You're placing the responsibility on the wrong side.
It shouldn't be laypeople the ones who need to read research papers and do the critical analysis thingy. It should be the experts.

It doesn't matter what motivated Faucci (masks shortage or misleading, faulty research at the time) in emphatically advising Americans against wearing masks.

The bottom line is that Faucci played a significant part in the genesis of the anti-masks movement.

I just googled Wikipedia and apparently his life achievements are impressible,
but he was more the laboratory research type.

He probably would be great for managing the research /treatments or vaccines developments part.

Doctors, no matter how impressive the credentials, do NOT run the country. They are not dictators for life nor do they agree with one another. If some of those "renowned" doctors had their way we'd be holed up in our homes forever.
