beetles.

*smack*

Yep, eaten a few. Mostly ants. Stay away from those damn little red fire ants like they have in Texas though...they taste BAD! But the big reddish-black ants here in the Black Hills have kind of a neat citrus taste to them.

Barely got up the nerve to try scorpion. Wouldn't do that again, ugh...the crazy things you do in survival training, hehe :)

Had grasshoppers...long time ago, don't remember what they taste like exactly, kinda bland if I remember. Those had to be raw because we couldn't build a fire, but I hear they're not bad toasted lightly! :D

Mae the Bug Eater

Why, yes, actually. I eat them almost every day.

There are all kind of little bug parts in my bread, wheat, flour........

Hey, it's all meat protein!

gee, thanks for reminding us... :(

I eat the worm form the Tequila bottle, becasue no one else will. besides it's an international law I think. ;)

I've also eaten Choco covered bees, grasshoppers, and ants. Not that I'm proud of it, but I was a kid, and it was presented to me as candy, NOT as a joke. Nothing wrong with it, much like eating chicken gizzards, without knowing what part the are first.

Here is eating bugs...

I remember hearing him say something about this on the Tonight Show a while back and it seemed so fitting for this thread:

Jerry Mathers (Leave It to Beaver) said he suffered rectal bleeding, abdominal pain and big-time diarrhea after swallowing a live South American worm during a Survivor spoof on The Tonight Show last February. The former Beav, 52, told the April 24 edition of the National Enquirer that he lost 15 pounds during the weeks-long health ordeal, but bears no ill will toward Tonight, or host Jay Leno. He doesn't even think he got the worst end of the Survivor parody. Said Mathers: "I felt sorry for Charlene Tilton because she had to eat a boiled fish eye." (POSTED: 4/30/01)

I think the moral of this story is to chew the bug before you swallow.

Bugs as food

I have been mostly done with my cereal when I noticed it was full of bugs... and, as hungry and tired as I was, I just ate it anyway. It does not happen very often, but those are the bugs I have eaten.

Most crustaceans are related to bugs, so next time you're eating shrimp, lobster, crab or whatever, don't think too much. :)

Rexfelis got to it before me but Lobsters, shrimp etc. are basically sea cocroaches and the like and we consider them to be a delicacy (almost).

I've eaten all sorts of bugs, snakes, brains etc. out of interest some has been good and some absolutely revolting but you shouldn't write something off until you've tried it;)

Oh and whoever mentioned locusts/grasshoppers they're delicious deep fried:)
